Not sure? Answer three questions

Find your filter

Choose a filter you can fit at home and keep using.

Got a tape measure? The Will it fit? checker tests your measurements against each pick. Neither tool replaces a water test or an in-person check.

1What do you know about your water?
2Which setup can you use?
3How much drinking and cooking water a day?

Answer all three questions to get a starting point.

Picks by need

There’s a pitcher and a tap mount here, plus two sizes of under-sink carbon system and an RO system. All five exact models have a lead-reduction claim in a certifier’s listing. [4] [6] [8] [17]

Brita Everyday Elite Pitcher

The tradeoff. Use the blue Elite cartridge. A different cartridge in the same pitcher changes the lead claim. [4] [5]

Before you buy. At 1 gallon a day, change around 120 days (about four months), before the six-month date. At 2 gallons, change around 60 days. [4] [5]

What to budget
You’ll need one Elite OB06 at each change. The single-pack refill below identifies OB06 directly. [4] [15]

PUR PLUS Vertical Faucet System

The tradeoff. No pitcher refills, but there’s a housing on the spout with its own filtered-water setting. Keep hot water out of the filter, and switch to unfiltered when your utility tells you to flush the lines. [3] [7]

Before you buy. Remove the aerator and look for internal or external threads. PUR covers both. Use the device or the correct supplied adapter, then make sure it fits securely. [7]

What to budget
At 1 gallon a day, a 100-gallon cartridge lasts about 100 days, so the 3-month change usually comes first. At 2 gallons, change at 50 days. [7]

Aquasana Claryum 3-Stage

The tradeoff. With the filter out of sight, your main faucet stays as it is. You’ll need cabinet space and installation work, and the replacement sets cost more. It isn’t reverse osmosis, and a TDS reading won’t test its lead reduction. [9] [10]

Before you buy. The kit: a tap and tubing, plus a 3/8-inch brass tee. Use a sprayer/soap opening or a hole at least 1/2 inch across. Aquasana recommends a pro for drilling. [10]

What to budget
At 2 gallons a day, 600 gallons takes roughly 300 days. Budget for the earlier 6-month change. Buy AQ-5300R for this system; it isn’t the Max Flow refill. [8] [10]

Aquasana Claryum 3-Stage Max Flow

The tradeoff. You gain 200 gallons of rated cartridge life and a higher rated flow, in a taller housing. At 3 gallons a day, 800 gallons takes about 267 days, so the six-month change comes first. [8] [19]

Before you buy. AQ-5300+ is taller than AQ-5300; it isn’t just a new name. Check the 15.85-inch space requirement and leave room for service before buying the larger set. [15] [19]

What to budget
At 3 gallons a day, plan for the six-month change before you’ve used 800 gallons. This takes the larger AQ-5300+R replacement set. [8] [19]

APEC Ultimate RO-90

The tradeoff. RO needs a storage tank and sends reject water down the drain. Compare it using WQA’s 33.3 gallons/day. The maker’s “90 GPD” is a nominal membrane rating, not a promise of 90 gallons at your tap. [17] [18]

Before you buy. Allow the manual’s 17 × 6 × 18 inches for the unit, plus a separate tank space 11 inches across and 18 inches high. It needs a cold-water supply and dedicated tap, with a drain connection. [18]

Exact system

Lead evidence
WQA · NSF/ANSI 58 [17]
What to budget
Budget for FILTER-SET stages 1–3 at the first annual service. The membrane and post-filter aren’t included. Their longer schedules depend on source water and maintenance. [18] [23]

Matching refills, sold separately

Match the cartridge code. A similar-looking filter may be the wrong one. The RO-90 set below contains only its three prefilters; the membrane and final carbon filter have separate schedules.

Plumber’s fit check

Check the model’s instructions before buying. It needs to fit your cabinet and your daily routine.

Illustration of a sink cabinet with two shutoffs and braided supplies, a P-trap continuing into the wall, a separate tap and unbranded filter housings; use the maker’s connection diagram.
1 Cold-water connection · 2 Separate tap · 3 Filter-change space. This is a generic illustration. Follow your system’s manual.Disclaimer: Illustration for visual purposes
  1. Find a working cold-water shutoff

Shut off the water before you open a supply connection. Make sure the valve closes, then check its outlet. The Aquasana kit uses a 3/8-inch compression tee and runs at 20–80 psi. [9] [10] Call a plumber if the valve is stuck or leaking, or you can’t identify the outlet.

  2. Check the tap before the filter

PUR’s FM2500V page excludes pull-out and hand-held faucets. An under-sink system needs a separate tap location. Check the hole and connections, then put the details into the fit checker before buying. [7] [10] [18]

  3. Leave room to change the cartridges

Leave the housings where you can reach and remove them. Isaac’s maintenance tip: a post filter after carbon keeps carbon flakes from clogging aerators. Follow your system’s cartridge arrangement and flushing instructions. Don’t add an unapproved filter. [10] [18]

Isaac’s take: Know the cost before you buy: cartridges, maintenance, maybe a plumber. Most homeowners can swap cartridges themselves. Maintain the equipment.

Watch the AQ-5300 installation

Aquasana shows how to fit the AQ-5300’s dedicated tap and cold-water connection, then mount and flush the filter. It takes about six and a half minutes.

This is an AQ-5300 demonstration. Other models, especially RO systems with a tank and drain, install differently. Follow your own system’s manual.

Local water instructions. Don’t use these filters on water that isn’t safe to drink in the first place. Follow local instructions for untreated or microbiologically unsafe water. [3] [5] [9]

Will it fit? Check your numbers

Measure empty space and check connections. The tool compares each pick’s requirements with your answers. Unmeasured doesn’t mean it fits.

Water use and the existing faucet

Brita Elite is limited to 2 gallons a day. [5]

A detachable pull-down head counts as hand-held in this check. PUR excludes pull-out and hand-held faucets. [7]

Take off the old aerator to check. Don’t force an adapter. [7]

Internal or external threads alone don’t tell you whether the adapter fits. [7]

Dedicated tap and cold-water supply

If the counter needs drilling, check with a qualified installer first. [10] [18]

The supplied taps need at least a 1/2-inch hole. This tool doesn’t check deck thickness. [10] [18]

A different outlet may need an approved adapter. [10] [18]

Aquasana: 20–80 psi. For RO-90, the tool uses the manual’s more cautious 40–85 psi standard-system warranty range. [9] [18] [20]

Clear space for the filter unit

Measure empty space. Leave out the drain and disposal, along with hoses and stored items. Space for the housing isn’t the same as room to service it. [10] [18] [19]

RO only: a separate tank space and drain

Don’t count the same cabinet space twice. These fields are only for RO-90.

Check the drain location in the RO manual. [18]

This checker can’t replace a water test or an in-person plumbing check. You still need the maker’s installation instructions.

How the five fit your sink

No fit confirmed yet.

  1. Enter measurements to check all five picks.
Aquasana footprints
Both Aquasana units have a listed 12 × 4.25-inch footprint. Mount AQ-5300 at least 12 inches above the cabinet bottom; Max Flow needs 15.85 inches plus room for cartridge service. [10] [15] [19]
RO-90 pressure
RO-90’s manual gives two pressure ranges. This checker uses the standard-system warranty’s 40–85 psi, rather than the 30–100 psi range elsewhere in the manual. [18]
What a result means
This tool doesn’t check pitcher storage, counter material or deck thickness. Check local code and water chemistry separately, and test for leaks after installation.

What will the first year cost?

The box price is only part of it. Add the refill packs you’ll actually buy.

First-year purchase cost = system price + refill packs needed × pack price.

Enter 0.1 to 10 gallons. Count water through the filter, not all the water your house uses.

How the estimate works and what it leaves out

For the pitcher and tap mount, and both carbon systems: annual demand = daily gallons × 365. Service intervals = max(annual demand ÷ rated gallons, 12 ÷ maximum months). Replacement events = max(0, ceil(intervals) − 1), because the first cartridge or set is included. Packs to buy = ceil(replacement events ÷ cartridges or sets per pack).

Brita: 120 gallons / 6 months, one cartridge per refill pack. PUR: 100 gallons / 3 months, two cartridges per pack. AQ-5300: 600 gallons / 6 months. Max Flow: 800 gallons / 6 months. Use the earlier limit. Both Aquasana replacement packs contain one full set. [5] [7] [10] [19]

RO-90’s first-year budget reserves one FILTER-SET for the first annual prefilter service. Initial filters are included. There’s no assumed cartridge gallon limit. The membrane/post-filter isn’t costed; it has a separate, longer schedule. Well sediment or other water conditions can mean earlier changes. [18] [23]

Prices as of Nov 6, 2026, 5:30 AM EST. This purchase estimate doesn’t include tax, shipping, labor or extra fittings, or the cost of reject water and electricity; cartridges can need changing sooner.

How to choose

Find out what’s in the water before you buy a filter.

  1. Find out whether lead is the problem

A utility report and the EWG tap water database can give background, not a kitchen-tap test. EPA says service lines and household plumbing can add lead. Arrange a tap sample with your utility or a certified lab. [2] [14]

  2. Check the system and cartridge in the lead listing

Check the exact pairing in the certifier’s listing. EPA recommends a Standard 53 lead-reduction claim, plus Standard 42 Class I particle reduction. Neither a “lead-free” materials mark under 372 nor chlorine certification alone means the filter removes lead. [1] [3]

  3. Choose a filter you’ll maintain

Start easily with a pitcher, or skip refilling with a fixed-tap mount. An under-sink unit needs installation. Check rated capacity and the time limit. Price the replacement packs. [5] [7] [10] Isaac’s distinction: a softener handles hard water. For a contaminant-removal job, you need the right filter.

  4. Plan the first change now

Mark the start date. Change at the earlier gallon or calendar limit. Use cold water and prepare each cartridge as directed. Keep the manual. An overdue filter can be less effective. [3]

When RO or whole-house treatment makes sense

Choose RO if you need its other listed reductions

The RO-90 is the RO pick here. WQA lists this exact model for lead and other reductions, including TDS and fluoride. Choose it if those needs justify the tank and drain connection. You don’t have to buy RO for lead alone. [13] [17]

Whole house: mind the plumbing after the filter

A filter at the house inlet can’t treat lead added by pipes or fixtures farther along. That’s why these picks treat water at the drinking point. For other incoming-water problems, use the whole-house guide and compare what it treats with your tap test. [1] [2]

Questions buyers ask

Can lead be filtered out of water?

Yes. A filter certified for lead reduction can reduce lead in drinking water when used correctly. Match the model and cartridge to the certifier’s lead claim. Install it as directed and keep up with replacements. [1] [3]

Do Brita filters really remove lead?

Brita Elite OB06 does, in a listed system such as Everyday OB46. Standard OB03 for that pitcher has no lead claim. Check the code; the Brita name isn’t enough. [4]

Can I boil water to remove lead?

No. Boiling doesn’t remove lead. Use cold tap water for drinking and cooking. Follow your utility’s filtration and flushing instructions. [3]

Is a whole-house lead filter enough?

Not if pipes or fixtures add lead after the filter. A drinking-point filter treats water closer to where you use it. Test at that tap, then choose treatment for the result. [1] [2]

How much does a lead filter for water cost?

The five systems here cost $29.99–$209.99. The listed replacement packs or sets cost $17.07–$91.99. Price as of Nov 6, 2026, 5:30 AM EST. Pack sizes differ. The RO refill shown covers only stages 1–3. Add any installation work, then use the cost tool to compare maintenance. [15]

Will a water-quality meter tell me the lead level?

A TDS meter won’t tell you the lead level. Ask your utility or a certified lab for a lead-specific tap-water test and sampling instructions. [2] [11]

What state has the most lead in water?

Illinois: 561,532 projected lead service lines, the most in EPA’s September 2025 table. That counts lines, not state-wide tap-water lead concentrations or contaminated homes. Test your own tap for its lead level. [21] [2]

How we chose

We picked filters for different setups: a pitcher or faucet mount, two under-sink carbon sizes and reverse osmosis. Each lead claim matches the exact system and cartridge in a certifier’s listing. Sizes, operating limits and maintenance schedules come from the maker’s instructions and product details.

We checked new, in-stock Amazon offers on Nov 2, 2026, 9:31 AM EST. Amazon supplied the product photos and dated prices. Advanced Water sold the RO-90 and its prefilters. The other selected offers were sold by Amazon.com.

Left out: Everyday with Standard OB03 has no listed lead claim. APEC ROES-50’s WQA claim is TDS, not lead. We couldn’t match the AquaTru Classic offer’s model exactly to a certifier model. No whole-house pick: plumbing after the inlet filter can add lead.

Recall check: CPSC model and brand searches on November 2, 2026 found no matching notice for these five systems. The Brita BB07 children’s-bottle recall is for a different product. [12] [16]
