Quick answer from a licensed plumber: Buy the Delta ProClean 75740 to swap a fixed head for a handheld: Delta lists a 72-inch metal hose and 1.75 gpm at 80 psi. Buy the Delta In2ition 75655 if you want a fixed head and a hand shower with the diverter built in (EPA’s WaterSense search does not list it; see its card). Check the flow basis, backflow rule and warranty terms first.
Our pick for most showers: the Delta ProClean 75740 hand shower. Check the Delta ProClean 75740 on Amazon
A handheld shower head is a hand shower on a hose. The question is how it connects to your shower: as a swap for the fixed head, alongside it, or on a wall bar. This guide compares four handheld and combo models from Delta, Moen and Kohler using each maker’s spec sheet, installation sheet and warranty, plus EPA’s WaterSense product search. It skips the pressure question, which our high-pressure shower head guide covers, and weak flow at the pipe, which is in low water pressure in the shower.
Fixed vs Handheld vs Dual: What Each Setup Needs
A plumber’s description of the four setups:
- Fixed head: one head on the arm, no hose. The simplest setup. You cannot rinse the tub or a pet with it.
- Handheld only: the hand shower hangs on a mount on the arm (Delta 75740, Moen 26100). Water goes to one place. You lose the fixed spray.
- Dual or combo: a fixed head and a hand shower with a diverter (Delta In2ition, Kohler Awaken). One arm, two outlets.
- Slide bar: a wall bar that holds the hand shower at the height you set along the bar. The Delta 51361 covered below mounts on its own wall elbow.
Handheld Shower Heads Compared
| Model | Type | Hose, in | Flow listed, gpm | EPA WaterSense search | Sprays | Backflow, per maker |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delta ProClean 75740 | Hand shower on arm mount | 72 metal | 1.75 at 80 psi | Listed | Dial, 6 incl. pause | Not equipped; vacuum breaker if code requires |
| Moen Engage Magnetix 26100EP | Hand shower + magnetic dock | 60 | 1.75 at 80 psi | Listed | Six sprays | Two check valves (EP) |
| Delta In2ition 75655SN | Fixed head + docked hand shower | 60 metal | 1.75 at 80 psi | Not found in EPA search; sheet lists it | 6 incl. push-button pause | Not equipped; vacuum breaker if code requires |
| Kohler Awaken K-23218-G-CP | Fixed head + hand shower, diverter knob | 60 metal | 1.75 at 45 psi | Listed | 3 sprays each + pause | Code requires in-line device; kit not stated to include one |
Flow is shown exactly as each maker lists it. Kohler’s figure is at 45 psi and the others are at 80 psi, so do not compare them directly. On September 29, 2026 each linked listing was sold by Amazon.com and showed in stock. Availability changes, so check the listing.
Delta ProClean 75740 Hand Shower with Hose
Hand shower with 72 in metal hose · arm mount · 1.75 gpm max at 80 psi · 6 settings incl. pause · 1/2 in NPT · lifetime limited warranty (conditions below)
Delta’s 75740 is a handheld you hang on your shower arm in place of the fixed head. Delta’s sheet lists a 72-inch metal hose on the chrome and satin nickel finishes, the longest of the four picks, and a 1.75 gpm maximum flow at 80 psi. Delta’s product page describes six settings on an easy-turn dial: ProClean, full, full with massage, massage, shampoo rinse and pause.
Note the name. The Amazon title says “shower head with handheld,” but Delta calls this a hand shower, and its installation sheet shows an arm mount, a hose and the hand shower, with no fixed head. Delta’s sheet says the pause setting is a non-positive shut-off, so a trickle keeps running. Delta also says its product is not equipped with backflow prevention and that a vacuum breaker may need to be added if local code requires it.
- 72 in metal hose, the longest of the four picks (Delta sheet)
- Listed as 1.75 gpm max at 80 psi and found in EPA’s WaterSense product search
- Six settings including ProClean and pause, per Delta
- Installs by hand on a standard 1/2 in NPT shower arm, per Delta
- No fixed head: it replaces yours with a hand shower on a mount
- Not equipped with backflow prevention; a vacuum breaker may be required by local code (Delta)
- Delta says tools on the hand-tightened parts “will void the warranty”
- Pause is a trickle, not a full shut-off, per Delta
Verdict: The pick when you want the longest hose and a simple swap on the existing arm, and you are fine using one hand shower for everything.
Moen Engage Magnetix 26100EP Handheld Shower
Magnetic dock and 60 in hose included · 1.75 gpm max at 80 psi (EP models made after 3/1/18) · two check valves · 6 settings · 1/2 in IPS · WaterSense (Moen)
Moen’s 26100 sheet says the set includes the handshower, hose and magnetic dock, with a 60-inch hose and a dock that rotates to change the angle. Moen lists the EP suffix at 1.75 gpm maximum at 80 psi for models made after March 1, 2018; the same sheet lists 2.5 gpm for the non-EP model and 2.0 gpm for older EP units, so the suffix matters. The Amazon listing we link is titled 26100EP. EP models are assembled with two check valves for backflow prevention, per Moen.
Moen’s installation guide is three steps: remove the old head, hand-tighten the bracket and washer to the shower arm, then hand-tighten the hose to the bracket and the handshower. It says to install with a backflow preventer if local code requires one. It also carries a pacemaker notice about its neodymium magnets. Moen’s sheet, Moen’s product page and the Amazon listing give different spray-face sizes, and only the Amazon listing mentions pause (see below).
- Magnetic dock and hose included in the set (Moen sheet)
- Two check valves on EP models for backflow prevention (Moen)
- Listed at 1.75 gpm max at 80 psi and found in EPA’s WaterSense product search
- Three-step, hand-tightened install (Moen guide)
- Buy the EP suffix: the non-EP model is listed at 2.5 gpm
- Contains magnets; Moen’s guide warns pacemaker and implant users to consult their clinician
- Moen’s spec sheet, product page and Amazon listing give three different spray-face sizes
- Pause is not on Moen’s function list, though the Amazon listing mentions it
Verdict: The pick when you want a hand shower that snaps back onto a dock and you would rather have check valves in the box.
Delta In2ition 75655 2-in-1 Shower
Fixed head + magnetic-docked hand shower · 3-way diverter · 60 in metal hose · 1.75 gpm max at 80 psi · pause · 1/2 in NPT
The In2ition is a shower head with a hand shower that docks into it. Delta’s sheet lists a 3-way diverter for single or shared operation of the head and the hand shower, MagnaTite docking, a 60-inch metal hose (Chrome, CZ and SN finishes), and a 1.75 gpm maximum at 80 psi.
Delta’s installation sheet is short: remove the old head and old thread tape, clean the threads, check the gasket, hand-tighten onto the existing arm (arm and flange are sold separately), then click the hand shower in. Delta’s sheet lists EPA WaterSense under “complies with,” and its product page says “WaterSense Labeled,” but we did not find the 75655 in EPA’s product search on September 29 (see below). Colorado bars selling showerheads that are not WaterSense-listed, so Colorado buyers should pick one of the listed models here.
- Fixed head and hand shower in one, with a 3-way diverter (Delta sheet)
- Magnetic docking, per Delta
- 60 in metal hose and 1.75 gpm max at 80 psi, per Delta
- Push-button pause in the handle
- Not found in EPA’s WaterSense search on our check date, although Delta’s sheet and product page list WaterSense; in Colorado, pick a listed model
- Not equipped with backflow prevention; a vacuum breaker may be needed if code requires it (Delta)
- Goes on your existing arm (no arm or flange in the box); tools on hand-tightened parts void the warranty (Delta)
- Pause is a non-positive shut-off (a trickle), per Delta
Verdict: The pick when you want an everyday fixed head and a hand shower for rinsing, with the diverter already built in.
Kohler Awaken K-23218-G 2-in-1 Shower Combo Kit
Showerhead + handshower on a rotating rail · diverter knob · 60 in metal hose · 1.75 gpm max at 45 psi (Kohler) · 3 sprays each · pause · 1/2 in NPT
Kohler’s product page describes a rotating rail that sets where both heads sit, and its K-23218-G sheet lists a showerhead, a handshower and a 60-inch metal hose in the box. Each head has three sprays: wide coverage, intense drenching and targeted. There is a pause feature. The installation sheet has a diverter knob that switches between the showerhead, the handshower or both. Kohler lists 1.75 gpm as the rated maximum flow for each head, and the sheet ties that number to 45 psi, not the 80 psi that Delta and Moen use. The sheet lists EPA WaterSense and California Energy Commission, and EPA’s search lists K-23218-G.
Kohler’s installation sheet has three cautions worth reading before you buy. It says the product contains a magnet, and pacemaker or ICD users should ask their physician. It says plumbing codes require approved backflow prevention devices in-line to handshowers, and it does not say the kit includes one. And it says Kohler low-flow heads are designed for use with compatible Kohler valves, so check compatibility with an existing valve. The 2.5 gpm K-23218-CP is a different model; see the flow section.
- Diverter knob for head, handshower or both (Kohler installation sheet)
- Lists EPA WaterSense and California Energy Commission; K-23218-G is in EPA’s product search
- Three sprays on each head plus a pause feature (Kohler)
- Faucet Lifetime Limited Warranty, with conditions below
- Flow is rated at 45 psi, so it is not a like-for-like number with the 80 psi ratings
- Contains a magnet; pacemaker and ICD users should ask their physician (Kohler)
- Backflow prevention is required in-line by code per Kohler; the sheet does not say the kit includes it
- Kohler says low-flow heads suit compatible Kohler valves; verify before you use one on an older valve
Verdict: The pick when you want a two-head kit with a diverter, and you have checked the valve and the backflow rule for your shower.

Flow Rate: Federal, State and WaterSense
The federal limit for a showerhead is 2.5 gpm measured at 80 psi (10 CFR 430.32(p)), and the flow-restricting insert has to be held in so it takes 8 pounds of force or more to remove it. California’s Title 20 sets 1.8 gpm at 80 psi for showerheads made on or after July 1, 2018, and says a showerhead with multiple nozzles must meet the limit with any or all nozzles in use at once. Colorado law says that since August 7, 2023, a person may not sell a showerhead in Colorado unless it is WaterSense-listed (C.R.S. 6-7.5-105(1)(c), as amended by HB23-1161, which also repealed the older 6-7.5-103). The Appliance Standards Awareness Project says 14 states had stricter standards as of 2024; we could not read its state list.
EPA’s WaterSense label requires 2.0 gpm or less, plus spray force, spray coverage and pressure compensation tests. EPA’s product search page notes that non-certified products are sometimes advertised as WaterSense labeled. We searched it by model number on September 29: the Delta 75740 and 51361, Moen 26100EP and Kohler K-23218-G appear, and the Delta 75655 does not.
Kohler’s own page for the 2.5 gpm K-23218-CP says it cannot ship to California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington and Hawaii. That is a maker’s list, not a legal citation, but it shows why the 1.75 gpm -G version is the one we link. Removing the restrictor is a separate topic, covered in removing a shower head flow restrictor. Delta’s sheets say tampering with it voids the warranty.
Where the Makers’ Pages and Sheets Disagree
- Delta 75740 name: the Amazon title says “Shower Head with Handheld”; Delta’s page and sheet call it a hand shower, and its installation sheet shows no fixed head.
- Delta 75655 WaterSense: Delta’s sheet lists EPA WaterSense under “complies with” and its product page says “WaterSense Labeled”; EPA’s search returned nothing for 75655, 7565 or In2ition, and no 75655 among its Delta entries.
- Moen 26100 spray face: the sheet’s drawing labels 3-3/4 in as the face diameter, the product page says 3.5 in, and the Amazon listing says a 5-1/2 in spray face.
- Moen 26100 pause: the Amazon listing lists pause among its six functions; Moen’s product page lists wide coverage, downpour, relaxing massage, massage, soothing massage and rinse.
- Moen warranty: the spec sheet lists a lifetime limited warranty; Moen’s showerhead warranty page is a lifetime limited warranty; Moen’s separate “Showerheads and Handhelds” page is a one-year limited warranty. Ask Moen which applies to your model.
Hose Length and Slide Bars
Hose lengths are on each maker’s sheet: Delta 75740 at 72 inches, Delta In2ition at 60 inches, Moen 26100 at 60 inches and Kohler K-23218-G at 60 inches. Delta and Kohler list metal hoses on the finishes we link; Moen’s sheet does not say, and the Amazon listing calls its hose metal. Kohler’s install sheet asks you to check the spacing between the lower hose fitting and the finished wall (step 8B).
For a slide bar, Delta’s 51361 product page lists a 24-inch wall bar with an adjustable slide, a 72-inch stainless steel hose, a wall elbow with a brass waterway, dual check valves and 1.75 gpm at 80 psi. The 51361 mounts on a wall elbow, not on the shower arm. Plumber’s note: that elbow needs a water supply behind the wall, or you feed the hose from a shower-arm diverter instead; adding a supply in the wall is a plumber’s job. In a Q&A on that page, Delta says you can divert water between a fixed head and the wand with an in-wall diverter or a shower-arm diverter such as the U4923-PK or U4929-PK. You can check the Delta 51361 slide bar hand shower on Amazon. If a short shower arm puts the head too low, our shower arm extender guide covers that.
Before You Buy
- Check the thread and hand-tighten. Delta and Kohler list a 1/2 inch-14 NPT connection; Moen lists 1/2 inch IPS. Delta’s sheet says to clean the threads and remove old thread seal tape, and warns against tools on the new head. Kohler’s sheet shows thread sealant tape as its first step.
- Look at backflow. Delta says its 75740 and In2ition are not equipped with backflow prevention and a vacuum breaker may be required. Moen says to install with a backflow preventer as local code requires, and lists two check valves on EP models. Kohler says plumbing codes require an approved device in-line.
- Read the pause warning. Delta says plumbing codes require a continuous trickle in pause, and that pressure or valve changes can make the water hot or cold when you return to on. Point the head away first and test with your hand.
- Check the valve for low flow. Kohler cautions that its low-flow heads are designed for compatible Kohler valves and to verify compatibility on an existing system. If your shower turns hot when someone flushes, that points to the valve cartridge; see shower not hot enough and limit stops. If a tub or wall diverter you already have leaks or sticks, see how to fix a shower diverter.
- Magnets. Moen and Kohler both print a pacemaker or ICD notice for their magnetic products. Delta’s In2ition also docks with a magnet; the installation sheet we read prints no such notice, so ask Delta if it matters to you.
- Filters. Filtered heads are a separate choice; see our shower head filter guide.
Warranty Fine Print
All three makers list a lifetime limited warranty (Moen also has a one-year handheld page), and all three attach conditions. The exact words:
| Maker | Who and how long | Conditions, quoted |
|---|---|---|
| Delta | “warranted to the original consumer purchaser … for as long as the original consumer purchaser owns the home in which the faucet was first installed” | “this warranty does not cover Delta products purchased from unauthorized sellers.” Labor is not covered. Proof of purchase is required unless the product is registered. Install sheets: tools on the hand-tightened parts “will void the warranty”; so does removing or tampering with the flow restrictor. |
| Moen (showerhead warranty page) | “for as long as the original consumer purchaser owns that same home” (homeowners). Non-homeowners: 5 years. | “This warranty applies only to products purchased from Moen authorized resellers.” Cleaners with “abrasive cleansers, ammonia, bleach, acids, waxes, alcohol, or solvents” may void it. A separate Moen handhelds page states a one-year warranty. |
| Kohler | “for as long as the original consumer purchaser owns their home” (homeowners). Rented units: 10 years. Commercial: 5 years. | “this warranty applies only to products that were purchased from Kohler Co. or a Kohler Co. authorized seller.” “Improper care and cleaning will void the warranty.” Proof of purchase required; labor not covered. |
If it matters to you, ask the maker whether the seller you buy from is authorized before you order.
Install Notes
Shut off the water, unscrew the old head (use a wrench on the arm side only if you have to), clean the arm threads and remove the old tape, check the gasket in the new part, and hand-tighten. Then run the water and check every joint. A leak or wobble at the wall is a repair, not a head swap; call a plumber.
FAQ
What is the best handheld shower head?
It depends on the setup. For a simple swap on your shower arm, we would start with the Delta ProClean 75740 because Delta lists a 72-inch hose and 1.75 gpm at 80 psi. For a fixed head plus a hand shower with a built-in diverter, the Delta In2ition 75655. For a magnetic dock with check valves, the Moen Engage Magnetix 26100EP.
Do I need a diverter for a handheld shower head?
Only if you want a fixed head and a hand shower on the same arm. The Delta 75740 and Moen 26100 installation sheets show the handheld mounted alone on the arm. The Delta In2ition and Kohler Awaken combo have the diverter built in. For other setups, Delta’s answer on its 51361 product page names shower-arm diverters U4923-PK and U4929-PK, or an in-wall diverter.
What flow rate is allowed for a shower head?
The federal limit is 2.5 gpm at 80 psi. California’s Title 20 sets 1.8 gpm at 80 psi for showerheads made on or after July 1, 2018. EPA’s WaterSense label requires 2.0 gpm or less. Colorado law bars selling a showerhead that is not WaterSense-listed (C.R.S. 6-7.5-105(1)(c), in force since August 7, 2023). The four picks here are listed at 1.75 gpm, though Kohler rates its number at 45 psi and Delta and Moen at 80 psi.
What does the pause setting do?
It cuts the spray so you can lather or shave. On Delta’s sheets pause is a non-positive shut-off, which means a trickle keeps flowing. Delta warns that the temperature can change when you return to on, so point the head away and feel the water first, and do not let children use pause.
Can I use the same shower arm and thread?
Delta lists a standard 1/2 inch-14 NPT connection, Kohler lists 1/2 inch-14 NPT, and Moen lists a 1/2 inch IPS connection. A plumber’s note, not from a maker document: a standard 1/2 inch shower arm takes all three. Clean the threads and remove old tape first.
