How long a rain chain you need
Measure from the bottom of the gutter to the ground, then tell the planner where the chain will end. It builds the length from 8.5 ft chains and Monarch’s 3 ft extensions.
Every pick here ships at 8.5 ft. Good Directions calls 8.5 ft the right size for a single-story home and says its chains link together for taller walls.
Monarch sells a 3 ft extension for its Lotus chains; it hooks to the bottom of the 8.5 ft chain, so an 11.5 ft drop is one chain plus one extension.

You want the shiny new-penny look. Pick the Monarch copper Lotus or Good Directions’ plain copper version.
The Crocus is the rain chain I’d hang first, and I’ve used it. It scored 10.0, tied for the top.
Good Directions says it’s handmade from 20 gauge pure copper with a hand-rubbed blue verde finish, the green-blue look of copper that’s weathered for years. You get that look on day one instead of waiting for it.
The cups are wide crocus shapes linked into an 8-1/2 ft chain. Good Directions’ product page lists the cups at 3-1/4 in. wide by 3 in. high, while the Amazon listing says 3 in. wide. They’re actually the smallest cups of the four picks, though the maker says its cups are the largest in the industry. I can’t check that claim, so treat it as theirs.
Installation needs only a screwdriver, per the maker, and a gutter installation clip comes in the box. It holds the top link across the outlet hole where the downspout used to attach.
Good Directions backs its rain chains with a lifetime warranty, and it’s the only one of the two brands here that publishes one. It says you can contact its staff directly if there’s a problem. The company says it’s family owned and based in Connecticut since 1982.
If your gutter is higher than about 9 ft, Good Directions says its chains connect to reach any length. It also sells a matching blue verde basin (479V1) and a rain chain anchor (496P) to stop the chain swinging in wind.
The Amazon listing for this model was sold by Amazon.com on Oct 23, 2026. The maker’s page carries a California Proposition 65 notice for this chain.
The same Crocus design comes in other finishes in Good Directions’ catalog: plain pure copper (491P-8) that starts bright, and black aluminum (491K-8), listed with its gutter installation clip. Pick the verde version if you want the aged look without waiting years for it.

You like a simple, clean line. The Crocus has six cups and reads quieter on a wall.
The Tulip is the Crocus’s heavy-rain sibling, and I’ve used it. It also scored 10.0.
Good Directions’ page describes thirteen 4.25 in. wide flower ornaments forming an 8.5 ft chain and says the large cups can easily handle heavy rainfall. The Amazon listing says 13 cups at 4 in. wide and 3-1/2 in. high. That depth is the most of the four picks: Monarch’s Lotus cups are 2-1/4 in. high and the Crocus cups 3 in.
The listing gives the metal as 20 gauge pure copper with the same hand-rubbed blue verde finish as the Crocus. One caution: the maker’s web page for this chain repeats a line from its aluminum chains and a cup size from the Crocus. I went by the model-specific numbers and the listing, and I’d trust the box label over either.
A gutter installation clip is included, and Good Directions says a screwdriver is the only tool you need. The same lifetime warranty applies.
Because the cups are larger, the chain is heavier and catches more wind. I’d pair it with Good Directions’ rain chain anchor or a basin so it hangs straight in a storm.
Like the Crocus, it connects to more chains for a taller drop, and it was sold by Amazon.com when I checked on Oct 23, 2026.
If you’re choosing between the two Good Directions chains, the deeper Tulip cups suit a corner that takes a lot of roof; the Crocus suits everywhere else.
Good Directions’ copper gutter clip funnel (495P) works with this chain too. The maker lists it at 2-5/8 in. wide by 4-1/4 in. long by 3 in. high, with an extra 3.2 by 4.5 in. plate for larger gutters, and says it fits all rain chains and carries the same lifetime warranty.
Best for bright copper that ages
Monarch copper Lotus
Monarch Rain Chains pure copper Lotus cup rain chain, 8.5 ft
You want bright new copper that darkens over time, and you may need a 3 ft extension.
Skip it if
A written warranty matters to you. Monarch doesn’t publish one that I could find; Good Directions does.
The Monarch copper Lotus is the pick for real bare copper, and I’ve used it. It scored 8.6.
Monarch’s page says it’s 18 lotus-shaped cups in heavy-duty 23 gauge copper, assembled into an 8.5 ft chain. Each cup has a wide, flared mouth to catch water, and Monarch says the copper will patina over time. Bare copper outdoors typically darkens to brown first and can turn green over years.
It arrives assembled and ready to hang on a fixed triangular gutter hanger, per Monarch. You don’t need a separate clip to get started, although Monarch also sells copper gutter adapters that reduce splashing at the outlet.
Monarch makes a 3 ft extension that hooks onto the bottom of the 8.5 ft chain. That’s handy when your gutter is 10 or 11 ft up and a second full chain would pile up on the ground.
It lost points on one check: I couldn’t find a written warranty on Monarch’s site. Its refund policy page loads, but no warranty term for the chain. Good Directions publishes a lifetime warranty, so it scores higher.
The gauge number runs backward: 23 gauge is thinner than 20 gauge. That doesn’t make the Monarch flimsy, but the Good Directions chains use the heavier sheet.
Monarch also sells a hammered copper basin and anchoring stakes for this line. On Oct 23, 2026 the Amazon listing was sold by Monarch Abode, the maker’s own store.
Monarch’s own copper gutter adapter is a two-piece fitting with a brass bolt. Monarch says it fits most gutters, includes an extra copper plate for larger ones and needs no tools. Monarch also notes a rain chain hangs straight down, so it suits corners next to porches, patios and awnings where a downspout elbow would be in the way.

You want copper. The same Lotus shape comes in pure copper from Monarch.
The aluminum Lotus is for black gutters and modern trim, and I’ve used it. It scored 7.1, the lowest pick that still clears our 7.0 bar.
Monarch’s page lists it as 18 lotus-shaped cups in heavy 18 gauge aluminum with a black powder coat, assembled into an 8.5 ft chain. The Amazon listing says 8 large cups. That’s a big difference, so count the cups in the listing photos or ask the seller before you order if cup count matters to you.
Aluminum won’t patina the way copper does. The black stays black, which is the point if your house has dark gutters, window frames or railings.
It hangs on the same fixed triangular hanger as the copper version, and Monarch’s 3 ft extension fits the line. Monarch also sells a black aluminum gutter adapter and black anchoring stakes.
It scored lower for two reasons. It isn’t copper, which our score counts, and I couldn’t find a written warranty from Monarch.
Aluminum is lighter than copper sheet of the same size, which helps on a thin vinyl gutter. That’s a general property of the metal, not a Monarch figure.
The listing was sold by Monarch Abode on Oct 23, 2026.
Monarch says the chain carries rainwater down its full length to the ground, where you can store it in a container for reuse. For a matching install, Monarch sells a black two-piece aluminum gutter adapter with a brass bolt (20042), black anchoring stakes (15005) and a 12 in. black powder-coated steel basin (29124).
Monarch describes that basin as hand-hammered mild steel, 3 in. high and 12 in. across, with two washers for adjusting the water flow and a 12 in. adjustable stainless steel link chain to tie the rain chain down. It can hold rainwater to reuse in the garden, per Monarch.
Monarch’s listing gives the Lotus cup as 4.5 in. across and 2.25 in. tall, with a 0.75 in. opening at the bottom, on an 8.5 ft chain. Photo: Amazon listing (Monarch Abode).

Marrgon copper cup rain chains
5.7. Marrgon publishes no gauge or cup size and I found no written warranty, so it misses three checks.

I picked only cup chains because they do the job better in the rain most of us get. Good Directions says its wide cups promote water flow, and Monarch says its flared cups capture most of the rainwater. Link chains have no cups to hold the water, so more of it can fly off in a downpour.
No rain chain maker I checked publishes a flow rating in gallons a minute, so no one can tell you exactly how much water a chain can carry. Cup size and depth are the best clue you have; the Tulip’s 3-1/2 in. deep cups are the deepest here.

Copper is the classic rain chain metal, and both copper picks will change color outdoors. If you want that weathered green look now, Good Directions’ blue verde finish starts there. If you want the color to stay put, aluminum is the honest choice.
Gauge is a sheet thickness number where smaller is thicker. Good Directions’ 20 gauge copper is heavier than Monarch’s 23 gauge copper.
Where the water should go at the bottom
A rain chain still drains a whole section of roof. The bottom end matters as much as the chain.

Discharge distance on problem soils
Roof water discharged at least 5 ft from foundation walls, or to an approved drainage system, where expansive or collapsible soils are known
IRC 2021 R801.3

Ground falls at least 6 in. in the first 10 ft
IRC 2021 R401.3

IRC 2021 R401.3

Good Directions, Monarch
Rain barrel
Stores the water for the garden
Monarch lists a catchment system as an end point
Drain or dry well
Carries water away underground
Monarch lists a drain as an end point
Monarch says its chains should end at a drain, a rain catchment system, a basin or another option that moves water safely away from the foundation. That matches what the building code asks for: water shouldn’t pool against the house. Your local code and soil decide which of these rules applies to you, so check with your building department if you’re unsure.
If the ground near the chain is flat or slopes toward the house, a basin alone won’t fix it. Grade the soil away first, or carry the water off with a drain; French drain pipe and catch basins cover the buried options.
How to hang a rain chain
1
Take off the downspout
Remove the downspout and its elbow at the gutter outlet. Leave the outlet hole open.
2
Fit the hanger or clip
Good Directions includes a clip that spans the outlet; Monarch chains come with a fixed triangular hanger.
3
Hang the chain
Hook the top link to the hanger so the chain drops through the center of the outlet.
4
Add an adapter if it splashes
Both makers sell a gutter adapter or funnel that guides water onto the chain and cuts splash at the top.
5
Anchor the bottom
Set a basin or stake so the chain hangs straight and can’t swing into the wall.
6
Check the ground
Make sure water from the basin flows away from the house, not back toward it.
Good Directions says a screwdriver is the only tool needed. If your gutter outlet is much larger than a standard downspout hole, Good Directions’ funnel adaptor (495P) comes with an extra copper plate for bigger gutters, per the maker.
Rain chain or downspout: an honest look
Question

Best spots
Porches, patios, entries, low roof areas
Large roof areas and tight walls
A rain chain is a decorative downspout. It’s great at an entry, a porch corner or a small roof section, and fine on most single-story corners. On a big roof area feeding one outlet, a closed downspout keeps more water contained. If you’re running water into a buried pipe, a downspout with a proper adapter is the cleaner connection.
Care, patina and cold weather
Let copper age
Both makers say copper patinas over time. Leave it alone unless you want to keep it bright.
Clear the gutter, not the chain
Leaves collect in the gutter at the outlet. Keep that area clear so water reaches the chain.
Ice in freezing weather
Water freezing on the cups adds weight. Neither maker publishes a load rating, so check the hanger after an ice storm.
Wind
An unanchored chain swings. Good Directions sells an anchor for that reason; a basin or stake does the same job.

Pick
Do you want a written warranty?
Only Good Directions publishes one here (lifetime)

Then measure the drop and use the planner above. Order the basin or anchor at the same time; a chain without a proper end point just moves the puddle from the downspout to a new spot.
Questions people ask
What is the best rain chain?
On our spec score, the Good Directions Crocus and Tulip (both 10.0), then the Monarch copper Lotus (8.6).
Do rain chains work as well as downspouts?
They move water, but they don’t contain it as fully as a closed downspout. Cup chains splash less than link chains.
How long should a rain chain be?
About the distance from the gutter bottom to where it ends. Single-story homes usually need one 8.5 ft chain.
Can I connect two rain chains?
Yes. Good Directions says its chains connect for any length; Monarch sells a 3 ft extension.
What goes at the bottom of a rain chain?
A basin, a stake in gravel, a drain or a rain barrel. Water should move away from the foundation.
Is copper or aluminum better for a rain chain?
Copper patinas and is heavier; aluminum keeps its powder-coat color. Pick by the look you want.
Do rain chains need a gutter adapter?
Good Directions includes a clip and Monarch includes a hanger. An adapter or funnel helps cut splash at the top.
How far from the house should rain water go?
IRC R801.3 says at least 5 ft from foundation walls where expansive or collapsible soils exist.
Do rain chains freeze?
Water can freeze on the cups in cold weather, adding weight. Check the hanger after an ice storm.
What does gauge mean on a rain chain?
Sheet thickness; a smaller number is thicker. 20 gauge copper is heavier than 23 gauge.
How I picked these
Why trust me
I’m Isaac Daniels, a licensed journeyman plumber in Georgia (license #JP507711), and I’ve used all four picks. Every figure comes from Good Directions’ and Monarch’s product pages and their Amazon listings, read Oct 23, 2026, plus the 2021 International Residential Code for drainage rules.
