These two tools look like they do the same job and they do not. Reaching for the wrong one is how homeowners round off a nut, crack a trap, or scar a chrome fitting they then have to replace — and it is the single most common tool mistake I see under a sink.

Here is the honest split: a pipe wrench is for round steel pipe you intend to turn hard. Channel locks are for everything else. The rest of this explains why, and where each one bites you.
Channel locks vs pipe wrench: the 20-second answer
Channel locks (tongue-and-groove pliers) — adjustable serrated jaws for slip nuts, trap nuts, supply lines, and irregular shapes. Good grip, far less torque, far less damage.
The rule I actually use: if it is threaded steel pipe and it is stuck, pipe wrench. If it is a nut, a plastic trap, a chrome escutcheon, or anything you want to reuse, channel locks. Never put a pipe wrench on chrome or plastic.
What each tool is actually built to do
The pipe wrench bites — on purpose
A pipe wrench has a floating hook jaw. When you pull the handle, the jaw rocks and the hardened teeth dig into the pipe. That bite is the whole mechanism: the harder you pull, the harder it grips. It is the only hand tool that will break loose a galvanized nipple that has been threaded into a fitting since 1968.
The cost of that design is that it leaves teeth marks in everything. On black iron or galvanized pipe that is fine — nobody sees it and the pipe does not care. On a chrome supply stop, a brass compression nut, or a plated tub spout, those marks are permanent and visible, and on plastic you will crack the part.
Two details people get wrong:
- Direction matters. A pipe wrench only bites one way. If you have it on backwards it will slip, chew the pipe, and skin your knuckles. The jaw opening faces the direction of turn.
- Use two. On a threaded joint, one wrench turns and a second backs up the fitting behind it. Turn a joint without a backup wrench and you transmit the torque straight down the line — that is how people twist a fitting off inside a wall.
Channel locks grip without committing
Tongue-and-groove pliers — everyone calls them Channellocks after the brand — have an angled jaw that ratchets across many widths. The serrations grip round and irregular objects well, but the jaws stay roughly parallel and you are limited by hand strength rather than a biting cam.

Channel locks: Channellock 442, 12-inch
The Channellock 442 is the default for good reason. It uses the patented undercut tongue-and-groove design and a V-jaw, which puts more points of contact on a round object than a flat jaw does — that is the difference between turning a slip nut and rounding it. High-carbon steel, made in the USA.
For the money it is the least controversial tool purchase in plumbing.

When people get this wrong
- Pipe wrench on a chrome supply stop. The most common one. It works, and it leaves the valve looking chewed forever. Channel locks, or pad the jaws with a rag.
- Channel locks on a seized galvanized nipple. They will slip, round the pipe, and then even the pipe wrench struggles because you have destroyed the surface it needed to bite. Go to the pipe wrench first when you know it is stuck.
- One wrench instead of two. No backup wrench means the torque travels down the line to the next joint — often the one you cannot see.
- Pipe wrench on a hex nut. It rounds the corners. That is what an adjustable wrench or a proper socket is for.
- Too small a pipe wrench. Cheating a short wrench with a pipe extension on the handle bends the handle and can snap the hook jaw. Buy the length the job needs.
What actually wears out
Pipe wrenches fail at the hook jaw teeth — they round over after years and start slipping on exactly the joints you need them for. On a RIDGID that is a replaceable part, which is most of why the tool is worth buying once instead of twice. Channel locks fail at the pivot, developing slop so the jaws no longer track parallel; at that point they slip under load and it is time for a new pair.
So which do you need?
- Homeowner, basic kit: channel locks first. Most of what goes wrong under a sink is nuts and traps, not threaded steel. Add a pipe wrench when you meet your first galvanized joint.
- Anyone touching threaded steel or gas pipe: two pipe wrenches, not one. Backing up the fitting is not optional.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use channel locks instead of a pipe wrench?
For nuts, traps, supply lines and light work, yes — channel locks are often the better choice because they do less damage. For threaded steel or iron pipe that is stuck, no. Channel locks will slip and round the pipe, and once you have polished the surface even a pipe wrench has trouble biting it.
Will a pipe wrench damage chrome fittings?
Yes, essentially always. A pipe wrench grips by biting hardened teeth into the surface, so marking the work is how it functions rather than a defect. Use channel locks on chrome, or pad the jaws with a rag if you must use a wrench.
