For a new plug-in control kit, compare the InSinkErator STS-OO for a disposal and compatible instant-hot-water dispenser, or the Moen ARC-4200-CHSRS for a single compatible disposal. If an existing switch works and you only want another finish, a compatible decorative button may be enough. Buying a button alone will not add an air switch.
This guide compares maker instructions and exact listings, not hands-on durability tests. It covers the control accessory. For motor, mount and grinding choices, use our garbage disposal guide.

Before You Buy a Switch
- Keep a working control if it meets your needs. Moving the button to the sink can be convenient, but it does not improve grinding or clear a jam.
- Check the installed model. A batch-feed disposal uses its own starting arrangement; do not bypass its interlock to add a countertop button.
- Measure the hole and deck. Account for the mounting nut, tubing route and room under the sink. A finish that matches your faucet does not establish fit.
- Check power first. These modules need the specified grounded receptacle and a compatible cord-connected disposal. A hardwired unit or a receptacle powered only by a wall switch needs an electrical installation check.
Replacing an older InSinkErator switch? Check its module label against the CPSC single-outlet recall. Models 76703, STS-SOSN, 78251 and 74300, sold from 2005 through October 2017, are listed. Stop using an affected switch and contact InSinkErator for the free replacement before paying for another kit. The dual-outlet models compared below are different models.

InSinkErator STS-OO Dual-Outlet Kit
6-ft air tube · 33-in. module cord · Chrome and White buttons · alternating dual outlets
Choose this kit when you want a sink-top disposal control and have a compatible instant-hot-water dispenser to connect to the second outlet. It also operates with just the disposal connected. The standard STS-OO kit includes the power module and its cord, air tubing, mounting hardware and Chrome/White button choices.
The second outlet alternates power. Pressing the button transfers power between outlets. A connected dispenser stops receiving power while the disposal runs, then receives power again when grinding is switched off. Skip this arrangement if your second appliance requires uninterrupted power; it is not an ordinary power strip.
InSinkErator specifies a 1-1/4- to 1-1/2-inch mounting opening and a standard 1-1/2-inch deck limit. Its installation guide calls for a 1-1/4-inch new hole and the supplied washer for larger existing openings. For a thicker deck, ask InSinkErator for the appropriate extended transmitter before ordering. Have a suitable installer assess a new stone-counter hole.
Pick the finish, not another performance tier. STS-OOSN is the Satin Nickel dual-outlet kit, with a Satin Nickel button included. The manufacturer’s catalog identifies STS-OO as part 76696 and STS-OOSN as 76696A-ISE. Some retailer fields write the first model as STS-00; match the kit, part number and contents rather than treating the zeros as a separate upgrade.
- Complete controller kit with 6-foot air tube
- Chrome/White or Satin Nickel kit choices
- Alternating second outlet for a compatible hot-water dispenser
- Second outlet is not continuously powered during grinding
- Disposal power cord is separate
- Thicker decks require a confirmed extended transmitter
Verdict: Compare it for the alternating dispenser outlet or the included Chrome/White finish choices. It does not remove the need for the correct disposal power cord or electrical setup.

Moen ARC-4200-CHSRS
ARC-4200 controller · one outlet · 10-ft air tube · Chrome and Spot Resist Stainless listing
Compare the Moen when you need one controlled disposal outlet and the longer included air tube suits the route under your sink. Moen’s platform sheet supports all Moen-branded disposals. For another brand, confirm its exact model and electrical requirements instead of assuming the button’s appearance means compatibility.
CHSRS and base-only are different purchases. The exact linked ARC-4200-CHSRS listing includes buttons in Chrome and Spot Resist Stainless. Moen’s linked ARC-4200 platform sheet says finished buttons are sold separately. That base-unit wording does not establish the contents of every retail bundle: verify CHSRS on the order and both finishes in the selected listing. The parts sheet identifies AS-4201 finish-specific button parts.
The platform sheet specifies a 1-3/8-inch hole, a 1-1/2-inch maximum deck and 10 feet of 1/8-inch air tubing. Its controller is rated 120 V, 60 Hz, 12 A. A longer tube is a layout option, not evidence that the kit is more reliable. Check receptacle access, controller orientation and space around the mounting nut against Moen’s instructions.
- One-outlet controller for a compatible disposal
- 10-foot air tube on the ARC-4200 platform
- Linked CHSRS listing includes two button finishes
- Base-only ARC-4200 listings can omit finished buttons
- 1-3/8-inch mounting hole and 1-1/2-inch standard deck limit
- No second controlled appliance outlet
Verdict: A focused single-disposal option for a verified compatible setup. Choose the CHSRS bundle deliberately; a base-only listing can leave you needing a finished button.
Only Changing the Button Finish?
The InSinkErator STC-MTBLK is a Matte Black decorative replacement button for compatible STS assemblies. Its listing specifies STS-OO and STS-OOSN and excludes the actuator and switch. It is not a complete air-switch kit: it supplies neither a power module nor the air tube. Confirm your existing assembly works and accepts this part before choosing a finish.

A dead disposal does not prove the decorative button needs replacement. Follow the exact disposal and control troubleshooting instructions, or contact the maker. Our disposal-not-working guide helps sort the next check without treating every failure as a new appliance purchase.
Power Cord, Installation and Warranty Checks
The air button sends an air pulse; the under-sink controller still switches electricity. Do not treat it as waterproof, childproof or a substitute for required electrical protection. Both reviewed controls latch on and off: releasing the button does not stop the disposal. Both manuals warn it may start when the module is plugged in; follow their setup and on/off test before use.
InSinkErator’s guide requires its module on the cabinet wall within 3 feet of the receptacle and disposal, connected to a dedicated, grounded, continuously energized 120 V AC outlet. Moen calls for a grounded 120 V household receptacle and a controller orientation that permits drainage. Have an electrician resolve hardwiring, switched-only power or circuit questions under the exact instructions and local requirements.
The module cord is not the disposal cord. STS-OO includes a 33-inch cord for the module; that does not put a cord on your disposal. InSinkErator’s current catalog also lists an STS-EZ integrated air-switch/cord option for EZ Connect disposals. Compare that exact accessory with the maker if yours uses EZ Connect instead of buying two incompatible parts. We have not reviewed or linked that alternative here. See the disposal replacement planning guide if the job includes a new appliance or electrical work.
InSinkErator specifies a one-year over-the-counter replacement warranty for these switches, separate from a disposal’s in-home warranty. The STS-OO retailer data has a conflicting “No Warranty” field; verify coverage with InSinkErator and keep the receipt. Moen’s current product page and specification list a one-year limited warranty; its manual body also says one year despite a lifetime-warranty heading. Do not buy either accessory expecting the faucet’s or disposal’s longer warranty.
FAQ
Do I need a complete air-switch kit or just a button?
A new installation needs the compatible power controller, air tubing and complete button/transmitter assembly. A decorative replacement button changes the finish on an existing compatible assembly; it does not replace a failed controller or supply the missing kit. Identify the installed model before ordering a part.
Do both outlets on the InSinkErator switch stay powered?
No. The STS-OO and STS-OOSN dual-outlet system alternates power between its two outlets. A compatible instant-hot-water dispenser loses power while the disposal runs, then regains power when the disposal is switched off. It is not a two-outlet strip that supplies both appliances continuously.
Will a garbage disposal air switch fit any counter hole?
Measure the actual hole and deck thickness. InSinkErator specifies a 1-1/4- to 1-1/2-inch opening; its manual calls for a 1-1/4-inch new hole and a washer for larger existing openings. Moen specifies 1-3/8 inches. Both standard assemblies list a 1-1/2-inch maximum deck. InSinkErator directs thicker-deck buyers to its extended transmitter; confirm the exact part before purchase.
Can I add an air switch to a hardwired disposal?
These kits control a disposal through a plug-in power module. A hardwired unit may require an approved cord and changes to the electrical installation. Have a qualified electrician check the disposal instructions, receptacle, circuit and local requirements before buying; do not improvise a plug conversion or bypass a batch-feed interlock.
Is an air switch a hold-to-run or childproof control?
The reviewed controls latch: press and release to start, then press and release again to stop. Releasing the button does not stop a running disposal. They are not childproof controls. Follow the exact installation and supervision instructions; both manuals warn that the disposal may start when the power module is plugged in.
How These Switches Were Compared
The comparison uses current maker pages, specification and installation sheets, the InSinkErator accessory catalog and exact retail listings. Recommendations follow control type, included parts and installation fit; there are no invented durability scores or hands-on claims. Read how we pick and about Plumbing Picks.
