Deep Socket Sets

For metric hand work, the TEKTON SHD91106 is a 12-piece 3/8-inch-drive deep 6-point set from 8 to 19 mm on a rail. For SAE fasteners with an impact wrench, the GEARWRENCH 84942N is a 12-piece 1/2-inch-drive deep impact set from 3/8 to 1-1/16 inch. Neither includes a 1-1/2-inch socket, so for water heater elements check your element’s size and use a dedicated element wrench.

Neither set is a complete answer to every plumbing fastener. Identify your required sizes and special tools before choosing the package.

Drive size identifies the square connection to the handle or power tool. It does not identify the nut size. Match both ends before deciding that a socket will fit the job.

TEKTON SHD91106: 3/8-inch metric hand-drive selection

Choose TEKTON SHD91106 when you need deep, six-point metric sockets for hand use. The maker lists twelve sizes (tekton.com), every whole millimeter from 8 through 19, with a storage rail.

Skip it if the job needs SAE sizes, impact operation, a ratchet included in the package or a particular size outside that range.

The checked standard new Amazon.com offer showed stock and matching SHD91106 model and manufacturer-part fields. Confirm that the delivered set is the deep twelve-piece version.

The rail keeps the supplied sockets together. Decide separately where the handle and any other required accessories will live in your plumbing kit.

GEARWRENCH 84942N: 1/2-inch SAE impact selection

Choose GEARWRENCH 84942N when the required SAE sizes and access suit a deep impact set. The maker lists twelve six-point sockets (gearwrench.com): 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4, 13/16, 7/8, 15/16, 1 and 1-1/16 inch, with a case.

Skip it if you need metric sockets, a complete ratchet kit or a 1-1/2-inch element socket. Its largest included size is 1-1/16 inch.

The checked standard new Amazon.com offer showed stock and exact 84942N model and manufacturer-part fields. Keep the N suffix when matching this selection.

Confirm access around the actual fastener. A deep impact socket still needs room for its body and the selected drive tool.

Deep does not mean an unlimited pass-through

Measure the space above the nut as well as the space around it. A projecting stud can reach an internal shoulder before the socket fully engages the nut.

For a repeat task, identify the required working depth and compare it with the individual socket drawing. Overall tool length alone does not establish useful internal clearance.

Access can fail at either end: the outside wall may not enter a recess, or the handle may not have room to turn once the socket is seated. Check the complete assembly in the available space.

When a nut is already damaged, a longer socket is not automatically the remedy. Identify the fastener condition and choose an appropriate removal method before applying more force.

Faucet mounting nuts need a shape check

A faucet mounting nut may be a regular hexagon, a broad plastic nut, a winged part or another proprietary shape. A standard six-point socket only belongs on a compatible fastener.

Look at the route to the nut before buying. Supply lines, mounting studs and the sink bowl may block a straight approach even when the nominal socket size is correct.

Our basin-wrench guide covers another tool category for restricted sink access. A basin wrench and a deep socket solve different access problems; choose from the actual installation.

Keep the faucet’s mounting instructions with the tool selection. A snug socket fit does not establish the permitted tightening force for a plastic or metal mounting assembly.

Strut hardware: match the actual hex and instructions

Specify the nut or bolt head you will turn. The channel size, rod diameter and socket opening are separate measurements.

Make a small job list before choosing a set: fastener type, actual hex size, available approach and whether the work requires a torque-controlled final tightening step. This is more useful than buying by piece count alone.

Check the hardware maker’s assembly instructions for the intended combination of channel, fitting, fastener and finish. A socket set does not certify a support assembly or its capacity.

Do not alter hardware or remove surrounding support to make a bulky tool fit. Reassess access and the approved installation method when the intended tool cannot reach safely.

Water-heater elements need their own socket check

Neither featured set includes a 1-1/2-inch socket. Eastman’s 45058 element wrench (eastmanplumbing.com) illustrates that separate size category. Its adapter and intended element use do not turn either featured set into an element-removal kit.

Read the exact heater’s instructions and identify its element arrangement. Do not assume every heater uses the same hex or the same replacement procedure.

Our water-heater element wrench guide covers dedicated options. Check clearance around the element, full tool engagement and the appliance’s permitted service method.

This socket comparison is not a heater-service procedure. Arrange the required isolation, verification and qualified service for the appliance before any component is disturbed.

Hand sockets, impact sockets and adapters

Use sockets and accessories rated for the actual drive method. GEARWRENCH’s impact-adapter guidance (gearwrench.com) explicitly warns against standard chrome hand sockets in impact applications.

An adapter changes the connection size; it does not upgrade a hand socket to impact duty. Check every extension, joint and adapter in the chain.

Impact suitability also does not authorize impact operation on every plumbing component. The equipment or fastener instructions still determine the permitted installation and removal method.

Do not treat a tool’s maximum output as a tightening specification. Where a defined torque is required, select the specified method and suitable measuring tool rather than judging by how firmly an impact tool stops.

Inspect and work with control

The CCOHS wrench guidance (ccohs.ca) calls for the correct tool size, inspection, a stable position and controlled force. Check the socket, handle and retention before loading the assembly.

Keep the fastener fully engaged and plan for the possibility that it releases suddenly. Protect your eyes where fragments or overhead debris are possible.

Do not add an improvised pipe to a handle or strike an ordinary wrench to gain force. Stop when a stuck fastener calls for a different service method.

After the job, clean and inspect the tools and return each socket to its identified position. A missing size should be obvious before the next call, rather than discovered while reaching into a difficult space.

Buy around the jobs your kit must cover

  1. List the fasteners. Actual metric and SAE sizes, including any special shapes.
  2. Check access. Outer clearance, internal depth, stud projection and handle movement.
  3. Select the drive. Match the existing handle or intended tool.
  4. Verify the operating method. Hand or impact rating for every accessory and permission for the component.
  5. Compare the contents. Sockets, rail or case, handle and accessories are separate entries.
  6. Plan the gaps. Order a required specialist socket separately.

For a compact kit, start with the sizes established by your recurring work. For a shared kit, label the storage and record missing pieces so the next person can assess whether the set is complete.

Keep the original set number in your tool record. Replacing one lost socket by its size alone can overlook differences in depth, drive, operating method or clearance.

Frequently asked questions

Does 3/8-inch drive mean a 3/8-inch nut?

No. Drive size is the square connection to the handle. The socket opening must separately match the fastener.

Do these sets include a ratchet?

The featured selections are sockets with a rail or case. Choose a compatible handle separately and verify the delivered package contents.

Can a deep socket reach over every long stud?

No. Check usable internal depth and the stud projection, not only the socket’s overall length.

Do these sets include a 1-1/2-inch element socket?

No. Neither featured set includes that size. Check the exact heater and a suitable dedicated tool.

Can an impact adapter make a hand socket impact-rated?

No. Every socket and accessory must be suitable for the actual drive method.
