Plumbing Picks is reader-supported. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.

Quick answer from a licensed plumber: For a 60-inch alcove, the DreamLine Infinity-Z kit (DL-6116) puts the base, walls and a sliding glass door in one order. Without a door, the DreamLine DL-6189 base and wall kit. For a 48-inch stall, the DreamLine DL-6070C. For a 36-inch corner, the DreamLine Cornerview. None include the drain, valve or shower head, and each of the four kits in the table ships in an 80 by 45-inch box.

Our pick for most alcove showers: the DreamLine Infinity-Z 30 x 60 in. door, base and wall kit (DL-6116). Check the DreamLine DL-6116 on Amazon

A walk-in shower kit is a shower base and the walls around it, sold together, and sometimes the glass door too. It is a way to turn a tub spot or an old tiled stall into a stand-up shower without tiling. The hard part is not picking a pretty one. It is knowing what is in the box, what is not, and whether that box will fit through your house. Every pick here is a DreamLine kit, because DreamLine publishes full specs, shipping sizes and installation manuals for each one; we left out kits whose makers’ documents we could not open. Every spec comes from those documents.

From DreamLine’s product pages, spec sheets and installation manuals linked below. Every linked listing was sold by Amazon.com and in stock on October 6, 2026. All four bases have a 2-3/4-inch threshold and take a 2-inch compression drain that is not included.

What Is in the Box, and What Is Not

Read the kit contents line before you compare anything else. On DreamLine’s pages, the Infinity-Z kit lists a door, base and backwall; the DL-6189 and DL-6070C kits list a base and backwalls; the Cornerview lists an enclosure, base and backwalls. Three things are missing from every kit here:

  • The drain. DreamLine says each base takes a standard 2-inch compression fitted drain, not included. Buy one before install day.
  • The valve and trim. DreamLine’s wall manual says to shut off the water and remove the faucet, handles and trim before the panels go up. Your existing valve stays in the wall; if it needs replacing, do it while the wall is open. Our shower system guide covers valve and trim kits.
  • The shower head. Pick one separately; see our rain shower head picks or handheld shower heads.

Size, Drain Side and Threshold

Measure the opening, then match three things. First, the footprint: DreamLine’s alcove kits here come in 60 x 30 in. and 48 x 32 in., and the Infinity-Z kit also comes in 60 x 32, 34 and 36 in. and 48 x 36 in. Second, the drain side: DreamLine sells the 60 x 30 in. kits with the drain on the left, center or right, and says to see the technical drawing for the exact drain location. Third, the walls: DreamLine says the installation surface must be level and solid and the walls at right angles, and that irregular surfaces or out-of-square walls will cause serious problems.

Plumber’s note: on a tub-to-shower swap, start with where the tub drain is. A 60-inch kit with the drain on the same end may line up with it; if not, the drain has to move, and that means opening the floor. Plan for that before you buy the kit. Our shower pan guide covers bases sold on their own.

Walk-in does not mean curbless

Each of the four DreamLine bases in the table has a 2-3/4-inch threshold. DreamLine calls it a low profile threshold for easy entry and exit, and it is a short step, not a roll-in. If someone in the house needs a zero-threshold shower, these are not that product.

Freight: Plan for an 80-Inch Box

These kits arrive as large freight boxes. DreamLine lists each of the four kits in the table at 80 inches long and 45 inches wide, which is 6 feet 8 inches long (our arithmetic). Box heights run from 13-7/8 inches for the DL-6189 to 22-1/8 inches for the Cornerview. Check that the box can turn the corners in your hallway and stairs before it arrives.

Open and check everything as soon as it comes. DreamLine’s manuals say to examine all boxes for shipping damage and compare the parts list, and to contact DreamLine within 3 business days of delivery. DreamLine says it will not replace damaged products or missing parts free of charge after 3 business days, or once the product has been installed. The manual also warns that tempered glass with chipped corners or slivered edges can break, and not to install damaged glass.

Walls Go Over Backer Board, Not Studs

The base and the walls install differently. DreamLine says the SlimLine base installs direct to the studs, before backer board or cement board, with its tile flange against the studs. The cement board or wallboard then goes above the tile flange. The Qwall backwalls go over that: DreamLine says to install them against a solid surface such as wonderboard or greenboard, not directly to the studs. DreamLine’s QWALL-5 kit pages also say the walls can be glued to existing walls or tile, and its wall manual says some cutting and drilling may be needed.

One detail to plan now: DreamLine says reinforcement is required to install a grab bar on its walls. Add solid blocking between the studs at grab bar height while the wall is open, even if no one needs a bar today.

Best Complete Kit: Base, Walls and Door

DreamLine Infinity-Z 30 x 60 in. Sliding Door, Shower Base and Wall Kit (DL-6116)

60 in. W x 30 in. D x 76-3/4 in. H · SlimLine single-threshold acrylic base, fiberglass reinforced, 2-3/4 in. threshold · QWALL backwalls with 2 glass shelves · semi-frameless sliding door, 1/4 in. tempered glass · walk-in opening 21-3/8 to 25-3/8 in. · left, center or right drain · 2 in. compression drain not included · lifetime limited warranty on door and base, 3 years on hardware finishes, 1 year on walls

This is the kit to buy if you want the whole shower from one maker in one order. DreamLine lists three parts in the box: the Infinity-Z sliding door, a SlimLine single-threshold base and Qwall backwalls. The door is a stationary panel plus a sliding door that DreamLine says reverses for a left or right opening. DreamLine lists 1/4-inch tempered glass, up to 1 inch of out-of-plumb adjustment on each side, and up to 4 inches of width adjustment. The walk-in opening runs 21-3/8 to 25-3/8 inches.

The base is the part to plan around. DreamLine says it installs direct to the studs, before backer board, and its drain opening takes a standard 2-inch compression drain that is not included. The walls go the other way: DreamLine says to install them against a solid surface such as wonderboard or greenboard, not directly to studs. The kit ships in a box DreamLine lists at 80 by 45 by 19-1/8 inches. DreamLine sells this kit in 60 x 30, 32, 34 and 36 in. sizes and a 48 x 36 in. size; the 60 x 30 in. size comes with the drain on the left, center or right.

  • Door, base and walls in one order, per DreamLine
  • Door reverses for a left or right opening
  • Up to 1 in. out-of-plumb adjustment per side, per DreamLine
  • Lifetime limited warranty on the door and base
  • Drain, valve and shower head not included
  • Walls carry a 1-year warranty and hardware finishes 3 years, not lifetime
  • Tallest shipping box of the three alcove kits in the table (19-1/8 in.)
  • Manual says not to lift the door glass alone

Verdict: The pick for a 60-inch alcove when you want the base, walls and glass door to match and arrive together.

Best Kit Without a Door

DreamLine 30 x 60 in. SlimLine Shower Base and QWALL-5 Wall Kit (DL-6189)

60 in. W x 30 in. D x 76-3/4 in. H · SlimLine single-threshold acrylic base, fiberglass reinforced, 2-3/4 in. threshold · QWALL-5 acrylic/ABS backwalls, trim-to-size, 2 glass shelves · left, center or right drain · 2 in. compression drain not included · cUPC certified base · lifetime limited warranty on base, 1 year on walls

This is the same SlimLine base and Qwall wall system without the glass door. It fits a buyer who wants a curtain, already owns a door, or wants to pick the door later. DreamLine sells it with the drain on the left, center or right, so you can match the drain already in the floor. The walls are trim-to-size panels, and DreamLine says they can be glued to existing walls or tile.

DreamLine’s product page says the base requires professional installation, and its installation guide says shower bases must be installed by a licensed plumber. The page also says DreamLine walls need reinforcement before you mount a grab bar. That matters if anyone in the house may need one later, so plan the blocking while the studs are open. DreamLine lists the shipping box at 80 by 45 by 13-7/8 inches.

  • Base and walls only, for a buyer who does not want the door
  • Left, center or right drain to match your floor
  • Walls can go over existing walls or tile, per DreamLine
  • Lifetime limited warranty on the base
  • No door or curtain rod in the box
  • Drain, valve and shower head not included
  • Grab bars need wall reinforcement, per DreamLine

Verdict: The pick for a 60-inch alcove when you want to choose the door or curtain yourself.

Best for a Small Bathroom

DreamLine 32 x 48 in. Center Drain Shower Base and QWALL-5 Wall Kit (DL-6070C)

48 in. W x 32 in. D x 76-3/4 in. H · SlimLine single-threshold acrylic base, fiberglass reinforced, 2-3/4 in. threshold · center drain · QWALL-5 acrylic/ABS backwalls, trim-to-size, 2 glass shelves · 2 in. compression drain not included · cUPC certified base · lifetime limited warranty on base, 1 year on walls

When the space is a 48-inch alcove, not a 60-inch tub spot, this is the DreamLine kit to look at. It is the same SlimLine base and QWALL-5 walls as the 60-inch kit, in a 48 x 32 in. footprint with a center drain. Measure where your drain is before you order; this kit is center drain only.

DreamLine lists the shipping box at 80 by 45 by 16-7/8 inches. That is the same 80 by 45 inches as the 60-inch kits, so a smaller shower does not mean a shorter box to carry in. DreamLine also sells a 34 x 48 in. version of this kit (DL-6071C) for a slightly deeper stall; we did not read a shipping size for that one, so check it on the listing. Like the DL-6189, the DL-6070C has no door, and no kit here includes the drain, valve or shower head.

  • Fits a 48 in. wide alcove
  • Same SlimLine base and Qwall walls as the 60 in. kit
  • Walls can go over existing walls or tile, per DreamLine
  • Lifetime limited warranty on the base
  • Center drain only
  • No door in the box
  • Ships in an 80 in. long box like the larger kits

Verdict: The pick for a small bathroom with a 48-inch stall and a center drain.

Best Corner Kit

DreamLine Cornerview 36 x 36 in. Sliding Enclosure, Shower Base and Wall Kit (DL-6150)

36 in. W x 36 in. D x 76-3/4 in. H · framed corner enclosure: two sliding panels behind two stationary panels · walk-in opening 20-3/4 in. · 5/32 in. (4 mm) tempered glass · full-length magnetic latch · SlimLine double-threshold base · QWALL backwalls · center drain, 2 in. compression drain not included · residential use only, per DreamLine · lifetime limited warranty on enclosure and base, 3 years on hardware finishes, 1 year on walls

For a corner instead of an alcove, the Cornerview puts a two-wall enclosure, a base and two backwalls in one kit. DreamLine says its two sliding panels slide behind two stationary panels to open the corner, and a full-length magnetic latch closes it. The opening is 20-3/4 inches, a little narrower than the Infinity-Z’s 21-3/8-inch minimum. The base is DreamLine’s double-threshold SlimLine.

The trade-offs are in the specs. DreamLine lists 5/32-inch (4 mm) glass, thinner than the Infinity-Z’s 1/4 inch, and up to 1/2 inch of out-of-plumb adjustment per side, half of the Infinity-Z’s. Its spec sheet lists a 71-inch maximum access height, while DreamLine’s product page lists 72 inches as the maximum height available for the door. The spec sheet also says the Cornerview enclosure is for residential use only and not suitable for commercial use. The box is the tallest in the table at 80 by 45 by 22-1/8 inches. DreamLine sells it in chrome, brushed nickel and matte black hardware.

  • Enclosure, base and walls for a 36 x 36 in. corner, per DreamLine
  • Corner opening with a full-length magnetic latch
  • Double-threshold base made for a corner
  • Lifetime limited warranty on the enclosure and base
  • 20-3/4 in. walk-in opening
  • 5/32 in. glass and 1/2 in. out-of-plumb adjustment, both less than the Infinity-Z
  • Tallest shipping box in the table (22-1/8 in.)

Verdict: The pick when your shower goes in a 36-inch corner and you want the base, walls and glass from one maker.

Before You Buy

  1. Measure the opening twice. DreamLine says to verify the model size and measure the opening before installation.
  2. Find the drain. Order the left, center or right drain kit that matches your floor, or plan to move the drain.
  3. Measure the path in. Each kit in the table ships in an 80 by 45-inch box.
  4. Buy the missing parts. A 2-inch compression shower drain, a valve and trim if yours is old, a shower head, and 100% silicone caulk.
  5. Book help. DreamLine’s base guides say bases must be installed by a licensed plumber, and its door manual says not to lift the door glass alone.

Installing a Shower Kit

DreamLine’s manuals put the job in order: plumbing and drain first, then the base, then the walls, then the door. DreamLine recommends setting the base in a bed of sand-mix topping or bedding mortar, not concrete or plaster, and letting the mortar cure before any weight goes on the base. Its second method uses screws and adhesive on a level subfloor. For the screw method, DreamLine lists 1-1/4-inch stainless steel #8 truss head screws through the tile flange into the studs, and warns not to over-tighten them or the base can crack.

When the walls go up, DreamLine says to leave a 1/8-inch gap between the wall panels and the base and fill it with 100% silicone caulk. Allow 24 hours for the sealant to cure before the first shower. For the door, DreamLine says not to lift or move a heavy panel of glass alone; use an assistant or a glass suction cup. Once the drain is in, a shower drain hair catcher keeps it running.

Plumber’s note: water test the drain connection before the walls go on, while you can still see under and around the base. A leak there will not show until it has soaked the subfloor.

FAQ

What comes in a walk-in shower kit?

It depends on the kit, so read the contents line. DreamLine’s DL-6116 includes a base, backwalls and a sliding glass door. Its DL-6189 and DL-6070C kits include a base and backwalls with no door. None of the DreamLine kits here include the drain, the shower valve or the shower head; DreamLine says the base takes a standard 2-inch compression drain sold separately.

Can a shower kit go over drywall?

Not the base. DreamLine says its SlimLine bases install direct to the studs, before backer board, with the tile flange against the studs. The Qwall backwalls are the opposite: DreamLine says to install them against a solid surface such as wonderboard or greenboard, not directly to studs, and that they can be glued to existing walls or tile.

How big is the box a shower kit ships in?

DreamLine lists 80 by 45 inches for each of the four kits in the table above, with box heights from 13-7/8 inches (DL-6189) to 22-1/8 inches (Cornerview). Measure your doorways, hallway turns and stairs before you order, and check every box on delivery: DreamLine says it will not replace damaged or missing parts free of charge after 3 business days, or once the product is installed.

Do I need a plumber to install a shower kit?

For the base, DreamLine says yes. Its DL-6189 and Cornerview installation guides say shower bases must be installed by a licensed plumber, and that all plumbing and drainage should be installed before the shower. The Infinity-Z manual words it differently: use a competent plumber, licensed if local code requires it, for all plumbing. The door manual says the glass door should be installed by a professional, experienced installer familiar with tempered glass.

Is a walk-in shower kit the same as a curbless shower?

No. The four DreamLine bases in the table above have a 2-3/4-inch threshold you step over. DreamLine calls it a low profile threshold, but it is a step, not a zero-threshold, roll-in base. A curbless shower needs a base made for it.

Bottom Line

Buy the DreamLine Infinity-Z kit when you want the base, walls and glass door together, the DL-6189 when you will pick your own door, the DL-6070C for a 48-inch stall, and the Cornerview for a corner. Before you order, match the drain side, measure the path for an 80-inch box, and buy the drain, valve and shower head the kits leave out.
