Headlamps for Plumbers

For under-sink and crawlspace work, the Streamlight Bandit Pro 61714 gives soft close-range flood light (180 lumens for 4.5 hours, or 35 lumens for 21 hours) that won’t blind you off a chrome trap. For a mix of flood and spot, the Klein 56064 has three white modes, up to 400 lumens, on a silicone strap. The Klein 56414 adds a red mode, a separate spotlight, a removable bracket and a rear magnet. All three are USB rechargeable with built-in batteries and sold by Amazon.com.

A high output number alone does not tell you how the light will work beside a reflective fitting or with your actual helmet. Compare those details before choosing.

Klein 56414: more beam choices and red lighting

Choose the 56414 when you want an area beam, a separate spotlight and red lighting in one headlamp. The September 2025 instruction sheet (data.kleintools.com) identifies the exact model and its mode table.

Skip it if you want a light with a battery you can quickly swap yourself. Its battery is internal. Also check the strap specification: the maker’s fabric strap contains latex.

The standard new Amazon offer checked for this guide showed stock from Amazon.com with model and part number 56414. The headlamp kit should not be confused with a bundled hard hat or another Klein light sharing a similar housing.

The removable bracket and rear magnet provide different ways to position it. Those are useful options, but the magnet is not a guarantee of attachment to every metal pipe or cabinet surface.

Klein 56064: silicone strap and three white-light modes

Choose the 56064 when you prefer a silicone strap and a simpler set of white-light modes. Its current instruction sheet (data.kleintools.com) lists combined spot/flood, spot and flood settings.

The maker pairs the 400-lumen combined mode with a reported four-hour runtime. Its lower 100-lumen flood mode has a longer reported 22-hour runtime. Treat those as mode-specific maker figures, not a promise of your actual workday performance.

The checked standard new Amazon offer showed stock from Amazon.com; title, model and part number identified 56064.

Skip it if red lighting is required or a user-swappable battery is central to your plan. Those are separate selection needs, and the checked three-mode table does not provide a red mode.

Streamlight 61714 Bandit Pro: a close-range flood option

Choose the 61714 when diffuse light for nearby work is more useful than a long-distance spot beam. The current Bandit Pro page (streamlight.com) describes that close-range lighting role.

The maker publishes 180 lumens with 4.5 hours on high and 35 lumens with 21 hours on low. The October 2024 parts sheet (streamlight.com) maps 61714 to the black light with hat clip, elastic headstrap and USB cord.

Skip it if you require USB-C charging or an easily swapped battery. The linked operating instructions (streamlight.com) specify Micro-USB and a sealed, non-replaceable battery. Do not assume a rubber hard-hat strap from another Bandit Pro package is included with this one.

Flood versus spot under a sink

Think about what you need to see: a nearby nut and supply line, a broader cabinet floor or something farther along the work area. A beam useful for one view can be awkward for another.

A lower setting may be easier to aim at a close, reflective fitting than the highest output. That is a reason to compare usable modes rather than choosing only by the biggest number on the box.

Before the job, check the lamp’s position with your ordinary working posture. Make sure the beam reaches the connection while your hands are holding the tools.

A headlamp moves with your head, so a separate task light can still be useful when the needed light direction is different. Hands-free does not mean every shadow disappears.

Read brightness and runtime as a matched mode

Keep each output figure beside the setting that produced its reported runtime. The longest listed runtime generally belongs to a lower-output mode, not the brightest setting.

The Klein 56414 brochure (data.kleintools.com) separates spot, flood and red performance. Do not read a long red-light or low-mode figure as hours of full white boost output.

Also distinguish maker measurements from your own requirements. Battery condition, starting charge and use pattern matter; a published table is not a guarantee that the lamp remains equally bright throughout every task.

Write down the mode you expect to use and the maker’s matching figure before comparing models. If the setting you need is missing from the comparison, the headline runtime is not enough information.

Check the exact helmet interface

A headlamp strap, a clip for a visor and a direct helmet accessory mount are different attachments. Identify the actual helmet and the approved interface before buying.

The selected Klein products support specified Klein front/rear accessory mounts or their own strap arrangement. A photograph of a hard hat does not mean the hard hat comes with the lamp.

Follow the helmet maker’s rules for accessories. Do not improvise holes, adhesive mounting or another modification because a lamp appears to fit.

For bare-head wear, consider the strap material and adjustment separately from the light body. Manufacturer weight figures may also refer to different combinations of body, strap and clip, so compare what the stated weight actually includes.

Water rating does not mean immersion or hazard approval

The checked Klein instructions list IP65 for 56414 and IP54 for 56064. Streamlight lists IPX4 weather resistance for Bandit Pro. Keep each rating with its own model.

The Klein instructions explicitly prohibit immersion and require the charging-port cover to be properly closed. A wet port should not be opened or used for charging as though the seal still protects it.

These products are not selected here as intrinsically safe lights for a classified atmosphere. A dust or water rating does not establish that approval, and a lamp cannot establish that a space is safe to enter.

This guide does not approve sewer, tank or other confined-space entry. Determine the job’s lighting and site requirements before choosing equipment for that environment.

Charging and battery service belong in the purchase decision

Confirm the actual charging port on the exact model and included cable. The checked Klein sheets specify USB-C; the Bandit Pro instructions specify Micro-USB.

Then check whether a suitable power adapter is included or required separately. Having a cable in the box does not answer that question.

Plan charging while equipment is dry and within the exact instructions’ limits. Do not open a sealed lamp or replace an internal cell using an improvised repair method.

Where uninterrupted lighting matters, decide how you will maintain suitable backup illumination. A low-battery warning helps with planning but should not be treated as guaranteed time to complete a particular task.

Choose the exact kit and verify it before work

Record model number, included mount or strap, charging connector and the white-light setting you intend to use. Check those against the received package.

Similar product names can cover different generations. The Petzl ACTIK CORE page checked for this guide (petzl.com) specifies 625 lumens, while the retail search showed 650-lumen titles. That unresolved version difference is why it is not a purchase pick here.

Operate the controls, check the mount and inspect the port cover before relying on the light at work. This is an ordinary equipment check, not a hands-on review.

Lighting is one part of the setup. Our safety-glasses guide and work-glove guide address separate choices; a headlamp does not replace them.

Frequently asked questions

Is the highest-lumen headlamp automatically best under a sink?

No. Compare beam shape, useful lower modes, mounting and your actual working position.

Which selected model has red lighting?

The Klein 56414 instruction sheet lists red modes. The 56064 checked mode table lists three white-light modes.

Does a long low-mode runtime describe full brightness?

No. Keep the stated output and runtime paired with the exact mode in the maker table.

Does IP65 mean the Klein 56414 can be submerged?

No. Its instructions explicitly say not to immerse it and require proper charging-port sealing.

Can I swap the Bandit Pro battery myself?

The linked instructions describe a sealed, non-replaceable battery; follow maker service instructions rather than opening it.

How we chose

This is a feature-based document comparison, not a hands-on test. We checked Klein maker instructions based on September 2025 revisions, its 56414 brochure, current Streamlight Bandit Pro information and the linked operating instructions dated February 2019. The relevant Klein diagrams/mode tables and Streamlight model table were visually checked. Three standard new Amazon.com offers matched the exact model and part numbers and showed stock on October 14, 2026. Maker performance figures are not independent test results. Different kit and generation details need checking against the actual package. Read our selection method and about Plumbing Picks.
