The Ideal-Tridon Hy-Gear 67-6 is the clamp I’d keep in the truck. Ideal-Tridon’s 2021 catalog lists the 67-6 with a 316 stainless band, housing and screw, the top grade in its 1/2 in. Hy-Gear line, and it scores 8.0, the top of this page.
It’s also the only pick whose maker publishes an install torque. Ideal-Tridon’s 67-6 page gives 35 lbf-in (4 Nm) for most applications and a minimum destructive torque of 60 lbf-in for stainless screws, 50 for plated carbon screws. That’s the number that keeps you from crushing a hose barb or stripping the band.
Sizing is simple. The 67-6 chart runs from size 6 (3/8 to 7/8 in.) to size 104 (5 to 7 in.), and the listing linked here is size 28, 1-1/4 to 2-1/4 in., which covers most 1-1/2 in. sump and drain hose. Use the finder below for other sizes.
Ideal-Tridon describes the band’s clean punched perforations as holding strong and connecting easily. Perforations are what the screw threads engage, and on soft hose they can press into the cover; that’s the one point it gives up to the NORMA.
One thing to check: the Amazon listing’s part number reads 6728550, while Ideal-Tridon’s catalog numbers the 67-6 size 28 as 6728-6. The listing title and bullets both say Hy-Gear 67-6 with a 316 band and bolt, so confirm “67-6” and 316 on the package when it arrives.
Ideal-Tridon also makes the same 1/2 in. Hy-Gear in other grades, with 301 or 201 stainless bands. They look alike in a parts bin, so the series number on the band or box is what tells you that you have the 316 version.
The catalog also describes how the housing is made: a one-piece, mechanically interlocked housing stamped from a single piece, with no tabs or stakes that can fail under higher tightening torques.

The clamp lives outdoors, in salt air or underground. Breeze’s marine-grade 63000 or the Ideal-Tridon 67-6 is the better choice.
The Breeze Power-Seal is the everyday shop clamp. NORMA Americas’ catalog, which covers the Breeze line, lists Power-Seal as a general purpose automotive and industrial worm-drive clamp built to SAE Standard J1508 Type F, with a 1/2 in. band and diameters from 7/16 to 7 in.
Materials depend on the series number, and the catalog spells it out. The 62000 series has a plated screw; the 64000 linked here has a 410 stainless hex screw with a 300-series stainless band and two-piece housing; the 63000 is all 300-series; and the 66000 is all 316. So the 64000 is stainless throughout, with a harder but less corrosion-resistant screw.
It scores 7.0. It passes the materials, all-stainless, standard, size range and band width checks. It loses the torque points because Breeze’s catalog gives an installation torque for its miniature clamps (10 to 15 in-lbs) but not for Power-Seal, and it has a perforated band.
Breeze’s catalog says the line exceeds all SAE requirements and uses a high-strength four-piece Quadra-Lock construction on its general purpose clamps. Size 12 covers 11/16 to 1-1/4 in., a common range for 3/4 in. hose and small drain lines.
For outdoor or buried work, step up to the marine-grade 63000 series, all 300-series stainless, which Breeze recommends for marine, underground and other high-corrosion uses.
Breeze also lists a Liner version of the same 1/2 in. clamp, built to the same SAE J1508 Type F in plated or 410 stainless. The listing linked here is the standard Power-Seal, and this pack is ten size 12 clamps.
For small tubing, Breeze’s catalog points to its miniature line instead: a 5/16 in. band for small-diameter air and fuel lines that Breeze says creates high sealing pressure with only 10 to 15 in-lbs of installation torque. That’s the only torque figure in the Breeze catalog, and it’s for those miniatures, not Power-Seal.

You need the widest band for a high-pressure joint. The 1/2 in. Hy-Gear and Power-Seal bands are wider.
The NORMA TORRO W4 is the clamp for soft hose. NORMA’s TORRO band is non-perforated: the screw engages pressed-in threads, and NORMA lists a smooth or stamped band underside for optimal hose protection. That’s the one check no other pick passes.
W4 is NORMA’s all-stainless grade. Its TORRO data sheet lists the W4 band, housing and screw in AISI 304 stainless, and it scores 7.0 on my checks, passing materials, all-stainless, standard, size range and smooth band. NORMA cites clamping ranges per DIN 3017 and stamps the material and range on each band so the wrong clamp is easy to spot.
It gives up two things. The band is 9 mm, about 0.35 in., so it misses the 1/2 in. band check, and NORMA’s sheet doesn’t publish an install torque, so it misses those points too.
NORMA describes an asymmetric housing that spreads force evenly and keeps the housing from tilting as it tightens, and lists uses including cooling water lines, fuel lines and sanitary applications. The listing here is 16 to 27 mm, roughly 5/8 to 1-1/16 in., in a pack of ten, made in Germany per the listing.
Sizes are metric. Measure the hose’s outside diameter in millimeters and pick the TORRO range that puts it near the middle, the same rule as the inch sizes.
NORMA’s TORRO sheet lists ranges from 8–12 mm up to 190–210 mm in the 9 mm band, and a 12 mm band from 16–27 mm upward if you want more width. The W4 grade sits between W2/W3 (AISI 430) and W5 (AISI 316) in NORMA’s range.
NORMA also makes a TORRO WF with a constant-tension spring insert, listed in the NORMA Americas catalog with 9 and 12 mm bands, for joints that need that spring. The plain TORRO W4 here is the general purpose version.
Measure the hose’s outside diameter where the clamp will sit. The finder picks the SAE size from the makers’ charts.

SAE size numbers line up across makers, but the ranges don’t match exactly. Breeze’s size 16 starts at 13/16 in. and Ideal-Tridon’s at 11/16, for example, so read the range on the package rather than the number alone.
A clamp works best near the middle of its range. At the small end there’s a long tail of band; at the large end only a few threads engage. If your hose sits right at a limit, go up or down a size.
How a worm gear clamp tightens
A worm gear clamp: the screw in the housing turns and drives the band through it. Perforated bands use punched slots; non-perforated bands use pressed threads with a smooth underside. From Ideal-Tridon, Breeze and NORMA documents. Not to scale.
The screw sits in a housing on the band. Turning it walks the band through the housing like a gear rack, shrinking the loop around the hose. On a perforated band, the screw engages punched slots. On a non-perforated band like NORMA’s TORRO, it engages threads pressed into the band, which leaves the inside smooth.
That difference matters for the hose. NORMA lists the smooth underside for optimal hose protection. Ideal-Tridon’s catalog sells a separate non-perforated line too, in 9 and 12 mm, for the same reason.

Breeze’s marine-grade line is all 300-series stainless, which it recommends for marine, underground and other high-corrosion uses, and its 316 versions go further. NORMA’s TORRO comes in grades W1 (galvanized) through W5 (AISI 316); W4 is 304 throughout.
Ideal-Tridon’s 1/2 in. Hy-Gear family shows how much the grade varies inside one look-alike line. Its 2021 catalog lists the 67-6 in 316 stainless throughout, while other Hy-Gear series use 301 or 201 stainless bands.
For a dry cabinet any of them works; for a sump pit, pool or salt air, the 316 version is the one worth paying for.

Breeze describes its Hi-Torque as the strongest worm-gear clamp it makes, with eight screw threads engaged in the band at once and more than four times the SAE torque requirement for Type F clamps. For household plumbing hose, that’s far more than needed; a 1/2 in. Type F clamp covers drain, discharge and appliance hose.
Constant-tension and spring clamps, the kind that take hose clamp pliers, are a different design from worm gear clamps and aren’t covered here.
How to read a clamp’s part number
1
Ideal-Tridon, 12-digit
Series (5 digits) + size (4 digits) + pack code (3 digits). The catalog’s example: 67004-0006-051 is a size 06 Hy-Gear 67-4 in a 10-pack.
2
Ideal-Tridon, 7-digit
Series and size together, then a 2-digit pack code. The catalog’s example: 6706-1-51 is a size 06 Hy-Gear 67-1 in a 10-pack.
3
Breeze
Series prefix + SAE size: 64012 is the 64000 series (410 stainless screw) in size 12, and 63010 is the all-300-series marine clamp in size 10.
4
NORMA
The article number encodes the band and grade; the clamp band itself is stamped with material and range.
Part numbers are worth checking because grades look identical. The difference between a 201 and a 316 stainless clamp is invisible until one rusts. When an online listing’s number and title disagree, as with the Ideal-Tridon listing above, go by the markings on the clamp.
How to measure for a hose clamp
1
Push the hose onto the fitting
Measure where the clamp will sit, over the fitting, because the hose stretches there.
2
Measure the outside diameter
Use calipers, or wrap a strip of paper around the hose, mark it, and divide the length by 3.14.
3
Pick the size
Choose the range that puts your number near the middle. The finder above does it for inch or millimeter sizes.
4
Buy one size up for thick-wall hose
If your number sits at the top of a range, the next size up leaves more band to tighten.
How to put on a hose clamp
1
Size it
Pick a clamp whose range puts the hose outside diameter near the middle.
2
Position it
Slide the clamp over the hose before pushing the hose onto the fitting, and sit it just behind the barb or bead, fully over the fitting.
3
Turn the housing to reach
Put the screw where a nut driver can reach it later.
4
Tighten to torque
Ideal-Tridon gives 35 lbf-in for its 67-6 in most applications. A nut driver or torque screwdriver beats a power drill.
5
Check it
The band should sit flat and square. Run water and look for seepage before you close up the cabinet.
Overtightening is the common mistake. Ideal-Tridon’s 67-6 page lists a minimum destructive torque of 60 lbf-in for stainless screws and 50 for plated, less than twice the install number. A drill can pass that in a blink.
The Ideal-Tridon and Breeze clamps use a 5/16 in. hex screw, so a 5/16 nut driver handles both. For hose clamp pliers, which are for spring and ear clamps rather than worm gear clamps, see the hose clamp pliers guide.

Good fits
Rubber and vinyl hose over barbed or beaded fittings, drain and discharge hoses, low-pressure water and air lines.
Wrong tool
PEX connections (use crimp or cinch rings), pressurized supply lines, and repairing a cracked pipe; a pipe repair clamp is a different part.
Yes for most hose jobs: they adjust over a range, reuse well and tighten with a nut driver. Pick stainless parts and the right size, and don’t overtighten.
What is a worm gear hose clamp?
A band clamp tightened by a screw in a housing that drives the band through it, like a gear and rack. It’s also called a worm-drive or jubilee clamp.
What is the main disadvantage of a worm gear clamp?
A perforated band can press into soft hose, and a power tool can overtighten it. A non-perforated band like NORMA’s TORRO, and a torque-limited driver, address both.
How tight should a hose clamp be?
Ideal-Tridon gives 35 lbf-in (4 Nm) for its 67-6 in most applications, with failure starting at 60 lbf-in for stainless screws.
What size hose clamp do I need?
Measure the hose outside diameter over the fitting and pick the size whose range puts it near the middle. Size 12 covers about 11/16 to 1-1/4 inch; size 20 about 13/16 to 1-3/4.
Are stainless steel hose clamps better?
For anything wet or outdoors, yes. Look at the screw as well as the band: Breeze’s 62000 series has a plated screw, its 64000 a 410 stainless screw, and its 63000 is all 300-series stainless.
Which hose clamp is best for a sump pump discharge hose?
An all-stainless clamp sized to the hose outside diameter. The 316 stainless Ideal-Tridon 67-6 or Breeze’s marine-grade 63000 suit wet, buried or outdoor runs.
Do perforated bands damage hoses?
They can press into soft hose. NORMA lists the smooth underside of its non-perforated TORRO band for hose protection, and Ideal-Tridon sells a separate non-perforated line.
Can you use a worm gear clamp on PEX?
Not for PEX connections. PEX fittings use crimp rings or cinch clamps made for the tubing.
