How expansion actually works
Instead of compressing a ring onto the outside of the tubing, you stretch the tube and a reinforcing ring outward, push the fitting in while the tube is still open, and then let the PEX do the work. PEX-A has thermal shape memory: it wants to return to its original diameter, so it shrinks back down and clamps itself onto the fitting barb. The joint gets tighter as it recovers.
The practical consequences are what matter on a job:
- Full flow. The fitting sits inside a tube that has returned to size, so you don’t get the internal restriction a crimp fitting creates. On long runs and multi-fixture branches, that’s real pressure you keep.
- No ring to position. Nothing to slide on first, nothing to forget.
- It’s a PEX-A-only method. This is the big one — see below.
⚠️ Expansion only works on PEX-A
Do not use an expansion tool on PEX-B. PEX-B doesn’t have the same shape memory; expand it and it won’t recover onto the fitting properly, which means a joint that looks made and isn’t. PEX-B gets crimp rings or cinch clamps.

Manual or cordless?
Manual is the honest answer for most people. It’s a fraction of the cost, needs no battery platform, and for a bathroom or a handful of connections the extra effort is nothing. The limitation shows up on 1-inch tube and on cold days, when the plastic is stiff and each joint takes several expansion strokes.
Cordless earns its price on a repipe. It rotates the head automatically between strokes (which is how you get an even expansion rather than a lobed one), it doesn’t care about the cold, and it saves your hands across a few hundred joints. If you’re doing one house, borrow or rent before buying.

Making a joint that holds
- Cut square. An angled cut won’t expand evenly. See the PEX cutter guide.
- Slide the expansion ring on flush with the tube end — it expands with the tube and reinforces the joint.
- Expand in stages, rotating between strokes. Rotating is what prevents a lobed, uneven opening. Auto-rotation tools do it for you.
- Insert the fitting immediately, all the way to the shoulder. You have a short working window before the tube recovers.
- Hold it for a few seconds, then leave it alone while it shrinks down.
- Give it time before pressure — longer when it’s cold. Recovery is a temperature-dependent process; a joint that isn’t fully recovered can weep. This is the step people rush.
Common mistakes
- Over-expanding. Too many strokes stretches the tube past what it can recover from. Follow the tool’s stroke count for the size.
- Forgetting the ring. Nothing about the expansion tells you it’s missing until the joint fails.
- Working in the cold without allowing extra recovery time. The most common cold-weather callback on PEX-A.
- Reusing a fitting from a cut-out joint. Cut it out and use a new one.
FAQ
Can I use an expansion tool on PEX-B?
No. Expansion relies on PEX-A’s thermal shape memory to shrink back onto the fitting. PEX-B doesn’t recover the same way, so the joint won’t clamp properly. Use crimp rings or cinch clamps on PEX-B.
Is a manual PEX expansion tool good enough?
For a bathroom, a kitchen, or occasional repairs, yes — and it’s far cheaper. Cordless earns its keep on a whole-house repipe, on 1-inch tube, and in cold weather where stiff tubing makes every joint harder.
