Dishwasher Air Gap vs High Loop: What Code Actually Requires

⚠️ First: two different “air gaps” get confused constantly

This is the reason most advice on this topic is muddled, and getting it straight makes the rest simple.

1. The water supply air gap — already inside your dishwasher. The residential code language reads: “The water supply to a dishwasher shall be protected against backflow by an air gap complying with ASME A112.1.2 or A112.1.3 that is installed integrally within the machine or a backflow preventer in accordance with Section P2902.”

Read that carefully: installed integrally within the machine. That protection stops dirty water being drawn back into your drinking water supply, and every modern dishwasher has it built in. You do not buy it, fit it, or think about it.

2. The drain-side air gap — the chrome cylinder on the sink deck. This is the one people mean colloquially, and it is a different device solving a different problem: stopping dirty sink or disposal water siphoning back into the dishwasher.

When someone says “you don’t need an air gap, modern dishwashers have one built in,” they are mixing these up. The built-in one is on the supply. It has nothing to do with the drain hose.

What the code actually says about the drain

Two requirements, both quoted from the residential code text as adopted:

Where the drain may connect: “The waste connection of a dishwasher shall connect directly to a wye branch fitting on the tailpiece of the kitchen sink, directly to the dishwasher connection of a food waste disposer, or through an air break to a standpipe.” That last option has dimensional rules of its own — see standpipe height requirements.

And the high loop, in the code’s own words: the waste line must “rise and be securely fastened to the underside of the sink rim or countertop.”

That sentence is the high loop. It is not a workaround or a lesser alternative — in IRC-family jurisdictions it is the requirement. Note the two verbs: rise and be securely fastened. A hose that merely loops upward and flops back down under its own weight does not satisfy it. It has to be strapped up and stay there.

Where a deck-mounted air gap is required

Some jurisdictions — those on the Uniform Plumbing Code, with California the most-cited example — require the separate deck-mounted air gap and will not accept a high loop on its own. This is widely reported by plumbing contractors and inspectors.

The lists that circulate vary between sources, and a stale list is actively harmful here — it either sends you buying a fitting you do not need or fails your inspection. If you are in California, assume you need the air gap and confirm. Anywhere else, one call to the building department settles it.

The practical rule that is safe everywhere: do the high loop always. Add the deck air gap where it is required. The high loop costs nothing and never hurts, even alongside an air gap.

Why the high loop works

Water does not flow uphill without help. Routing the hose up to the underside of the counter puts a physical high point between the sink drain and the dishwasher tub, so when the sink backs up or the disposal churns, that dirty water has nowhere to siphon to. It reaches the top of the loop and stops.

Its virtue is that there is nothing to maintain and nothing to fail. No moving parts, no orifice to block, no cap to come loose. If it is strapped up properly on day one, it works for the life of the appliance.

The air gap’s real drawback: it clogs, and it does it messily

The deck-mounted air gap is a small chamber with an inlet from the dishwasher and an outlet to the disposal or drain. Debris — most often shredded food from a disposal — collects at the outlet.

When it blocks, the pressure has nowhere to go and water sprays out of the chrome cap onto your countertop mid-cycle. That is the signature symptom, and it is startling the first time. People usually assume the dishwasher has failed.

The repair is easy and worth knowing: pull the chrome cap, lift the plastic cover, and clear the outlet nipple and the hose running from it to the disposal. That short piece of hose is almost always where the blockage sits. If your symptom is standing water rather than spraying, start with a dishwasher that will not drain.

The mistake that causes most new-dishwasher callbacks

If the dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal, the disposal ships with the knockout plug still in place in its dishwasher inlet. It has to be punched out with a screwdriver and a tap of a hammer — and the plug retrieved from inside the disposal.

Leave the plug in and the dishwasher cannot drain at all. Punch it out and leave the fragment rattling around inside and it will eventually jam the disposal. This is far and away the most common cause of “the new dishwasher does not work,” and it takes thirty seconds to get right.

Doing the high loop properly

  • Run the hose as high as it will go under the countertop — the top of the loop should be above the level of the sink basin bottom.
  • Strap it. A clamp or bracket screwed into the cabinet side or counter underside. Zip-tying it to a supply line is not fastening it to anything structural.
  • Do not kink it. The loop should be a smooth arc; a crushed hose restricts the drain.
  • Check it after any work under the sink. Loops get knocked down when someone stores cleaning bottles under there, and nobody notices until the dishwasher smells.
