S-Trap vs P-Trap: Why One Is Illegal

The one-letter difference, and why it matters

Both traps hold a plug of water in a U-bend, and that water is the only thing standing between your kitchen and the drain system’s air. The difference is what happens after the bend.

A P-trap comes out of the U and runs horizontally — the trap arm — to a drain line that has a vent. Looked at from the side it draws a “P” lying on its back. When the sink empties, the vent feeds air in behind the slug of draining water, the siphon breaks, and the U-bend stays full.

An S-trap comes out of the U and turns straight back down. From the side it draws an “S”. There is no horizontal arm and — this is the real defect — no vent. The falling leg is a ready-made siphon hose aimed at the floor: the same shape you’d deliberately build to empty an aquarium.

So the S-trap doesn’t fail because it’s old or cheap. It fails because draining the fixture is itself the siphon action. Every strong drain-down pulls some or all of the seal water out with it.

What the code actually says

The residential code prohibits the design by name. Section P3201.5 as adopted lists prohibited traps, and the list reads: “Bell traps” · “Separate fixture traps with interior partitions, except those lavatory traps made of plastic, stainless steel or other corrosion-resistant material” · “S traps” · “Drum traps” · “Trap designs with moving parts.”

The UPC family prohibits it just as flatly — its trap section (1004.1 as adopted) names “S” traps, bell traps and crown-vented traps as prohibited.

Note what the code is doing here: it doesn’t ban “traps that lose their seal” in the abstract. It bans the shapes that lose their seal, by name, because inspectors need a rule they can see from across the room. An S under a sink is a fail on sight.

How an S-trap announces itself

  • The glug-glug at the end of the drain-down. That distinctive gulping as the basin finishes emptying is the siphon running to completion and then sucking air — the sound of the seal leaving.
  • Sewer smell that comes and goes, worst after heavy use, gone after the fixture sits unused with a refilled trap. The intermittency is why people chase it for months — the same dry-trap mechanism covered in trap arm length.
  • It re-seals itself just enough to confuse you. The last dribble of water from the basin often partially refills the U — so the trap is neither reliably full nor reliably empty. Some days it smells, some days it doesn’t.

Where S-traps still lurk

  • Pre-war and mid-century homes that have never had the drains opened up — the S-trap was normal practice once, which is why the prohibition exists at all.
  • Old DIY remodels, where someone moved a sink away from the wall and solved the “the drain is now below and behind me” problem by turning straight down.
  • Island and peninsula sinks — no wall means no easy vent, and an S-trap is the lazy answer. The code’s answers for islands are the loop vent or, where accepted, an air admittance valve.
  • Imported fixture kits. S-traps remain legal and common in other countries, and hardware sold online sometimes assumes them.

Do you have to rip it out today?

Honest answer: no inspector is coming to your house tonight. An existing S-trap in an old home is a known, grandfathered nuisance, not an emergency. Live with it knowingly if you must — run water weekly in seldom-used fixtures to keep the seal topped up.

But two things are true:

  • Any permitted work that touches that drain must correct it. You cannot legally rebuild around a prohibited trap, and an inspector will fail the S on sight.
  • The fix is usually cheap enough that living with the smell makes no sense. Under a typical sink it is an afternoon and modest parts, not a wall-opening project.

The two legal fixes

1. The real fix: convert to a vented P-trap

Replace the S with a P-trap whose arm runs to a properly vented line. Where running a real vent means opening walls, the accepted shortcut in most jurisdictions is a P-trap whose arm rises to an air admittance valve above the trap — the AAV supplies the air that breaks the siphon.
