A dead garbage disposal looks like an emergency and is usually a five-minute fix. Before you call anyone, run through this — most of the time it’s a jam or a tripped reset, not a dead motor. One rule first, and it matters: never put your hand down the disposal, and always cut the power before you reach in.

⚠️ Safety first (read this)

Turn the disposal switch off and, to be safe, flip its breaker or unplug it under the sink before doing anything below. The blades don’t need to be spinning to cut you. No hands in the chamber — use tongs or pliers to remove anything.

Diagnose it by the symptom

What it’s doing Most likely cause Fix
Hums but won’t spin Jammed flywheel Free it with the hex wrench (below)
Totally dead, no sound Tripped reset or breaker Press the reset button / check breaker
Runs but won’t drain Clog downstream Clear the drain, not the disposal
Leaking Loose flange or cracked body Tighten connections or replace
Smells bad Food buildup Ice + citrus clean-out

Hums but won’t spin = it’s jammed (most common)

That hum is the motor trying to turn a stuck flywheel — shut it off fast so it doesn’t burn out. With the power off:

  1. Look under the unit for the hex (Allen) socket in the center of the bottom. Insert the little wrench that came with it (or a 1/4″ hex key) and work it back and forth to free the flywheel.
  2. No socket on your model? Put a wooden spoon handle against the blades from the top and lever them around — never your hand.
  3. Once it spins freely, fish out whatever caused it (a bone, pit, or bit of metal), restore power, press reset, and test with cold water running.

Dead silent = power problem

No hum at all usually means it lost power, not that it died:

  1. Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit — it pops out when overloaded. This fixes a huge share of “dead” disposals.
  2. Still nothing? Check the breaker and the switch. If it’s on a wall switch that also feeds an outlet, test that the switch itself works.
  3. Power is confirmed and it’s still dead? The motor’s likely done — time to replace.

Runs fine but the sink won’t drain

If the motor spins normally but water backs up, the disposal isn’t your problem — there’s a clog downstream in the trap or drain line. Don’t keep running the disposal against standing water. Clear it with the steps in how to unclog a drain (and skip the chemical drain cleaner — it can damage the disposal’s seals).

Leaking

Find where: a leak at the top is usually the sink flange (tighten the mounting ring or re-seal with plumber’s putty); a leak at the side hoses is a loose dishwasher or drain connection (tighten the clamp); a leak from the bottom of the body means the internal seals have failed and the unit should be replaced.

When to just replace it

If the reset and breaker check out and it’s still dead, if it leaks from the body, or if it’s old and chronically jams, replacement is the smart move — disposals are inexpensive and a straightforward swap. See the units I’d actually buy in the best garbage disposals, and if yours splashes or is loud, a better splash guard is a cheap upgrade.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my garbage disposal humming but not spinning? The flywheel is jammed. Cut the power, then free it with the hex wrench in the bottom socket (or lever the blades with a wooden spoon handle) and remove whatever caused the jam.

Where is the reset button? On the bottom of the disposal — a small red button that pops out when the motor overloads. Press it back in to reset.

Can I put my hand in the disposal? No. Even off, the blades can cut you. Always shut off power and use tongs or pliers.

Should I repair or replace it? If it’s just jammed or tripped, fix it. If it’s leaking from the body or stays dead after a reset and breaker check, replace it — disposals are cheap and easy to swap.
