Best Trench Drain (2026)

The best trench drain for most driveways and garage approaches is the NDS 864 Pro Series 5 in channel drain kit: a 5-1/2 in wide deep channel with grates, an end cap and an outlet for 3 in pipe or 4 in fittings. For long patio or pool deck runs, buy the NDS Spee-D 400-10WH 10 ft assembly. For heavier traffic and built-in slope, step up to the NDS Dura Slope system, starting with the DS-091NDIKIT. The NDS 764 3 in kit suits a walkway or doorway.

A trench drain catches sheet flow on a hard surface. It is not a French drain, which collects groundwater in gravel. If your problem is a wet basement or soggy yard, read sump pump vs French drain first.

BEST OVERALL · 5 IN DEEP PROFILE · 3 IN OUTLET

NDS 864 Pro Series 5 in kit: the right size for most driveways

Choose it when water runs down the driveway into the garage, or pools at the bottom of a slab. NDS lists the 864 kit (adspipe.com) as a 5-1/2 x 39-3/8 in deep profile channel with gray plastic grates, an end cap and an end cap with outlet. That outlet connects to 3 in pipe or 4 in fittings.

The 5 in Pro Series page (adspipe.com) lists the deep channel at 4-3/4 in deep, moving 193.0 GPM at a 1% slope. The plastic grates are rated for cars, light trucks and medium-duty pneumatic tires up to 175 psi at under 20 mph. For longer runs, NDS also sells packs, such as the 864GMTL-3PK (9.8 ft total, galvanized steel grates) and the 864G-6PK (19.7 ft total).

Skip it if heavy trucks, a loaded trailer or a skid steer cross the drain. Swap in the ductile iron 823 grate below, or use Dura Slope with its iron frame.

BEST LONG RUN · 10 FT SECTIONS

NDS Spee-D 400-10WH: fewer joints across a patio or pool deck

Choose it when the drain runs along a patio edge, a pool deck or the front of a long garage. NDS sells the Spee-D 400-10WH (adspipe.com) as a 10 ft assembly with gray plastic grates already fastened on. The channel is 4-3/4 in wide and 3-3/4 in tall, moves 94.3 GPM at a 1% slope, and can be cut to length. The plastic grates carry the same 175 psi vehicle rating as the Pro Series.

The assembly does not include an outlet. Pick one from the outlet list below to match your pipe, and close the other end with the 247 end cap. NDS also sells elbows, tees and crosses with grates to turn corners.

Skip it if the channel must carry a big flow from a steep driveway. The deeper 5 in Pro Series moves about twice the water per NDS figures.

Buy the 400-10WH from an NDS dealer or a landscape supply house; we found no in-stock new Amazon listing on October 14, 2026.

BEST HEAVY DUTY · 6 IN · 4 IN OUTLET

NDS Dura Slope DS-091NDIKIT: pre-sloped, heavier-duty system

Choose it when you have a long run, want the slope built into the channel, or expect more than car traffic. NDS lists the DS-091NDIKIT (adspipe.com) as a 6 in wide x 4 ft long neutral channel, 4.3 in invert depth and 6.1 in deep, with ductile iron grates, an end outlet and an end cap.

The Dura Slope line is a numbered set. Each sloped 4 ft section has 0.7% slope built in, about 0.34 in of fall per section, and the numbers step up in depth (DS-091, DS-092 and on). Neutral sections, with an N suffix, have flat bottoms and let you hold a depth. The DS-227 end outlet (adspipe.com) connects to 4 in sewer and drain pipe.

NDS rates the channel and standard grates at 61 to 175 psi, and 326 to 575 psi (H-20) with the DS-200 ductile iron frame and DS-225 screws. NDS says Dura Slope was tested to AASHTO M-306 and EN 1433.

Skip it if you only need a short run at a garage door. A single 864 kit is simpler, and Dura Slope needs a parts list laid out in order.

Buy the DS-091NDIKIT from an NDS dealer or a landscape supply house; we found no in-stock new Amazon listing on October 14, 2026.

BEST SMALL KIT · 3 IN · WALKWAYS

NDS 764 Pro Series 3 in kit: a short drain at a door or walk

Choose it when you need to stop water at a patio door, a walkway low spot or the edge of a shed slab. NDS lists the 764 kit (adspipe.com) with a 4-1/16 x 39-3/8 in channel, two gray plastic grates, an end cap and an end cap with outlet that connects to 3 in drain fittings. NDS gives 97.8 GPM at a 1% slope for the channel.

The plastic grate carries the same 175 psi vehicle rating, so a car rolling over a walkway drain is fine. Set the grate a hair below the finished surface so it does not catch a toe or a shovel.

Skip it if the drain crosses a full driveway. Use the 5 in kit for the extra flow and depth.

Buy the 764 from an NDS dealer or a landscape supply house; we found no in-stock new Amazon listing on October 14, 2026.

GRATE UPGRADE · 575 PSI · DUCTILE IRON

NDS 823: a ductile iron grate for the 5 in Pro Series

Choose it when the 864 channel sits where heavy vehicles cross. NDS lists the 823 grate (adspipe.com) at 5-1/4 x 19-11/16 in in ductile iron, rated for heavy-duty hard-tire forklifts up to 575 psi at under 20 mph. Two grates cover one 39-3/8 in channel. For a middle step, the 828 Load Star nylon grate is rated to 325 psi.

Skip it if only cars and bikes cross the drain. The plastic grates in the kit are rated for that, and they will not rust.

Buy the 823 from an NDS dealer or a landscape supply house; we found no in-stock new Amazon listing on October 14, 2026. If you want metal grates and would rather order from Amazon, the NDS 864GMTL is the same 5 in deep channel kit sold with galvanized steel grates instead of plastic. It is not the 575 psi ductile iron upgrade, so check the steel grate’s load rating with NDS before heavy vehicles cross it. For forklifts and heavy trucks, use the 823.

Width, flow and load class

Three numbers decide which trench drain to buy.

  1. Width. Wider channels catch more water and hold more depth. For homes, 3 to 6 in covers almost every job. Walkways and doors take 3 in. Driveways and garages take 4-3/4 to 6 in.
  2. Flow. NDS publishes channel flow in gallons per minute at a 1% slope. Bigger, steeper hard surfaces shed more water. When in doubt, go deeper or add a second outlet.
  3. Load. NDS rates grates in psi and by traffic type, and its Pro Series line (adspipe.com) is rated up to NDS Class C with the right grate. The table below gives each grate’s rating.

Outlets and pipe: 3 in or 4 in

The outlet is where most installs go wrong. Match the outlet to the pipe before you dig.

  • NDS 864: the end cap with outlet connects to 3 in pipe or 4 in fittings.
  • NDS 764: connects to 3 in drain fittings.
  • Spee-D: the 249 offset end outlet takes 3 in drain pipe or 4 in fittings, the 2350 bottom outlet takes 3 in and 4 in fittings, and the 246 end outlet takes 2 in fittings.
  • Dura Slope: the DS-227 end outlet takes 4 in sewer and drain pipe, and the DS-126 adapter gives a bottom outlet.

Use solid pipe from the outlet to the discharge point, not perforated pipe. Give it steady downhill fall the whole way, with no bellies where silt can settle. Glue joints made of PVC or ABS the same way you would a drain line; our PVC vs ABS guide covers which cement goes with which pipe. Put a cleanout where the line changes direction if the run is long.

Catch basins and where the water goes

The water has to end up somewhere legal and downhill. Common choices are daylight on a lower part of the lot, a dry well, a rain garden or a storm drain connection.

A catch basin between the trench drain and the pipe traps grit and leaves before they reach the line. NDS sells a DS-340 inline catch basin kit (adspipe.com) for Dura Slope. For the other systems, run the channel outlet into the side of a catch basin, then out the basin’s outlet to the pipe. Clean the basin sump after storms. A wet/dry shop vac makes that quick.

Check before you connect: do not tie surface water into the house sewer, a floor drain or a septic system unless your building department says you may. Connections to a street storm drain, a curb or the public right-of-way usually need a permit. Call your local building or public works office first, and call 811 before you dig.

Install basics

  1. Mark the run. Find the outlet end at the low point and make sure the pipe can fall from there to the discharge point.
  2. Lay out the parts in order: end cap, channels, any elbows, and the outlet section.
  3. Dig the trench wide and deep enough for the channel plus the bedding the maker calls for on its install guide.
  4. Cut and glue the outlet pipe. Dry-fit the channels and the outlet.
  5. Set the channels to string lines. Use stakes or the maker’s install stakes to hold them while you pour. Keep the grates in place so the channel does not squeeze in.
  6. Pour the concrete or set the pavers around the channel. Keep the grate top a hair below the finished surface so water falls in and tires do not hit the edge.
  7. Test with a hose before you backfill the pipe trench.

For a garage slab cut, a cracked driveway, or a tie-in to a storm sewer, hire a concrete contractor or licensed plumber.

Trench drain FAQ

What is the difference between a trench drain and a channel drain?

For homeowners, nothing. Both mean a long, narrow channel set in the ground with a grate on top. Makers like NDS call them channel drains. Contractors often say trench drain, especially for wider or heavier systems.

What size trench drain do I need for a driveway?

Most residential driveway channels, including the ones here, are 4 to 6 inches wide. The NDS 864 is 5-1/2 inches wide and moves 193 GPM at a 1 percent slope, per NDS. Size up for a long, steep driveway that sheds a lot of water.

Can you drive over a trench drain?

Yes, if the grate is rated for it. NDS rates its plastic grates for cars, light trucks and medium-duty pneumatic tires up to 175 psi at under 20 mph. For heavier loads, use a ductile or cast iron grate such as the NDS 823.

Where should a trench drain drain to?

To a place your local rules allow, such as daylight downhill, a dry well, a catch basin or a storm drain. Do not tie it into the house sewer or a floor drain unless your building department says you may.

Does a trench drain need to be sloped?

The water has to run downhill to the outlet. You can slope the channel itself, use a pre-sloped system like NDS Dura Slope, or keep the channel level and add more outlets. The outlet pipe must also run downhill with no sags.

How deep should a trench drain be?

Deep enough to hold the channel, its concrete or base around it, and the outlet pipe at the right fall. The NDS 864 deep profile channel is 4-3/4 inches deep. Follow the maker’s installation guide for the bedding under and beside it.

How we chose

This is a document-based comparison from a licensed plumber’s point of view. We read the NDS (now part of ADS) product pages for each exact kit, channel, grate and outlet, and picked systems that publish their width, flow, load rating and outlet pipe size. We stuck with one maker so the parts in each pick are known to fit together. Sources were read October 14, 2026; sellers and availability change. We do not publish prices and did not test these drains ourselves. More about our selection method and Plumbing Picks.
