CPVC Fittings Guide

For CTS CPVC water lines you mostly need couplings, 90° and 45° elbows, tees, caps, brass male or female adapters and ball valves, all in copper tube size, not Schedule 40. Charlotte rates its FlowGuard Gold CTS system for hot and cold water at up to 180°F at 100 psi. Use CPVC cement and keep incompatible thread sealants away from it.

This guide covers 1/2 to 2-inch copper-tube-size (CTS) CPVC fittings for home water distribution.

The CPVC fittings you will use most

Common CTS CPVC fittings for house water lines
FittingJob
CouplingJoins two pipe ends in a straight line
Quarter bend (90° elbow) and eighth bend (45°)Turns the run
TeeAdds a branch
CapCloses a pipe end, such as a stub for a future fixture
Brass male or female adapterMoves from CPVC to a threaded fitting, valve or fixture
Ball valveShuts off a branch

Charlotte Pipe’s FlowGuard Gold CTS CPVC submittal (charlottepipe.com) shows this pattern set for 1/2 to 2-inch sizes: tee, coupling, bushing, cap, quarter bend, street quarter bend, eighth bend, and brass male and female adapters.

Two of those save space. A street quarter bend has one spigot end that glues straight into another fitting, so you skip a short piece of pipe in a tight corner. A bushing glues into a larger fitting to step down to a smaller pipe, such as a 3/4-inch tee feeding a 1/2-inch branch.

Before you buy, count every turn, branch and end on the run, then add a couple of spares. CPVC fittings are cheap compared with a second trip, and a dry-fit on the bench shows any mistakes before cement goes on.

What CTS CPVC is rated for

Charlotte’s submittal says its copper tube size (CTS) CPVC, SDR 11, is made for hot and cold domestic water distribution, for pressure service where operating temperature does not exceed 180°F at 100 psi. It states that the pipe and fittings conform to ASTM D 2846 and to NSF International Standards 14 and 61.

CTS means the outside diameter matches copper tube of the same nominal size, which is different from Schedule 40 PVC sizing. Do not mix CTS CPVC fittings with Schedule 40 PVC or CPVC pipe. Our CPVC vs PVC guide explains the sizing difference.

Joining: cement, primer and what to keep away

Charlotte’s spec calls for CPVC solvent cement conforming to ASTM F 493, and a primer conforming to ASTM F 656 where local plumbing or building codes require one. Our cement guide covers CPVC cements.

The same spec says the system must be protected from chemical agents, fire-stopping materials, thread sealants and plasticized vinyl products that can damage CPVC. That rules out grabbing any pipe dope or caulk from the truck; check that each product says it is compatible with CPVC.

Charlotte also calls for pipe and fittings made as a system by one manufacturer, installed per its current instructions and local code. Our CPVC do’s and don’ts page summarizes Charlotte’s rules.

Charlotte CTS tee and cap

Choose the Charlotte CTS 02400 1/2-inch tee to add a branch, and the Charlotte CTS 02116 1/2-inch cap to close a stub. Both listings name 1/2-inch CTS CPVC for hot and cold water distribution and carry Charlotte CTS part numbers.

On October 15, 2026, the tee’s standard new offer from a third-party seller showed limited stock with model CTS 02400 0600HA, and the cap’s showed stock with model CTS021160600HA.

NIBCO 4701 coupling and 4770 ball valve

Choose the NIBCO 4701 1/2-inch slip × slip CPVC CTS coupling for a straight joint or a repair. On October 15, 2026, the standard new offer sold by Amazon.com showed stock, listed as NIBCO C4701 1/2 SxS coupling CPVC CTS.

Choose the NIBCO 4770 1/2-inch slip × slip CPVC ball valve to add a shutoff on a branch. The listing names NIBCO Fig. 4770, CPVC, slip × slip. On October 15, 2026, its standard new offer from a third-party seller showed stock.

If your job follows a written spec that calls for one manufacturer, as Charlotte’s does, buy the fittings to match the pipe brand.

Going from CPVC to copper or a fixture

Charlotte’s system uses brass male and female adapters to move from CPVC to threaded connections. A brass threaded adapter lets you connect a valve, a water heater nipple or a copper fitting with a threaded end.

Push-to-connect fittings listed for both CPVC and copper are another way to transition without cement or solder; our push-to-connect guide covers them. Check that the fitting is listed for CTS CPVC, not just Schedule 40.

Where CPVC connects to a water heater, follow the water heater and CPVC makers’ instructions on distance and connectors; some call for a metal nipple or connector at the heater.

Frequently asked questions

What temperature and pressure is CPVC rated for?

Charlotte’s FlowGuard Gold CTS submittal lists hot and cold domestic water service at up to 180°F at 100 psi.

Can I use pipe dope on CPVC?

Only a sealant that says it is compatible with CPVC. Charlotte’s spec says the system must be protected from thread sealants and other chemicals that can damage it.

Is CTS CPVC the same size as Schedule 40 PVC?

No. CTS CPVC matches copper tube outside diameter. Do not mix it with Schedule 40 fittings.

Do I need primer on CPVC?

Charlotte’s spec says to use primer (ASTM F 656) if local plumbing or building codes require it, with CPVC cement to ASTM F 493.

How do I connect CPVC to copper?

With a brass threaded adapter or a push-to-connect fitting listed for both CTS CPVC and copper.
