Quick answer
Most ezH2O stations take Elkay’s 51300C. Shut the water, unplug, swap it with a quarter turn and flush. Newer stations reset the light themselves; older ones need RST FLTR. Pro stations take FL6 or FL10.

Which Elkay station do you have?
Elkay sells three families of bottle filler, and each one takes its own filters and resets its own way.
| Station | How to tell | Filters Elkay lists | Light reset | Flush |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original ezH2O | Green, yellow and red filter lights, and a program button under the top cover | 51300C | By hand: RST FLTR | Three minutes (Elkay help article) |
| Enhanced ezH2O | Blue light bar or color lights that reset on their own; the spec sheet says “Automatic Filter Status Reset” | 51300C, 51600C or 71300C | Automatic | Until the air is out and the flow runs clear; at least 2 gallons on bi-level units |
| Pro Filtration | A filter door with a blue shutoff lever, a blue light bar and the PlumbSMART app | FL6 or FL10, plus FSR5 sediment and FLP4 PFAS filters | Automatic | The station runs its own flush |
The full model and serial number are on the station’s label. Elkay’s help center has a page showing where the label sits on each style. Write both down before you buy anything, because the model leads you to the right manual and the serial tells you whether a recall applies.
Don’t go by the model’s first letters alone. Elkay’s current LZS8WSLK spec sheet lists an automatic filter reset, even though the model has no “EN” in front of it. The way the light behaves after a filter change is a better clue than the name.
Every Elkay manual ends with a parts list. If it names 51300C, buy 51300C. If it names three cartridges, any of them fits that station.
Check the serial first. CPSC recall 18-085 covers Elkay EZ and LZ models with serials starting 1704, 1705 or 1706. Details are in the safety section below.
Pro Filtration stations take only FL-series filters. A 51300C won’t fit them, and an FL6 won’t fit an ezH2O.

How to change the filter on an ezH2O station
These steps follow Elkay’s manuals 2000001214, 2000002265 and 1000004543, which all use the same quarter-turn filter head.
- 1Open the lower cover
Take out the two Torx T25 screws on the underside or front of the unit and lift the cover off. A towel under the filter catches the drips.
- 2Shut the water and relieve pressure
Close the supply valve to the station, then press the bottle filler or bubbler for a few seconds until the flow stops.
- 3Unplug the unit
Elkay says to disconnect power before you touch the filter. Bi-level units have two power cords, so unplug both.
- 4Remove the old filter
Turn it counterclockwise a quarter turn and pull it straight down out of the head.
- 5Cap the old filter
Take the red cap off the new filter and press it onto the old one. That keeps the old one from dripping on the way to the trash.
- 6Fit the new filter
Push it firmly into the head and turn it clockwise until it stops. The label should face you so it can be read.
- 7Write the date on it
Elkay’s maintenance sheet asks for the install date on the label. It’s how the next person knows when the year is up.
- 8Water on, then power
Open the supply, check the head for leaks, then plug the unit back in.
- 9Flush it
Run water through the bottle filler until the air is gone and the flow is clear. On bi-level units, Elkay says at least 2 gallons.
Elkay’s help article says to turn the old filter clockwise to take it out. Every manual I read says counterclockwise. Go with your station’s manual, and don’t force it if it won’t turn.
Elkay’s spec sheets say the head has a valve that closes when the filter comes out. Don’t lean on that. Every manual still says to shut the water first, and a worn valve is the last thing you want to find with the filter in your hand.
The new filter is full of air and fine carbon dust. That’s why the first water out looks cloudy or spits. It clears as you flush.
How to change a Pro Filtration filter
Pro stations have their own door, shutoff and flush. These steps follow section 7.4 of Elkay manual 2000002266.
- 1Open the filter door
Remove the two screws with a Torx T25 security bit and rotate the door forward. Tethers hold it open.
- 2Close the blue lever
Turn the blue shutoff lever so it sits across the tubing. That’s off.
- 3Relieve pressure, then power off
Dispense from the bottle filler or bubbler, then switch off the rocker switch near the door.
- 4Swap the filter
Hold a rag under it, turn the old filter counterclockwise and pull it out. Put the new filter’s cap on the old one, then press the new one in and turn it clockwise.
- 5Water on, then power
Turn the lever back so it runs along the tubing, check for leaks and switch the power on.
- 6Let it flush
The station sees the new filter and runs its own flush. Close the door and refit the screws.
Pro stations can carry a sediment filter as well. Elkay says the FSR5 goes only in the upper position, and that it should be changed once a year at the same time as the main filter. Do both on the same visit and you only open the door once.
How to reset the Elkay filter light
Most newer stations reset the light when they see a new genuine filter. Original ezH2O stations need a button press.
| Station | Normal | Change soon | Change now | After a new filter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pro Filtration | Two or three blue lights | One blue light | Solid red | Resets itself |
| Enhanced, blue lights | Two or three blue lights | One blue light | Solid red | Resets itself |
| Enhanced, color lights | Green | Yellow | Red | Resets itself |
| Original ezH2O | Green | Yellow | Red | Reset by hand |
From Elkay’s help article on filter status lights, read Oct 22, 2026.
Reset an original ezH2O by hand
- 1Take off the top cover
Remove the two Torx T25 screws on top of the bottle filler and lift the cover.
- 2Hold the program button
Press it for about 2 seconds and let go when the display changes.
- 3Wait for RST FLTR
The display scrolls between RST FLTR and SETTINGS. When RST FLTR shows, press the button once.
- 4Press again to zero it
The display reads FLTR 0 and the green light comes on.
- 5Put the cover back
Refit the top cover and its two screws, then the lower cover.
The SETTINGS menu has an RST BCNT option right next to the filter reset. It sets the bottle counter back to zero, and Elkay’s manual says there’s no way to get the old count back. Facilities that report bottles saved lose their number. Press slowly and read the display.
The same menu has FLT SIZE, set to 3000GAL or 6000GAL. It tells the station how big a filter you fitted. If your parts list allows a 51600C and you switch to it, set FLT SIZE to 6000GAL, or the light will go red at half the filter’s life.
What E013 means and how to clear it
On enhanced stations, E013 means “Missing or Incompatible Filter”. The station can’t read the filter you fitted.
| What you see | Check this | Then |
|---|---|---|
| E013 on an ENLZS8WS station | Front label readable, white tag toward the back (manual 2000001214) | Unplug for at least 30 seconds and plug back in |
| E013 on a connected ENLZSTL8WS station | Front label readable, round blue tag facing the NFC board (manual 2000002265) | Unplug for 30 seconds and restart |
| E013 and E014 together | Elkay’s tables say the NFC board is missing or unplugged | That’s a board job for a service tech, not a filter swap |
| E013 with a non-Elkay filter | The station reads a tag on Elkay’s filters | Fit the genuine filter your parts list names |
| E013 that won’t clear | Right filter, right way round, power cycled | Call Elkay support or a certified service tech |
Many “compatible with Elkay” filters sell for less. The search results for these filters even put one near the top. Elkay’s own help article says to use a genuine Elkay filter for the light to reset, and the E013 table names an incompatible filter as a cause. On an enhanced station, a knockoff can leave you with a filter that works but a light that never goes green.
My call: buy the genuine cartridge for any station that resets itself. On a school or office station, a red light that won’t clear means a work order every week.

| Filter | Key specs | Pick it if | Skip it if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elkay 51300C | 3,000 gal or 1 year, 1.5 GPM, 9-1/2 in. tall, NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401 | Your parts list names 51300C. That covers original and most enhanced ezH2O stations. | You have a Pro Filtration station. |
| Elkay 51600C | 6,000 gal or 1 year, 1.5 GPM, same size as 51300C | Your enhanced station sees heavy use and its sheet lists 51600C. | Your station is an original ezH2O whose parts list names only 51300C. |
| Elkay 71300C | 2,250 gal or 1 year, 1.1 GPM, 11-5/8 in. tall, adds PFOA and PFOS | Your water test or building policy calls for PFOA and PFOS reduction. | You want the fastest fill or the fewest changes. |
| Elkay FL10 | 10,000 gal or 1 year, 1.5 GPM, antiscalant, IAPMO R&T certified | Your Pro station fills a lot of bottles and you want one change a year. | You have any ezH2O station. |
| Elkay FL6 | 6,000 gal or 1 year, 1.5 GPM, antiscalant, IAPMO R&T certified | Your Pro station sees normal traffic. | You have any ezH2O station. |
FL10 stock was low on the day I checked. If it’s gone, FL6 fits the same Pro stations; you’ll just change it sooner on a busy one.
How long each filter lasts
Every Elkay cartridge has two limits: its gallons and one year. Whichever comes first ends the filter.
The bottle counter on the front of the station is a handy gauge. Elkay’s manual for the original ezH2O says the counter treats one bottle as 20 oz. So 3,000 gallons is about 19,200 bottles on the counter.
Write the counter number on the filter label next to the date when you change it. Next time, the checker below tells you how much of the filter is used.
| Filter | Rated gallons | About this many 20 oz bottles | Flow |
|---|---|---|---|
| 71300C | 2,250 | 14,400 | 1.1 GPM |
| 51300C | 3,000 | 19,200 | 1.5 GPM |
| 51600C | 6,000 | 38,400 | 1.5 GPM |
| FL6 | 6,000 | 38,400 | 1.5 GPM |
| FL10 | 10,000 | 64,000 | 1.5 GPM |
51300C, 51600C or 71300C on an enhanced station
Elkay’s enhanced manuals list all three for the same station. Here’s how they differ.
3,000 gallons, full 1.5 GPM flow and the widest fit. It’s the one most parts lists name first.
Same size and flow, twice the gallons. Elkay calls it the filter for high-traffic areas. Fewer changes on a gym or cafeteria station.
It adds PFOA and PFOS reduction, but it’s rated for 2,250 gallons and flows 1.1 GPM, so bottles fill slower and it runs out sooner. It’s also about 2 in. taller than the 51300C.
My call: on an enhanced station that fills more than about 19,000 bottles a year, the 51600C saves a mid-year change. On a quiet one, the 51300C hits its one-year limit before its gallons anyway, so the bigger filter buys you nothing.
The 71300C’s certification names two PFAS chemicals, PFOA and PFOS. It doesn’t claim every PFAS. If a water test flagged a different one, ask Elkay before you count on this filter for it.
What each filter is certified to reduce
| Filter | Certified to | Reduces, per Elkay’s sheet | Who certified it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 51300C | NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 401 | Lead, microplastics, Class 1 particulate, cysts, chlorine taste and odor | Not named on the sheet |
| 51600C | NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 401 | Same list as the 51300C | Not named on the sheet |
| 71300C | NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 401 | PFOA and PFOS, plus the 51300C’s list | Not named on the sheet |
| FL6, FL10 | NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 401 and 372 | Lead, microplastics, cysts, asbestos, turbidity, Class 1 particulate, chlorine, taste and odor | IAPMO R&T |
NSF/ANSI 42 covers taste, odor and chlorine. Standard 53 covers health claims like lead and cysts, and 401 covers newer contaminants such as microplastics. Every ezH2O cartridge carries all three, so a swap between them changes gallons and flow, not the lead claim.
A spent filter is the catch. Each claim is tied to the filter’s rated gallons, and Elkay says to change it at those gallons or one year, whichever comes first. A cartridge past either limit is running outside what Elkay rates it for, even when the water still tastes fine.
Recall and safe-water checks
CPSC recall 18-085 (Jan 25, 2018) covers about 31,600 Elkay and Halsey Taylor coolers and bottle filling stations, including all EZ and LZ models, with serial numbers starting 1704, 1705 or 1706. Screws holding the grounding wire can break, which is a shock hazard. If yours matches, stop using it, unplug it and contact Elkay for the free repair. Model and serial lookup: checkmycooler.com.
The recall was still listed on the CPSC’s database when I checked on Oct 22, 2026, and no filter cartridge recall came up. A new filter doesn’t fix a recalled unit, so check the serial before you open the cover.
A filter also doesn’t make unsafe water safe. Elkay’s EWF3000 kit instructions say its filters aren’t for water that’s microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality unless the water is disinfected before or after the filter.
Where Elkay’s own instructions disagree
Elkay’s manuals and help pages don’t all say the same thing. Here’s what to do when they differ.
| Question | What the sources say | What I’d do |
|---|---|---|
| Which way to turn it out? | Help article: clockwise. Manuals 2000001214, 2000002265, 1000004543 and 2000000888: counterclockwise. | Follow your station’s manual. Counterclockwise out, clockwise in. |
| How long to flush? | Help article: 3 minutes. Bi-level manual: at least 2 gallons. Maintenance sheet 2000000888: 10 minutes. | Run it until the air is gone and the water is clear, then at least as long as your manual says. |
| Which filter fits? | The 51300C Amazon title says ezH2O bottle fillers. Elkay’s parts lists name the cartridge per station. | Go by the parts list for your full model. |
| How many gallons? | Listing titles give gallons only. | Elkay’s sheets add a one-year limit. Use whichever comes first. |
What to write down at each change
| Write down | Why |
|---|---|
| Station model and serial | Finds the right manual and screens the recall |
| Filter part number | The next person buys the same one |
| Date fitted | Catches the one-year limit |
| Bottle counter reading | Lets you work out gallons used with the checker |
| Any error code | Separates a filter problem from a board problem |
A strip of tape inside the lower cover works. So does the filter label itself, which has a space for the date. On a building with ten stations, a single sheet with all ten lines saves a lot of opening covers to check.
When to call a plumber or Elkay service
Don’t pull a filter on a station you can’t isolate. Get the stop valve repaired first.
Keep people away and have the power cut by someone qualified. A filter swap won’t fix wet wiring.
If the right filter is in the right way and a 30-second power cycle doesn’t clear it, the NFC board needs a service tech.
Reseat the filter once. If the head still drips with a new genuine filter, the head needs service.
Questions people ask
Why is the filter light still on after replacing the filter?
Original ezH2O stations need a manual reset: hold the program button 2 seconds, choose RST FLTR and press until it reads FLTR 0. Enhanced and Pro stations reset themselves, so a light that stays red there usually means the station can’t read the filter. Check for E013 and fit a genuine Elkay filter.
What does E013 mean on an Elkay ezH2O?
Missing or incompatible filter. Make sure the label faces the front and the tag faces the back, then unplug the unit for at least 30 seconds. If it stays, call Elkay support or a certified service tech.
How often do Elkay filters need replacing?
At their rated gallons or one year, whichever comes first. That’s 3,000 gallons for the 51300C, 6,000 for the 51600C and FL6, 2,250 for the 71300C and 10,000 for the FL10.
What does a flashing or solid red light mean?
On Elkay’s current stations, solid red means change the filter now. One blue light, or a yellow light, means change it soon. Liv EZ dispensers pulse red as the filter nears the end of its life.
Can I use a 51600C instead of a 51300C?
Only if your station’s parts list names it. Elkay lists the 51600C for enhanced ezH2O stations. On an original station, set FLT SIZE to 6000GAL if your sheet allows the bigger filter.
Do I have to flush a new Elkay filter?
Yes. The new filter holds air and fine carbon. Run water until it’s clear; Elkay’s instructions range from 3 minutes to 2 gallons to 10 minutes depending on the station.
Does an Elkay bottle filler filter remove lead?
Yes, when it’s in date. The 51300C, 51600C, 71300C, FL6 and FL10 are all certified to NSF/ANSI 53 for lead reduction, up to their rated gallons or one year.
Does an Elkay filter remove PFAS?
Only the 71300C makes a PFAS claim, and it names two: PFOA and PFOS. The 51300C and 51600C don’t claim PFAS reduction. Pro stations add a separate FLP4 PFAS filter.
Where is the reset button on an Elkay bottle filler?
On original ezH2O stations it’s the program button under the top cover, held by two Torx T25 screws. Enhanced and Pro stations have no filter reset button because they reset on their own.
How I put this together
Why trust me
I’m Isaac Daniels, a licensed journeyman plumber in Georgia (license #JP507711). I’ve used every filter listed here. The steps and numbers come from Elkay’s spec sheets, manuals and help articles, read on Oct 22, 2026.
How I pick
- Genuine Elkay cartridges only, matched to the station family Elkay lists them for.
- New and in stock on the day of the update.
- No scores: each cartridge fits a different station, so fit decides, not a ranking. They’re listed as a kit.
- Prices come from Amazon’s API with the time they were read.
