ACTIVE Garbage Disposal Cleaner is an individually wrapped tablet: remove that wrapper before use. That detail matters if you have previously used a dissolvable cleaner pod. Check the actual package and your disposer’s care instructions before starting; instructions for another brand are not interchangeable.
This guide reviews the maker’s directions and safety information. We have not tested cleaning performance, compared foam volumes or confirmed a particular disposer’s approval.
Read the tablet directions, including the wrapper step
ACTIVE’s product instructions (useactive.com) describe this sequence:
- Empty the disposer. Run a full stream of hot water for one minute.
- Reduce the water to a trickle narrower than a pencil and direct the faucet away from the drain.
- With water running, place one unwrapped tablet fully inside the disposer, then run the disposer for about a minute. The maker specifies two tablets for a first cleaning or heavy residue.
- If foam rises into the sink, continue running the disposer and water until it drains. Rinse remaining foam and turn the disposer off.
Follow the power-switch directions and warnings on your package and appliance. Never put your hand in the grinding chamber or reach inside to push a tablet into place. If the permitted method is unclear, stop and ask the disposer maker before using the cleaner.
A disposal cleaner is not a drain-clearing treatment
The maker’s FAQ says the tablets are designed for the waste disposer, not for cleaning drains, and suggests twice-monthly use or use when odors occur. Its broad appliance and septic claims do not replace your own equipment’s restrictions.
Separate the problem you want to solve from the product format. For returning odors, our disposal smell guide covers physical cleaning and other possible sources. For humming, a jam or a unit that will not start, use the disposer troubleshooting guide. Do not treat an unresponsive motor or backed-up sink as a reason to keep adding tablets.
The cleaner’s hot-water cycle also does not change everyday food-grinding practice. InSinkErator’s care guidance (insinkerator.com) calls for cold water while grinding food and gives its own cleaning routine. It requires disconnecting power for physical cleaning and warns against putting a hand inside the disposer.
Read the safety information before opening a tablet
The ACTIVE safety data sheet, revision 1.3 dated January 31, 2026 (useactive.com), identifies skin irritation and serious eye irritation hazards. It says to keep the product away from children, wash after handling, avoid touching the eyes and use protective gloves. Read the package and sheet for the complete handling, exposure and first-aid instructions; a fresh scent does not establish that a cleaner is harmless.
Compare tablets with actual cleaning uses
Check the exact product name, tablet count and label on the package you are considering. A tablet count is not automatically the same as a number of cleaning cycles: the published first-clean or heavy-residue direction uses two tablets. Account for that difference before treating a pack’s supply claim as your own maintenance schedule.
If you are switching from Lemi Shine, our Lemi Shine pod guide explains its separate directions. Keep each product’s package with its own instructions; do not transfer tablet doses or wrapper handling from one cleaner to another.
