The real deciding factor is your local code

Most homeowners expect this comparison to end in a performance verdict. It does not. Both materials are established DWV piping with their own published ASTM standards, and both have been in the ground and in walls for decades.

What actually decides it is jurisdiction. Plumbing codes are adopted and amended locally, and many areas have effectively standardized on one material — some inspectors will pass only PVC, others expect ABS because that is what the whole neighborhood was built with. Before you buy a single length of pipe, the useful question is not “which is better” but “what does my inspector want to see?”

The practical tell: look at what is already in the house, and at what the local supply house stocks deepest. Those two answers usually agree, and they usually match the inspector.

What the standards actually say — and what they don’t

Each material has its own ASTM specification for DWV use:

  • PVCASTM D2665, “Standard Specification for Poly(Vinyl Chloride) (PVC) Plastic Drain, Waste, and Vent Pipe and Fittings.”
  • ABSASTM D2661, “Standard Specification for Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) Schedule 40 Plastic Drain, Waste, and Vent Pipe and Fittings.”

A note on the temperature limits you will see quoted everywhere: the public ASTM pages for D2665 and D2661 do not publish a maximum service temperature, and the figures repeated across the internet are drawn from manufacturer literature and trade convention rather than from the text of those two specs. We are not going to attach a number to a standard that does not state one on its published page.

What matters far more in a real house is the principle behind those numbers: DWV pipe is drainage pipe, not pressure pipe, and it is not hot-water supply pipe. It handles fixture discharge. The failure people actually cause is running a dishwasher or a boiler drain into an undersized or unsupported plastic line and letting sustained heat soften a run that was never braced for it.

The one-step vs two-step difference — this is the honest advantage

This is where the two genuinely diverge, and it is a workflow difference, not a quality difference.

PVC is a two-step joint: primer first, then cement. Oatey — who make the cements most of us use — put it plainly: “A primer is required by plumbing codes for PVC and CPVC applications, but is not used on ABS pipe.” Their solvent-welding guide adds the reason: “PVC and CPVC typically require primer because their surfaces need to be softened to achieve the strongest weld,” and, for the other material, simply: “ABS does not use primer.”

Two consequences follow, and both are real:

  • ABS is faster. One can, one motion, no waiting on primer. On a big DWV rough-in that adds up over a day.
  • PVC is easier to inspect. Purple primer leaves a visible ring at every joint, which is exactly why many jurisdictions require the colored version — an inspector can see from six feet away that you prepped the joint. That visible ring is a feature for the person signing off your work.

Never solvent-weld ABS to PVC

This is the single most important line in this article, and it is the one people get wrong.

They are different plastics. A solvent cement formulated to soften and fuse one of them does not create the same weld on the other, and a glued ABS-to-PVC joint is the kind of failure that looks fine on the day and shows up as a wet ceiling later. Transition cements exist and are sold, but their acceptance varies by jurisdiction and plenty of inspectors will not pass a glued transition at all.

The joint that is accepted essentially everywhere is mechanical: a banded, shielded coupling with a rubber sleeve and stainless clamps. It is reversible, it is visible, and no inspector will argue with it. If you are tying new work into an older house that turns out to be the other material, that coupling is the answer.

How they behave differently in the house

Impact and cold

ABS is the more forgiving of the two when it is cold — the trade reputation is that PVC gets brittle in an unheated crawlspace or an outdoor stack in winter and is more likely to crack on a hard knock. Treat that as trade experience rather than a published figure.

Rigidity and support

PVC is the stiffer material; ABS has a little more give. That cuts both ways: the stiffer pipe holds a long horizontal run truer between hangers, while the more flexible one is more tolerant of a slightly out-of-line fit-up. Either way, support spacing is set by your adopted code, and a sagging drain line is a slow-drain complaint waiting to happen — the same root cause we cover in why a sink drains slowly.

Sunlight

Neither material likes UV. Black ABS in particular should be painted with a light-colored latex paint where it is exposed outdoors — an unpainted exposed vent will chalk and degrade over years of sun.

Noise

Both plastics transmit more drain noise than cast iron. If a stack runs behind a bedroom wall, the fix is insulation around the pipe, not a change of plastic — swapping PVC for ABS will not solve it.

So which should you buy?

  • Repairing or extending existing work: match what is already there. This is not a preference, it is the whole answer — and if the existing material is the other one, use a mechanical transition coupling.
  • New work, both permitted: ABS if you value the one-step joint and speed; PVC if you want the visible primer ring for inspection and the material most buyers’ home inspectors expect to see.
  • You are not sure what is permitted: call the local building department before you buy. It is a five-minute call that prevents a torn-out rough-in.

Either way, buy the pipe, fittings and the correct cement as one shopping trip. Getting home with black pipe and PVC cement is the most common version of this mistake.

Can I glue ABS to PVC?

No — not with ordinary solvent cement. They are different plastics and the weld is not equivalent.
