Best Compact Garbage Disposal: Width, Height & Fit

For a narrow cabinet, start with the Waste King L-1001. Its published drawing is narrower than the InSinkErator Evolution .75HP’s. Choose the Evolution if you have room for its wider body and want SoundSeal insulation and a three-stage grind. Neither is a guaranteed fit: measure the sink, drain route and neighboring equipment before ordering.

For motor and noise choices beyond a tight cabinet, see our best garbage disposal guide.

Small-space check: a disposal can fit under the bowl and still leave nowhere for its elbow, filter cartridge removal or faucet hose. Horsepower and “compact” branding do not give you those clearances.

Two compact disposals, two different fit decisions

Use these as drawing dimensions, not a promise that the whole installation fits. The height reference points differ. On a phone, swipe the table; with a keyboard, focus the table region and use the arrow keys.

Dimensions and core contents: Waste King L-1001 specification (PDF); Evolution dimensions: InSinkErator EZ Connect manual (PDF). Package contents also come from the exact Amazon listings linked in the table. Do not subtract these two heights to predict storage space: one drawing starts at the flange and the other at the sink.

Measure five things before choosing

  1. Clear width around the sink opening. Measure to the cabinet wall, supply pipes, filter housings and any second bowl. Mark where the widest part of the proposed unit will sit. Include the elbow and dishwasher hose, not just the motor body.
  2. Height using the maker’s reference point. A deep sink takes space before the disposal starts. Match your measurement to the drawing’s flange or sink reference, then check the bottom of the unit against the cabinet floor and equipment below it. Leave usable access; these documents do not supply a single clearance allowance that works in every cabinet.
  3. Outlet position and the route to the trap. Compare the outlet center with the existing connection, and trace the tube route. InSinkErator’s drawing shows a 4-in tailpipe dimension below the outlet center and a 5-in horizontal centerline-to-elbow dimension. Its support guide requires a slight downward pitch if a straight discharge tube is used. A body that clears the floor can still have an unusable drain connection.
  4. Sink thickness and mount. Measure at the drain opening, where the flange clamps the sink. Waste King’s L-1001 limit is ½ in; do not assume its supplied flange will fit a thick farmhouse sink. Check any alternative flange or adapter with the maker before relying on it.
  5. Power and future access. Identify plug-in versus hardwire and the suitable switch/control before ordering. Reserve space to remove a water-filter cartridge and to let a pull-down faucet hose travel. Photograph the existing label, flange and plumbing so you can compare the exact replacement.

Installation details: InSinkErator EZ Connect manual (PDF) and InSinkErator EZ Connect installation guide. If the proposed drain runs uphill or the electrical connection is unclear, have a plumber or electrician check the arrangement before buying. Shut off electrical power before handling the disposal; never put a hand inside it.

NARROWER DRAWING WIDTH

Waste King L-1001 with extra 1025 guard and stopper

Choose it for width, not for a shortest-height claim. The 5¼-in drawing width makes the L-1001 worth comparing beside a filter or in a narrow cabinet. Its 12¾-in flange-to-bottom dimension, outlet and pipe route still have to work. Waste King lists a 1½-in drainpipe connection and a ⅞-in rubber dishwasher drain hose connection.

The core model has a ½ HP motor, galvanized grind components, removable splash guard and front reset button. It is continuous feed and needs a suitable control. The cord is pre-installed. Waste King’s specification names no sound insulation, so choose the Evolution instead if sound treatment is a priority and you have room.

What you are buying: the linked B08M1P67L2 package is an L-1001 plus the 1025 accessory. Waste King already lists a guard, stopper, drain elbow and EZ Mount assembly with the core disposal. The additional accessory changes neither motor performance nor dimensions; you may have no use for a spare. Check the seller and bundle contents before ordering.

Skip it if the ½-in sink-thickness limit fails, you need sound insulation, or the outlet cannot reach the drain correctly. An existing InSinkErator ring is not automatically an EZ Mount fit. Our InSinkErator versus Waste King mount guide explains mount changes and the separately sold adapter; do not assume that adapter is in this bundle.

SOUND INSULATION WHEN WIDTH ALLOWS

InSinkErator Evolution .75HP Advanced Series

Choose it when 8¼ in of body width, the drain and service access all fit. This continuous-feed model combines a ¾ HP induction motor, three-stage MultiGrind and Quiet SoundSeal. Those are manufacturer features, not our noise, jam-rate or durability test results. Its published 12¼-in height does not make it the better fit in every cabinet.

What you are buying: the B0CDMH8PVY listing explicitly includes an EZ Connect hardwire adapter and sells the EZ Connect power cord separately. InSinkErator’s current page also describes an 81224K kit with a cord, while its specification table says no cord. That kit description does not establish the contents of this Amazon ASIN. For a plug-in setup, confirm the correct EZ Connect cord and connection instructions; the manual says not to reuse an old cord.

Skip it if its wider body blocks neighboring equipment, its outlet cannot drain correctly, or your power connection is unresolved. A matching existing InSinkErator mounting assembly may be reusable under the maker’s instructions; retaining the ring does not guarantee that the new outlet lines up. Read the supplied instructions before replacing the unit.

Why Badger 5 is not our guaranteed shortest-fit pick

InSinkErator’s current Badger 5 specification (PDF) has two height figures: its specification table says 11½ in overall, but the dimension drawing marks 12⅝ in. The sheet does not explain the discrepancy. The older corded Amazon model also has a different model number from the current maker page.

Do not order against an 11½-in gap and assume it will fit. Ask InSinkErator for the mounting drawing that applies to the exact unit you will receive. Even the larger height figure does not settle the outlet, elbow and access space. Our Badger model guide covers the different names and the document conflict.

Do you need a new disposal at all?

If a working disposal fits and you only want more storage, first check whether an organizer, bottles or a poorly placed filter creates the obstruction. Replacing it with a narrow model may still leave the same elbow or service conflict. For a humming unit, follow the exact maker’s jam and reset instructions before assuming it needs replacement; our humming disposal guide explains the checks. Use the replacement guide to decide when the plumbing or electrical work needs help.

Compact garbage disposal FAQ

What is the best compact garbage disposal for a narrow cabinet?

The Waste King L-1001 is the narrower of these two choices: its maker drawing shows 5¼ inches across, compared with 8¼ inches for the Evolution .75HP. It still needs room for its mount, discharge elbow, drain and service access. Choose it only after checking the complete installation, including Waste King’s ½-inch maximum sink thickness.

Is a compact garbage disposal always shorter?

No. Narrower and shorter are separate measurements. Waste King’s L-1001 drawing shows 12¾ inches from the top of its flange to the bottom; InSinkErator’s EZ Connect drawing shows 12¼ inches below the sink. Those reference points differ, so the numbers alone do not establish which leaves more space in your cabinet.

Will a compact disposal fit beside an under-sink water filter?

Only if both products and their service paths fit. Check the disposal’s widest section, elbow and hose route, then reserve the filter maker’s required space to remove cartridges. A body that fits next to the filter can still block cartridge removal or the faucet’s moving pull-down hose.

Does the Evolution .75HP include a power cord?

The B0CDMH8PVY listing linked here includes an EZ Connect hardwire adapter and says the EZ Connect power cord is sold separately. InSinkErator also sells other kits, so check the exact package rather than assuming every Evolution .75HP box contains the same parts. Do not reuse an old cord against the maker’s instructions.

Can I use the Badger 5’s 11½-inch figure to guarantee a fit?

No. The current Badger 5 specification table says 11½ inches overall, while the drawing on that sheet marks 12⅝ inches. The documents do not explain that discrepancy, and older Amazon units may have a different model number. Confirm the exact unit and applicable mounting drawing with InSinkErator before buying for a tight clearance.

Can a smaller disposal solve a drain connection that is too high?

Not necessarily. Body height does not establish outlet height or a usable drain route. InSinkErator specifies a slight downward pitch for a straight discharge tube. If the proposed connection would run uphill, have a plumber check the sink and drain arrangement before buying; choosing a smaller motor does not guarantee a lower or higher outlet.

How these picks were selected

This is a document-based fit comparison, not a hands-on installation or noise test. We matched manufacturer drawings and instructions to the exact linked listing contents, then separated width, height reference points, plumbing and power requirements. Sources and listings were read October 7, 2026. Seller, availability and package contents can change; check the exact purchase before ordering.

We did not recommend the bare L-1001 listing because its stainless-component and five-year claims conflict with Waste King’s current L-1001 sheet. We also did not rank the Evolution by warranty length: its current product page says nine years while the linked 2023 manual lists eight. Confirm the applicable warranty with the maker for the exact unit and purchase. More about our selection method and Plumbing Picks.
