DeWalt vs Milwaukee PEX Expander: Which Should You Buy

Both are cordless cold-expansion tools for PEX-A, and the tool matters less than the heads. If you already run M12 or M18 batteries, buy Milwaukee. If you already run 20V MAX, buy DeWalt. If you own Uponor ProPEX heads, they fit the Milwaukee tools but will not auto-rotate on them.

Nobody buys a cordless expander casually. It is a repipe tool, or a tool you buy because you finally lost patience with a manual one on a ceiling. So the question is worth answering properly, and the honest answer is not the one the marketing on either box is trying to sell you.

What Is the DeWalt 20V MAX PEX Expander?

DeWalt sells two cordless expanders on the 20V MAX platform. The DCE400B is described on DeWalt’s own product page as the 20V MAX 1″ PEX Expander, and it expands PEX Type-A tubing from 3/8″ to 1″. It has an automatic rotating head, full-trigger actuation, an onboard LED and a belt hook. Battery and charger are sold separately on the bare tool.

The larger DCE410B is the 20V MAX XR 1-1/2″ PEX Expander. DeWalt’s page for it says the tool expands 3/8″ to 1-1/2″ ASTM F1960 approved PEX pipe, including Uponor ProPEX tubing, that expansion heads are sold separately, and that it takes the existing DeWalt 3/8″ to 1″ heads. It runs a brushless motor and has a pocket for a Tool Connect chip if you track tools.

What Is the Milwaukee M12 ProPEX Expansion Tool?

The Milwaukee 2432-20 is listed on Milwaukee’s site as the M12 ProPEX Expansion Tool. Its published specifications give a capacity of 3/8″ to 1″, 12V, a length of 7-1/2″, a weight of 4.3 lbs and 60 strokes per minute. Milwaukee’s own copy says it is designed specifically for Uponor ProPEX, and that expansion heads are sold separately.

Milwaukee’s line does not stop there. The 2632-20 M18 ProPEX Expansion Tool is published at 3/8″ to 1-1/2″, 18V, 9-1/2″ long and 7.1 lbs. The M18 FUEL 2″ ProPEX Expander kit, 2932-22XC, ships with 1-1/4″, 1-1/2″ and 2″ heads and ONE-KEY tracking. Above that sits the M18 FORCE LOGIC 2″-3″ kit, 2633-22HD, which Uponor describes as hydraulic and good to 3″.

DeWalt vs Milwaukee PEX Expander: Whose Heads Will You Be Buying?

That is the real decision, and it is not close. Both tools do the same physical job: rotate a cone, expand the tube and the ring, wait for the memory to close on the fitting. Both auto-rotate. Both are competent. What actually separates them is which expansion heads you already own or can get on a Saturday, and which battery is already in your van.

Everything below follows from that. Sizes, warranty, weight and speed are real differences, but they are tiebreakers. The head question decides the purchase, and it decides it before you have compared a single specification.

Cold Expansion vs Crimp and Clamp

Expansion is one of three ways to join PEX, and the only one of the three where the pipe itself does the sealing. ASTM F1960 is the standard for cold expansion fittings with PEX reinforcing rings. The tool stretches the tube and ring over the fitting; the material’s memory pulls both back down and grips it. No heat, no glue, no dry fit.

The other two systems use a fitting that does not move. ASTM F1807 covers metal insert fittings held by a copper crimp ring; ASTM F2098 covers the stainless steel clamps people call cinch clamps. Those tools are cheaper and the fittings are everywhere, but the joint depends on the ring being sized and set correctly. If you have not picked a system yet, read crimp vs clamp and crimp rings vs cinch clamps before you buy any tool.

One thing to be clear about: expansion is a PEX-A method. DeWalt’s own listing calls it PEX Type-A tubing. If your house is piped in PEX-B, an expander is the wrong tool and no amount of specification reading changes that. The differences are laid out in PEX-A vs PEX-B.

Expansion Heads and Ring Compatibility

Here is the part that decides it, and both manufacturers publish it plainly.

DeWalt’s DCE400B page says the tool uses DeWalt PEX expansion heads and is compatible with Milwaukee and Uponor heads. That is DeWalt’s claim about DeWalt’s tool, and it is a genuine advantage if you already have heads in a case.

Uponor’s own page for the Milwaukee tools is more detailed and cuts the other way. It states that all standard Uponor expander heads are compatible with the M12 and M18 tools, but that Uponor heads will not auto-rotate on them — only Milwaukee heads auto-rotate. It also states that H-heads are not compatible with Milwaukee tools, and that Milwaukee heads are not compatible with Uponor tools.

Read those two together and the picture is clear. Milwaukee’s tools take Uponor heads but lose the auto-rotation that makes the tool worth having; DeWalt says its tool takes both Milwaukee and Uponor heads. Uponor also lists Milwaukee’s expanders in its own tools catalog — M12, M12 FUEL, M18, M18 FUEL and M18 FORCE LOGIC — and no DeWalt tools appeared there when we checked in September 2026. If your supply house is an Uponor house, that is worth knowing before you order heads.

Battery Platforms

This is the second half of the decision and it is usually already made for you. DeWalt’s expanders are 20V MAX. Milwaukee’s are M12 for the 1″ tool and M18 for everything above it. Nobody should buy into a second battery platform for one tool.

The M12 tool being 12V is not a weakness here, and it is the reason the M12 is the one plumbers actually reach for on residential work. Milwaukee publishes it at 4.3 lbs against 7.1 lbs for the M18, on a right-angle body that fits between joists. On a repipe you hold that tool up all day.

Pipe Sizes Each Tool Covers

Match the tool to the largest pipe you will actually expand, not the largest you can imagine.

For residential work up to 1″, the DeWalt DCE400B and the Milwaukee M12 2432-20 both cover 3/8″ to 1″ and that is the whole of a normal house. For 1-1/4″ and 1-1/2″ mains and commercial risers, DeWalt’s DCE410B and Milwaukee’s M18 2632-20 both reach 1-1/2″. Beyond that only Milwaukee has published options: the M18 FUEL 2932 to 2″, and the FORCE LOGIC 2633-22HD to 3″.

DeWalt does claim its DCE410 is up to 20% faster at expanding than Milwaukee’s 2632 M18 expander. That is DeWalt’s own comparison, and DeWalt’s own footnote says Milwaukee has not endorsed or approved it. Treat it as a manufacturer claim, not a measurement.

Warranty and Service

At the time of writing, September 2026, the published terms differ. Milwaukee lists a 5 Year Limited Warranty on the 2432-20 and the 2632-20. DeWalt lists a 3 Year Limited Warranty with 1 Year Free Service and a 90 Days Satisfaction Guarantee on both the DCE400B and the DCE410B.

Warranty terms change, so check the page for the exact SKU before you buy. In practice the thing that keeps an expander working is grease and clean heads, not paperwork — both makers sell cone grease for a reason, and a dry cone is what kills these tools.

Which Should You Buy?

Buy the one that matches the batteries in your van and the heads at your supply house. If that is genuinely a tie, and most of your work is a house rather than a riser, buy the Milwaukee M12 ProPEX expansion tool kit: Milwaukee publishes it at 4.3 lbs, the lightest figure any of these makers publishes, it is right-angled for joist bays, and it is what the Uponor system is built around.

If you are already on 20V MAX, the DeWalt 20V MAX PEX expander kit (DCE400D2) covers the same 3/8″ to 1″ range and, by DeWalt’s own statement, will take Milwaukee and Uponor heads as well as its own. If your work runs past 1″, step up to the DeWalt 20V MAX XR expander (DCE410B), which is published to 1-1/2″ with heads sold separately.

Will Milwaukee expander heads fit a DeWalt tool? DeWalt’s own DCE400B product page says the tool uses DeWalt PEX expansion heads and is compatible with Milwaukee and Uponor heads. Milwaukee makes no matching claim for its tools taking DeWalt heads. Check the head against the tool you own before ordering either way.

Do Uponor ProPEX heads work on Milwaukee expanders? Uponor states that all standard Uponor expander heads are compatible with the M12 and M18 tools, but that they will not auto-rotate — only Milwaukee heads do. Uponor also says H-heads are not compatible with Milwaukee tools at all.

Which is lighter, the M12 or the DeWalt? Milwaukee publishes the M12 2432-20 at 4.3 lbs and 7-1/2″ long. DeWalt does not publish a weight for the DCE400B on that product page, so we are not going to guess at one. On size alone the M12 is the compact option.

Can these tools expand PEX-B? No. Cold expansion under ASTM F1960 is a PEX-A method, and DeWalt’s listing names PEX Type-A tubing specifically. PEX-B is joined with crimp rings or cinch clamps instead.

How big can each brand go? DeWalt publishes to 1-1/2″ with the DCE410B. Milwaukee publishes to 1-1/2″ with the M18 2632-20, to 2″ with the M18 FUEL 2932 kit, and to 3″ with the M18 FORCE LOGIC 2633-22HD.

Bottom Line

These are two good tools doing an identical job, and the specification sheets are close enough that they should not be what decides it. Buy on your battery platform first and your head supply second. Milwaukee owns the top of the size range and the Uponor relationship; DeWalt states the broader head compatibility and is the obvious pick if your van is yellow. Either one, keep the cone greased.
