Best Dishwasher Drain Hose (2026)

For most kitchens, the best dishwasher drain hose is the Whirlpool W11414944, a 6 ft universal hose that Whirlpool says you can trim at the sink end to fit. If your old hose is fine but too short, add the Whirlpool 8269144A 6 ft extension, or the Whirlpool 3385556 12 ft extension for a dishwasher far from the sink. Bosch owners should use the Bosch SGZ1010UC extension kit, part 11030046.

A new hose fixes a cracked, kinked or chewed hose. It will not fix a clogged filter, a failed pump or a plugged sink drain. If water is standing in the tub, work through our dishwasher not draining checklist before you buy parts.

BEST UNIVERSAL REPLACEMENT · 6 FT

Whirlpool W11414944: a full new hose, trimmed to fit

Choose it when the hose on your dishwasher is cracked, split at a clamp, flattened, or so stiff it will not hold a loop. Whirlpool calls it a universal accessory compatible with several brands (whirlpool.com). It is 6 ft long, and Whirlpool tells you to make sure the sink end is the right size and cut it to fit before you attach it.

Six feet is enough for a dishwasher next to the sink base, which is the most common layout. Whirlpool rates the install as a basic hand-tool job that needs some disassembly. Kill the power and shut the water before you start.

Skip it if your dishwasher uses a hose that is molded into the pump or sump, as some units do. In that case buy the OEM hose by your model number from the dishwasher maker.

BEST 6 FT EXTENSION · TALL TUB UNITS

Whirlpool 8269144A: add 6 feet without pulling the dishwasher apart

Choose it when the old hose is sound but will not reach, for example after moving the dishwasher one cabinet over. Whirlpool sells the 8269144A as a 6 ft corrugated plastic extension (whirlpool.com) for tall tub models or installs farther than standard from the drain, and says it fits most dishwasher brands and models. It replaces 1489097 and 8269144.

Put the splice where you can see it under the sink, not behind the dishwasher. A joint you can see is a joint you can check.

Skip it if the original hose is brittle or kinked. Extending a bad hose just adds a second weak spot. Replace the whole hose instead.

BEST LONG RUN · 12 FT

Whirlpool 3385556: for an island or a dishwasher far from the sink

Choose it when the dishwasher sits well away from the sink drain. KitchenAid lists the 3385556 as a 12 ft tall tub drain hose extension (kitchenaid.com) in white corrugated plastic. It replaces WP3385556 and W10883343, among others, and KitchenAid says to check your model number for fit.

Long runs need support. Secure the hose so it cannot sag into a trap of its own on the cabinet floor, and still bring it up to a high loop or air gap at the sink.

Skip it if your manual sets a shorter maximum drain hose length than your run needs. That is a sign to rethink the layout, not to push the pump harder. Ask a plumber about a closer drain connection.

Buy the 3385556 from a Whirlpool or KitchenAid parts dealer; we found no in-stock new Whirlpool listing on Amazon on October 14, 2026.

BEST FOR BOSCH · EXTENSION KIT

Bosch SGZ1010UC: the factory kit for Bosch dishwashers

Choose it when you own a Bosch and need more reach. Bosch’s accessory page (bosch-home.com) says the kit (part 11030046, replacing 00663105) extends the drain hose by up to 6.4 feet. The SGZ1010UC spec sheet (media3.bosch-home.com) lists a maximum length of 6 ft 3/4 in. Plan on about six feet of total reach and you will not be caught short.

Bosch says to check compatibility with your appliance first, and its site has a model-number lookup for that. On Amazon, the in-stock listing is sold under the kit’s part number, 11030046.

Skip it if you own a different brand. Use the Whirlpool extensions above, or your own maker’s kit.

Universal vs OEM dishwasher drain hose

A universal hose is a plain corrugated hose with cuffs at each end. It works when your dishwasher has a simple barbed or spigot outlet at the pump and the hose is held on with a clamp. That covers a lot of dishwashers.

An OEM hose is the exact part listed in your dishwasher’s parts diagram. Buy OEM when the hose has a molded elbow, a check valve, a special clip at the pump, or is part of a sump assembly. Your model number is on a label on the tub edge or door frame. Look it up on the maker’s parts site and match the part number.

  • Universal fits when the pump end is a plain round outlet and the old hose slides off once the clamp is loose.
  • OEM fits when the old hose has a shaped fitting, a clip you have to squeeze, or a part number printed on it.
  • Either way, carry the old hose to the store or keep it on the bench while you compare.

Length and fit: what to measure

Measure before you order. Three numbers matter.

  1. Run length. Measure from the pump outlet, under the dishwasher, through the cabinet hole, up to the top of the loop, and down to the tailpiece or disposal. Add a foot so the hose never has to stretch.
  2. Pump end size. Measure the outside of the pump outlet, or the inside of the old hose cuff. The Whirlpool pages here do not list end sizes, so compare the old hose and check your model on the maker’s site.
  3. Sink end size. Measure the outside of the tailpiece or disposal inlet. Universal hoses often have stepped cuffs that you trim at the size you need. Cut square and clamp past the step.

Keep the run as short as you can. Every extra foot is more hose to kink and more water for the pump to lift. Do not use a washing machine hose or garden hose as a substitute.

High loop or air gap

Every dishwasher drain needs protection against dirty sink water flowing back into the tub. You do it with a high loop, an air gap, or both. A high loop is the hose fastened up high under the countertop before it drops to the drain. An air gap is a fitting on the sink deck with a physical break between the two hoses.

Which one is allowed is a local code question. Many areas accept a high loop. Some require an air gap. We cover the rules and the install details in dishwasher air gap vs high loop. If you use an air gap, you need two hose runs: dishwasher to air gap, and air gap to drain.

Connecting at the sink: tailpiece or disposal

Tailpiece. With no disposal, the hose goes to a dishwasher branch tailpiece. That is a sink tailpiece with a small side inlet, installed above the trap. Clamp the hose to the inlet with the cuff fully on. If your trap and tailpiece are old or mismatched, it is a good time to replace them; see our P-trap replacement guide.

Disposal. Most disposals have a dishwasher inlet on the side. On a new disposal, a knockout plug blocks that inlet. Knock it out from inside the disposal and remove the loose plug before you connect the hose. A left-in plug is the most common reason a dishwasher will not drain after a new disposal goes in.

Use a stainless worm clamp or the spring clamp that came with the hose. Snug is enough. Overtightening can split a plastic inlet.

How to replace a dishwasher drain hose

  1. Turn off the dishwasher circuit at the breaker and shut the water valve under the sink.
  2. Remove the toe kick and the screws that hold the dishwasher to the counter or cabinet sides. Slide the unit out a few inches.
  3. Put towels down. Loosen the clamp at the pump and pull the old hose. Some water will come out.
  4. Pull the old hose through the cabinet hole and loosen it at the tailpiece or disposal.
  5. Feed the new hose through the cabinet hole first, then connect it at the pump and clamp it.
  6. Route it up to the high loop or air gap, then down to the drain. Trim the sink end to fit, and clamp it.
  7. Slide the dishwasher back in without pinching the hose or the supply line. Our supply line and elbow size guide helps if that line needs replacing too.
  8. Restore water and power. Run a short cycle and watch both clamps with a flashlight.

Call a licensed plumber if the sink drain itself backs up, if you need a new drain connection or an air gap hole cut in stone, or if local rules require a permit for the work. Call an appliance tech if the pump hums but moves no water.

Dishwasher drain hose FAQ

Is a dishwasher drain hose universal?

Many are sold as universal, including the Whirlpool W11414944, but the maker still tells you to check your model number. The dishwasher end must fit the pump outlet, and the sink end may need trimming to fit your tailpiece or disposal inlet.

How long can a dishwasher drain hose be?

Keep it as short as the layout allows. Use the length your dishwasher’s installation manual allows, and use a maker extension kit rather than a homemade splice. Bosch’s SGZ1010UC spec sheet, for example, lists a 6 ft 3/4 in maximum hose length with the kit.

Can I extend a dishwasher drain hose?

Yes, with a kit made for it, such as the Whirlpool 8269144A (6 ft) or 3385556 (12 ft), or the Bosch SGZ1010UC for Bosch units. Use the kit’s coupler and clamps, keep every joint where you can reach it, and run it with no kinks or sags on the floor.

Does a dishwasher drain hose need a high loop?

It needs either a high loop or an air gap, and your local code decides which. The loop keeps dirty sink water from flowing back into the dishwasher. Many areas accept a high loop. Some require an air gap at the sink.

Where does the dishwasher drain hose connect?

It connects to a dishwasher branch tailpiece above the sink trap or to the dishwasher inlet on a garbage disposal. On a new disposal, the knockout plug inside that inlet must be removed first or the dishwasher will not drain.

Why is my dishwasher drain hose full of water?

A little water in the hose is normal. A full hose with standing water in the tub points to a kink, a clog, a missing high loop, or a sink drain that is backing up. Clear the sink drain first, then check the hose.

How we chose

This is a document-based comparison from a licensed plumber’s point of view. We read the maker product pages and spec sheets for the exact hoses and kits named here, and favored parts sold by the dishwasher makers themselves over unbranded hoses with no published fit information. Sources were read October 14, 2026; sellers and availability change, and two of the maker pages showed parts as temporarily out of stock. We do not publish prices and did not test these parts ourselves. More about our selection method and Plumbing Picks.
