What a wet vent actually is

Every trap needs air behind it so draining water doesn’t siphon the trap dry. The obvious way to supply that air is a dedicated dry vent for each fixture — pipe that never carries water. In a bathroom that means a lot of pipe in a lot of walls.

A wet vent is the code’s sanctioned shortcut: the drain line from one fixture is oversized and does double duty as the vent path for the next fixture downstream. The upper portion of the pipe carries air while the lower portion carries the first fixture’s occasional discharge. A lavatory’s drain, for example, commonly serves as the vent for the tub or the toilet in the same bathroom group.

Read it slowly, because each phrase is a rule people break:

  • “Bathroom groups” — toilets, lavatories, tubs, showers. Not the kitchen sink, not the laundry, not a bar sink. Tying a non-bathroom fixture into a wet-vented run is the classic violation.
  • “Two bathroom groups” — at most. A third bathroom needs its own venting.
  • “Same floor level” — a downstairs bath cannot ride an upstairs bath’s wet vent. Stacked bathrooms need a different arrangement.

And the system still needs one real dry vent to anchor it (P3108.2.1 as adopted): “The dry-vent connection for a horizontal wet-vent system shall be an individual vent or a common vent for any bathroom group fixture.” In practice that dry vent is usually the lavatory’s — the sink vents up through the wall, and everything downstream wet-vents off its drain.

Size is not optional — the table

A wet vent works only because the pipe is big enough to carry water low and air high at the same time. The code sizes it by drainage fixture units (d.f.u.) — Table P3108.3 as adopted:

The practical takeaway: the 2″ line that would be perfectly legal as a plain drain is often too small once it is also the wet vent for the group. This is why “it drains fine” is not the same as “it is vented right” — an undersized wet vent works on day one and gurgles for the rest of its life.

How a bad wet vent announces itself

A wet-venting problem produces exactly the symptoms of any starved vent, because that is what it is:

  • Gurgling from one fixture when another drains — the flushing toilet pulls its air through the tub’s trap. The mechanics are the same as in a toilet that bubbles and gurgles.
  • A trap that keeps losing its seal and a bathroom that smells faintly of drain — the trap-siphon mechanism covered in trap arm length.
