Quick answer from a licensed plumber: For a standard 1½” bathroom or kitchen fixture drain, the trap can be up to 6 feet from its vent. A 1¼” drain gets 5 feet, a 2″ drain 8 feet. And the measurement is not where people think it is — it runs from the trap weir to the vent fitting, following the pipe, not straight-line from the fixture.

Two words in that sentence do all the work

“Developed length”

Developed length means measured along the pipe, following every fitting and change of direction — not the straight-line distance from the fixture to the wall. A drain that jogs around a cabinet, drops, and runs sideways can easily be nine feet of developed length inside a run that looks like four feet across the room.

This is the single most common way a DIY drain fails inspection while the installer is certain it is fine. They measured the room. The code measures the pipe.

“From the trap weir”

The weir is the top of the trap’s dam — the crest the water spills over on its way out, not the inlet, not the fixture, not the center of the trap. Measurement starts there. The same weir is the reference point for washing machine standpipe height.

People routinely measure from the tailpiece or from the sink, which gives them several inches of imaginary slack. On a 1½” drain with a 6-foot allowance, a few inches is the difference between passing and not.

Why this rule exists at all — and what it feels like when you break it

The trap arm has to slope enough to drain but not so much, and not so far, that the draining water fills the pipe and turns into a siphon. A trap that drops straight down instead of running sideways does this by design — that is an S-trap, and it is prohibited.

Run the arm too long and the water flowing away from the trap seals the pipe behind it and pulls the trap’s water out with it. You are left with an empty trap and a direct opening to the drain system. That is the mechanism, and the symptoms follow in a predictable order:

  • A gurgle as the fixture finishes draining — air being dragged through the trap seal.
  • A smell that comes and goes, worst in a room used infrequently.
  • A trap that is visibly dry when you look, on a fixture people insist they use.

The slope column matters as much as the distance

Note that the table pairs each size with a slope: ¼ inch per foot for 1¼” through 2″, and ⅛ inch per foot for 3″ and 4″.

The instinct that “more slope drains better” is wrong on a trap arm, and it is worth understanding why. Too much fall and the water races away and leaves the solids behind, which is how you build a slow drain that no amount of snaking permanently fixes. Too little and it does not clear at all. The specified slope is the compromise, and on a trap arm it is a ceiling as much as a floor.

What to do when you are over the limit

In rough order of how much work they are:

  1. Move the vent closer. The correct answer where a wall is open and it is practical.
  2. Increase the drain size. Going from 1½” to 2″ takes the allowance from 6 feet to 8 — sometimes that alone solves it, and the fittings are cheap.
  3. Re-route the arm to remove developed length. Straightening out a needless jog around a cabinet can recover a surprising amount, because every fitting counts.

What not to do: leave it long and hope. An over-length trap arm does not fail immediately or consistently — it fails intermittently, which is exactly why people conclude it is fine and move on. Then a guest bathroom that gets used twice a year starts smelling and nobody connects it to the drain someone installed three summers ago.

While the trap is apart

If you are re-cutting the arm anyway, replace the trap rather than reusing it — slip-joint washers take a set and a disturbed old joint is a likely weep. Does an air admittance valve fix a too-long trap arm?

It can, by giving the arm a vent much closer than the existing one — but only where your jurisdiction accepts AAVs, and it can never be the building’s only vent. Moving the vent, increasing the drain size, or removing needless developed length are the alternatives.
