Garbage Disposal Sink Flange Replacement by Brand

Quick answer from a licensed plumber: A sink flange belongs to its brand’s mount. InSinkErator flanges are for InSinkErator-made disposers; Waste King sells one flange kit for EZ Mount and another for Pro 3-Bolt. For thick sinks, InSinkErator says its extended flange is required from 3/4 to 1-3/4 inches; Waste King says the sink thickness cannot exceed 1/2 inch, with extended Pro 3-Bolt flanges covering 1/2 to 1-1/4 inches.

InSinkErator disposer, standard sink? The genuine flange fits any InSinkErator-made unit, per its listing. See the InSinkErator FLG-SS on Amazon

Which Flange Fits Which Disposal

DisposalFlange partWhat the maker or listing says
InSinkErator (any)InSinkErator sink flange (FLG series, several finishes)“designed to support your InSinkErator manufactured disposer”; listing: “One 4.5-in by 1.75-in” flange, “baffle (sold separately) not included”
InSinkErator (any)Quick Lock mount QLM-00 (flange plus mount)“fast and easy replacement of existing disposer mounts”
InSinkErator, thick sinkExtended sink flange (10082)“required for sinks that are 3/4″ to 1-3/4″ thick”
Waste King EZ MountEZ Mount sink flange kit (1030)“EZ Mount flange, stopper and mounting hardware”
Waste King Pro 3-BoltPro 3-Bolt Mount sink flange kit (3157AMC)“Mounting hardware for Waste King Pro 3-Bolt Mount Garbage Disposals”

The flange is the top half of the mount, so it stays with the brand. No maker lists a way to hang an InSinkErator on a Waste King flange. The one cross-brand part on the makers’ pages is Waste King’s 3101AMC adapter, which hangs a Waste King EZ Mount disposer on an existing InSinkErator flange; our InSinkErator vs Waste King mount guide explains. Buying a whole new disposer? The flange and mount are in the box, and our garbage disposal picks list each unit’s mount and cord; this page is for replacing the flange on the disposer you have.

Thick Sinks: The Numbers From Each Maker

Standard partsExtended option
InSinkErator“extended mounting flange screws provided with disposer” for thicker sinksExtended sink flange 10082 for sinks 3/4″ to 1-3/4″ thick
Waste King“The sink thickness cannot exceed 1/2″”Pro 3-Bolt Mount disposals: extended flanges for sinks 1/2″ to 1-1/4″ thick

Measure the sink at the drain hole before you buy anything. The InSinkErator flange listing points thick-sink owners, “like a farmhouse sink,” to the extended flange. We found InSinkErator’s extended flange on Amazon only with a low-stock warning when we checked, so it is not linked here. Waste King’s EZ Mount has no extended option on the pages we read, so a sink thicker than 1/2 inch points to a Pro 3-Bolt Waste King or another brand. If you are choosing the sink itself, our workstation kitchen sinks list each model’s material and drain position.

Replacing the Flange: What InSinkErator’s Steps Involve

A flange swap means taking the disposer off and the mount apart. InSinkErator’s replacement guide lays it out:

  1. Turn off the power, disconnect the drain, and free the disposer from the mount with the wrenchette.
  2. “loosen the three mounting screws, pry the snap ring off with a screwdriver and remove the old mounting assembly.”
  3. Push the old sink flange up through the sink hole. InSinkErator’s manual then says to “Remove old plumber’s putty from sink with putty knife.”
  4. “Place a 1/2 inch rope of plumber’s putty around the drain opening in the sink,” drop in the new flange and weight it down.
  5. From below, slide on “the fiber gasket, backup flange and mounting flange,” then reassemble and rehang the disposer.
  6. “test for leaks at the sink flange, dishwasher, tail-pipe and mounting assembly connections.”

Finish Is Only Cosmetic

InSinkErator sells its flange in many finishes; its page lists “10 Finishes.” The fit is the same across finishes, so pick the one that matches your faucet and stopper. Matching stoppers are covered in our disposal stopper guide.

What to Buy

Matched to the table:

We did not find Waste King’s Pro 3-Bolt flange kit (3157AMC) shipped or sold by Amazon when we checked.

Parts You’ll Also Need

For any flange swap:

When to Call a Licensed Plumber

  • The sink is stone, cast iron or a farmhouse sink, or thicker than the standard parts allow.
  • The old flange is corroded into the sink and will not push up.
  • The leak continues after a new flange and fresh putty.

FAQ

Are garbage disposal sink flanges universal?

No. InSinkErator says its flange is designed for InSinkErator-manufactured disposers, and Waste King sells separate flange kits for its EZ Mount and Pro 3-Bolt Mount units.

What flange do I need for a thick sink?

InSinkErator says its extended sink flange is required for sinks 3/4 inch to 1-3/4 inches thick. Waste King says the sink thickness cannot exceed 1/2 inch, with extended flanges for Pro 3-Bolt units on sinks 1/2 inch to 1-1/4 inches thick.

How thick a sink can a Waste King disposal go on?

Waste King says the sink thickness cannot exceed 1/2 inch, except that extended flanges for Pro 3-Bolt Mount disposals handle 1/2 to 1-1/4 inches.

Do I need plumber’s putty under a disposal flange?

InSinkErator’s steps call for a 1/2-inch rope of plumber’s putty around the drain opening before you set the flange.

Does the InSinkErator flange come with a splash guard?

No. The FLG-SS listing says the baffle is sold separately.

Bottom Line

Stay with the brand of the disposer, measure the sink at the drain, and go extended only when the maker’s numbers say so: 3/4 inch and up for InSinkErator, over 1/2 inch for Waste King. Set the flange in fresh putty and leak-test every joint.
