Quick answer from a licensed plumber: Moen’s single-handle shower trim kits are not interchangeable between valve families. Identify the valve by its handle and escutcheon screws: screws at 5 and 7 o’clock with a pull/push handle is a Standard valve (sold from 1960 into the early 2000s) or a late-1960s Original Moentrol; screws at 2 and 7 with a pull/push handle is a Moentrol (any Moentrol trim fits); screws at 2 and 7 with a rotate-only handle is a Posi-Temp (any Posi-Temp trim fits); no screws is an M-Core, whose cartridge comes with the trim. Only the Standard valve can be converted, using the 145058 adapter and a 7-inch round Moentrol trim.
Most common case: a Posi-Temp valve (rotate-only handle). Any Posi-Temp trim fits, for example the Moen T2901 Gibson Posi-Temp valve trim (Amazon-sold on September 25, 2026).
Step 1: Identify the Valve Behind the Wall
Moen says it plainly: “Moen has manufactured many types of shower rough-in valves including four types single handle shower valves. The trim kits are not interchangeable.” So the job is to name the valve first. Moen’s own checklist is five questions: “1. Does the escutcheon plate say Moen, Dialcet or Stanadyne? 2. How many handles do you have? 3. What year was the shower valve installed? 4. How do you operate the shower flow/temperature handle(s)? 5. Where are the escutcheon screws located?” The last two answers do most of the work.
Look at the round plate behind the handle. Two Phillips screws at the bottom (5 and 7 o’clock) with a handle you pull out and push in means a Standard valve or an Original Moentrol. Screws at 2 and 7 o’clock with a pull/push handle means a Moentrol; the same screw positions with a handle that only rotates means a Posi-Temp. No screws at all on a single-handle plate means an M-Core (2020 on). Moen’s note for the older plates: “If your escutcheon plate has no visible escutcheon screws, contact Moen.”
| Moen valve (introduced) | Handle operation (Moen) | Escutcheon screws | Trim that fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard valve (1960 to the early 2000s) | “Pull out to turn the water on. Push in to shut the water off. Rotate for hot and cold water.” Not pressure balanced | “located at 5 O’clock and 7 O’clock” | No current trim line; many Moentrol trims fit with the 145058 adapter kit (see below) |
| Original Moentrol (1966) | Pull out / push in, rotate; has a balancing spool on top of the valve | 5 and 7 o’clock | “there is no longer a Moen trim kit available. Replacement parts are still available in limited finishes.” |
| Moentrol (1976) | Pull out / push in, rotate; pressure balanced with volume control | “located at 2 O’clock and 7 O’clock” | “The valve below accepts any Moentrol trim kit.” |
| Posi-Temp (1985) | “Turn the handle counterclockwise on for a single level of water pressure (does not control the water flow rate).” Rotate for temperature | 2 and 7 o’clock | “The valve below accepts any Posi-Temp trim kit.” |
| M-Core 2 Series / 3 Series (2020–2021) | 2 Series: “Rotates only-adjusts water temperature”. 3 Series: rotates, and is “Pushed in and out-adjusts force or volume” | “No Escutcheon Screws” | M-Core trim; the cartridge in the trim box sets the series, and Moen says a 3 Series trim goes on a 2 Series valve body without opening the wall |
The Standard valve and the Original Moentrol look alike from the front, and Moen says so: “To determine the type of valve you have, you will need to remove the handle and the escutcheon plate.” Lever handles come off with a 7/64″ hex wrench under the handle; on a knob, “Gently pry the cap with the Moen logo on it off and remove the Phillips screw.” With the plate off, the tell is the balancing spool: “The visual difference between the Original Moentrol Valve and the Standard Valve is the balancing spool (see red arrow) on the top of the Original Moentrol Valve. The Standard Valve does not have one.”
Step 2: Match the Trim Family to the Valve
Moen’s comparison chart answers the question people ask most, “Is the trim compatible with other Moen valves?”, with “No No No No” for the M-Core 2 Series, M-Core 3 Series, PosiTemp and Moentrol. Every one of them is an M-Pact system and pressure balanced, but a Posi-Temp trim only fits a Posi-Temp valve, and so on. The chart also tells you where the cartridge lives: “Does the cartridge come with the valve or trim? Trim Trim Valve Valve”, so a Posi-Temp or Moentrol valve ships with its cartridge (1222 or 1225), while an M-Core valve gets its 1212 or 1213 cartridge from the trim box.
| Valve family | Cartridge service kit (Moen) | Volume control? | Handle (Moen) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Posi-Temp | 1222 | No: “Temperature Only” | “Rotate Only” |
| Moentrol | 1225 | Yes: “Volume and Temperature” | “Push/Pull and Rotate” |
| M-Core 2 Series | 1212 (gray) | No | “Rotate Only” |
| M-Core 3 Series | 1213 (blue) | Yes | “Lift and Rotate” |
The trim listings on Amazon say the same thing in part numbers. Moen’s Gibson Posi-Temp trim listing: “Requires Moen Posi-Temp valve #2510, 2520, 2570, or 2590 (sold separately)” and “Compatible Posi-Temp installations typically have escutcheon screws positioned near the 1:00 and 7:00 positions.” Moen’s Align Moentrol trim listing: “This trim kit requires valve #3510, 3520, or 3570 to complete the installation.” If the number stamped on your valve or printed on the old trim box is in one of those lists, you know the family. (Delta works differently: one MultiChoice valve takes the 13/14, 17 and 17T trims; see our Delta trim guide.)

Step 3: The One Conversion Moen Allows
A Standard valve is the only old valve that can take new trim, and only with an adapter: “With the use of a Moen 145058 adapter kit (Sold Separately), the shower valve below will accept many Moentrol trim kits that uses a 7″ round escutcheon, except for the Flara, Doux, Weymouth, Arris, 90 Degree or Voss product lines.” Moen’s conversion article repeats the limits: “Must purchase 145058 Adapter Kit” and “New trim must have 7″ round escutcheon plate.” The kit is two screws and a plate: “Thread the two Phillips screws (#2) into the standard valve. Both of the Phillips screws must be installed side-by-side either through the top or bottom. Using the top right and bottom left holes on the adapter plate (#1), install the new Moentrol escutcheon plate.”
Two cautions. The Standard valve is “Non-Pressure balanced”, and the adapter does not change that; the new trim only changes the look. And the Original Moentrol cannot be converted at all: “Although Moen no longer manufactures new trim kits to fit this valve, individual parts and trim pieces are available at 1-800-BUY-MOEN.” On September 25, 2026 the only 145058 listings on Amazon were look-alike kits from other sellers, so the adapter is not linked here.
M-Core: The Trim Decides the Series
M-Core is different from the older families because the flow cartridge is in the trim box: “Unlike the Moentrol and PosiTemp systems where the cartridge is included with the valve, the M-Core flow cartridge is included with the trim kit.” That is why Moen can upgrade a 2 Series to a 3 Series without opening the wall: “No, it is not necessary to open the wall or change the valve body.” What you buy is a 3 Series trim, which “includes the decorative handle, escutcheon and 3 function flow cartridge part number 1213.” The 2 Series is temperature only, with its indicators “located at the 3 O’clock position”; the 3 Series adds volume control and puts indicators at 9 and 3 o’clock. To confirm which you have, Moen says “the installation guide provided with the trim kit will have the Series number located in the title.”
One more M-Core detail before ordering a cartridge: “A Shower only system would use a 3 Port Valve” and “A Tub and Shower system would use a 4 Port Valve”, and Moen’s cartridge instructions differ by port count. On September 25, 2026 the Moen-branded 1212 and 1213 cartridge listings on Amazon showed only a few units left, so they are not linked; Moen’s articles are in the sources.
Two- and Three-Handle Showers
There is no trim kit to buy for these. Moen: “Is there trim available for a two or three-handle shower system? No, all two/three handle shower systems are sold as complete kits that include the valve and trim; however, replacement parts can be purchased.” Both use two 1224 cartridges (“1 Required for hot 1 Required for cold”), and the three-handle diverter changed in 2010: the 94543 before (“White plastic body and Brass stem”, “Secured by a Brass hex nut”) and the 116719 after (“Clear plastic shell, blue rubber seals, and Brass stem”, “Secured by a Copper retaining clip”).
FAQ
Can I put a new Moen trim kit on my old shower valve?
Only within the same family. Moen says its trim kits are not interchangeable: a Posi-Temp valve takes any Posi-Temp trim, a Moentrol valve takes any Moentrol trim, and an M-Core valve takes M-Core trim, where the trim’s cartridge sets the series (Moen says a 3 Series trim fits a 2 Series valve body). The one exception is the Standard valve (1960 to the early 2000s), which accepts many 7-inch round Moentrol trims with the 145058 adapter kit.
How do I tell a Moen Posi-Temp from a Moentrol?
By the handle. A Posi-Temp handle only rotates; Moen says it turns counterclockwise for a single level of water pressure and does not control the flow rate. A Moentrol handle pulls out to turn on, pushes in to shut off, and rotates for temperature. Both have escutcheon screws at 2 and 7 o’clock.
What do the escutcheon screw positions mean on a Moen shower?
Screws at 5 and 7 o’clock mean a Standard valve (1960 to the early 2000s) or the short-lived Original Moentrol from the late 1960s. Screws at 2 and 7 o’clock mean a Moentrol or a Posi-Temp. No screws on a single-handle plate means an M-Core.
Which Moen valves do Posi-Temp and Moentrol trims fit?
Moen’s Amazon listings name them: Posi-Temp trims require valve 2510, 2520, 2570 or 2590, and Moentrol trims require valve 3510, 3520 or 3570. Both families are built on Moen’s M-PACT common valve system, which is why the style can change without replumbing.
Does the M-Core cartridge come with the valve?
No. Moen includes the M-Core flow cartridge with the trim kit, not the valve, and the 2 Series (1212, gray) and 3 Series (1213, blue) cartridges differ. Upgrading a 2 Series to a 3 Series is a new 3 Series trim kit on the same valve body.

Bottom Line
Name the valve before you shop. Rotate-only handle and screws at 2 and 7: Posi-Temp trim. Pull/push handle and screws at 2 and 7: Moentrol trim. No screws: M-Core trim; the trim box sets the series. Screws at 5 and 7: pull the plate; a Standard valve can take a 7-inch Moentrol trim with the 145058 adapter, an Original Moentrol cannot.
