Quick answer
The Cleaner is a weekly foaming packet, dropped in unopened. The Freshener is a daily capsule.

Glisten’s two disposal products, plus Plink
All three come from Summit Brands. They do different jobs on different schedules, so they aren’t scored against each other.

Cleaner, freshener or Plink: which is which
Searches for Glisten disposal cleaner turn up all three. Summit Brands gives each a different job.
| Product | Format | How often (Summit Brands) | What it’s for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glisten Garbage Disposer Cleaner | Unopened foaming packet | Weekly | Deep clean: foam scrubs sidewalls, blades and under the splash guard |
| Glisten Garbage Disposer Freshener | Capsule | Daily or as needed | Freshening between weekly cleans |
| Plink Garbage Disposal Freshener & Cleaner | Capsule with a bleach alternative | Twice a week | Breaking down odor-causing residue and freshening |
Summit Brands makes two Glisten disposal products and a sister brand, Plink, and the names are close enough to mix up in a store aisle.
The Cleaner is the one with foam, and Summit Brands calls it the only disposer deep cleaner with bleach-alternative foaming power. The Freshener is a capsule for daily use, and Summit Brands says to use it between weekly cleans with the Cleaner. Plink is a sister brand: lemon capsules with a bleach alternative, used twice a week.
All three, per Summit Brands, are safe for all disposals, plumbing and septic systems. None of them clears a clog. Summit Brands says Glisten is designed for properly working disposers and won’t clear a clogged drain.
Which routine fits your disposer?
Two questions. The first checks whether a cleaner is the right tool at all.
Use the Glisten Cleaner weekly. One unopened packet, hot water at a pencil-width trickle, run until the foam disappears.
The planner stops you at the two cases where a cleaner is the wrong move. A slow or backed-up drain needs the clog cleared, and a disposer that hums without spinning is usually jammed. Our garbage disposal not working guide covers the jam, and how to unclog a drain covers the clog.
How to use the Glisten cleaner packets
Summit Brands’ steps, in order. Read the label on your package too.
- 1Start with it off and empty
Begin with the disposer turned off and nothing in it.
- 2Run hot water beside it
Run a strong stream of hot water into the disposer side of the sink, but not straight into the disposer, for one minute.
- 3Cut to a trickle
Reduce the hot water to a pencil-width trickle.
- 4Drop in a sealed packet
With the disposer still off and the water at a trickle, push one unopened packet all the way in. Don’t open the packet.
- 5Turn it on
Blue foam may rise into the sink, or both sinks on a double. Cleaning continues as the foam retreats.
- 6Rinse when the foam is gone
Cleaning is done when the foam disappears, about 1 to 2 minutes. Rinse the sink and turn off the disposer.
The trickle is the step people get wrong. Too much water washes the foam down before it can work. Summit Brands says that if you don’t see foam, repeat the steps and make sure the hot water is a pencil-width trickle. I’ve used it.
Summit Brands recommends it weekly to prevent buildup and keep the disposer running well, and lists it as biodegradable. The 4-packet box covers a month; a 16-packet box is also sold.
Where it fits
- Foam reaches the sidewalls, blades and under the splash guard
- Weekly schedule, per Summit Brands
- Safe for septic, per Summit Brands
What to watch
- Needs a pencil-width hot trickle to foam
- Won’t clear a clog
- Don’t open the packet
How to use the Glisten freshener capsules
A capsule for between weekly cleans.
Summit Brands’ directions: run the disposer with a full stream of hot water for one minute to clear food scraps, then turn it off and cut the water to a pencil-width stream. Drop one capsule into the disposer, run it as the package directs, then turn off the disposer and water. To revive the scent later, run the disposer with bursts of hot water. I’ve used it.
Summit Brands says to use it daily or as needed, especially between weekly cleans with the Glisten Cleaner, and that used correctly it won’t clog your sink, because hot water and the disposer break the capsule up. It’s not designed for a clogged drain.
Read your package for the run time. Summit Brands’ web directions for the Freshener list turning the disposer off twice and don’t print a run time, so follow the label on the box you have.
Where it fits
- Quick daily freshen
- Breaks up in hot water, per Summit Brands
- Pairs with the weekly Cleaner
What to watch
- Not a deep clean
- Not for clogged drains
- Check the package for run time
How to use Plink capsules
Summit Brands’ capsule with a bleach alternative, used twice a week.
Plink’s directions are the most specific of the three. Run the disposal with a full stream of water for one minute, turn it off and cut the water to a pencil-width stream, drop in one capsule and run the disposal for 15 seconds, then turn off the disposal and water. Revive the scent with bursts of hot water. I’ve used it.
Summit Brands says Plink capsules use a bleach alternative to help break down odor-causing residue and grime, and recommends use twice a week. Like Glisten, it says Plink is safe for all disposals, plumbing and septic systems.
Pick Plink or the Glisten Freshener for between-clean freshening, not both. The Glisten Cleaner is still the weekly foam deep clean.
Where it fits
- Clear 15 second run time
- Bleach alternative, per Summit Brands
- Twice a week schedule
What to watch
- Not a foaming deep clean
- Not for clogged drains
- Overlaps the Glisten Freshener

The three side by side
Format, schedule and water steps from Summit Brands’ pages.
| Product | Key specs | Schedule | Pick it if | Skip it if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Glisten Disposer Cleaner (4 packets) | Foaming packet, bleach alternative, biodegradable | Weekly | You want a deep clean of blades, walls and splash guard. | The drain is slow or clogged. |
| Glisten Disposer Freshener (10 capsules) | Capsule, breaks up in hot water | Daily or as needed | You want to freshen between weekly cleans. | You already use Plink. |
| Plink Freshener & Cleaner (40 count) | Lemon capsule, bleach alternative, 15 second run | Twice a week | You prefer a capsule with a clear run time. | You already use the Glisten Freshener. |
How long each box lasts on the maker’s schedule
Pack counts from the Amazon listings, divided by Summit Brands’ recommended schedule. Our arithmetic.
| Product and pack | Schedule | Lasts about |
|---|---|---|
| Glisten Disposer Cleaner, 4 packets | Weekly | 4 weeks |
| Glisten Disposer Cleaner, 16 packets | Weekly | 16 weeks |
| Glisten Disposer Freshener, 10 capsules | Daily | 10 days |
| Glisten Disposer Freshener, 30 capsules | Daily | 30 days |
| Plink, 40 capsules | Twice a week | 20 weeks |
The weekly Cleaner is the slowest to use up, which is why a 4-pack is a fair way to try it and a 16-pack makes sense once it’s a habit. The daily Freshener goes fastest. If you only want a freshener a few times a week, Plink’s twice-a-week schedule stretches a box much further.
Store the boxes dry and closed. Packets and capsules are made to break apart in water, and a damp cabinet under the sink, next to a slow drip from a trap or supply line, can start that early.
What the foam and capsules actually do
Summit Brands’ own description of each product, in plain terms.
The Glisten Cleaner works by foam. Summit Brands says the foam scrubs the disposer’s sidewalls, the blades and the underside of the splash guard, the rubber flaps at the top, which are places running water alone tends to miss. It says the foam uses a bleach alternative and carries Plink’s lemon scent, and that the packets are biodegradable.
The Freshener and Plink work by dissolving. Summit Brands says hot water and the disposer break the capsule up so it reaches into crevices and rinses away odors. Plink adds a bleach alternative to help break down odor-causing residue. Neither foams, and neither is meant as the weekly deep clean.
Summit Brands also says the Glisten products are made with natural ingredients and without harsh chemicals. That’s the maker’s description; the Safety Data Sheets linked from each product page list the actual ingredients and handling notes.
No foam, still smells, or still slow
What Summit Brands says, and what to check under the sink.
Summit Brands says to repeat the steps and make sure the hot water is a pencil-width trickle. Too much water carries the foam away.
The smell may be coming from the drain past the disposer, or from the dishwasher hose. Our disposal smells guide walks through the sources.
Summit Brands says Glisten won’t clear a clogged drain. Clear the clog before using any cleaner.
The disposer is jammed or failing. Switch off the power before checking it.
Smells that come back quickly may not be the disposer at all. A trap that’s holding debris, a dishwasher drain loop that lets dirty water sit, or a vent problem can all smell like the disposer. Our garbage disposal smells guide sorts them out, and our Lemi Shine disposal cleaner guide covers another brand’s pods.
Handling disposal cleaners safely
Common sense, plus what Summit Brands puts on its pages.
Summit Brands tells you to read the entire label before using each product, and links Safety Data Sheets from each product page. Keep packets and capsules where children and pets can’t reach them; they look like candy to a toddler.
Never reach into a disposer. If something needs fishing out, switch off the power at the wall switch and the breaker, and use tongs. Don’t mix a disposal cleaner with drain openers or bleach in the same drain.
