For everyday plumbing work, the best safety glasses are the 3M SecureFit SF401AF: clear, anti-fog, and impact-rated to ANSI/ISEA Z87.1. Add a sealed goggle such as the 3M GoggleGear 500 GG501SGAF for drain chemicals and overhead drilling, and a Uvex Bionic S8510 face shield over your glasses when you grind or cut cast iron. Glasses handle flying chips. Goggles handle splash and dust. A face shield is extra coverage, never a substitute.

Plumbers get eye injuries from the same few jobs: cutting cast iron, grinding hangers, chipping concrete, drilling overhead and handling drain openers. If you cut soil pipe, our cast iron pipe cutter guide covers the tool; this page covers what goes over your eyes while you use it.
Which eye protection for which job
| Task | Main hazard | Minimum | Better |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cutting PVC, copper, PEX | Small chips | Safety glasses with side protection | Same, anti-fog |
| Snaking a drain | Splash from the cable | Safety glasses | Goggles |
| Drain openers, acid, descaler | Chemical splash | Indirect-vent goggles (D3) | Goggles plus face shield |
| Drilling overhead, core drilling | Dust and debris falling in | Goggles (D4) | Goggles plus face shield |
| Angle grinder, cut-off saw, cast iron | High-speed fragments | Safety glasses or goggles | Face shield over glasses or goggles |
| Brazing with oxy-acetylene | Light and heat | Filter lens of the shade OSHA and the torch maker call for | Same |
The grinding and chemical rows follow the ISEA selection guide in ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2020: a face shield worn over spectacles or goggles for grinding, and indirect-vent goggles for splash. If you run a grinder on hangers or rod, see our angle grinder guide.

How to read Z87.1 markings
Every lens and frame you buy should carry a Z87 marking. OSHA’s eye protection rule, 1910.133, requires eye protection with side protection where there is a hazard from flying objects, and it requires each device to be marked with its maker. The ISEA selection guide lists the marks in ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2020:
- Z87+ is the impact-rated marking. It is what you want for cutting, grinding and drilling. A plain Z87 mark without the plus means the device was not rated for high impact.
- D3 means splash and droplet protection. This is the goggle mark for chemicals and drain openers.
- D4 means dust. D5 means fine dust.
- U with a number is the UV rating. 3M rates the SecureFit 400 lens U6.
- W with a number is a welding shade.
The 2020 edition also added testing and marking for anti-fog lenses, per ISEA. A fogged lens gets pushed up onto your forehead, and then it protects nothing.
BEST SAFETY GLASSES · CLEAR, ANTI-FOG, U6
3M SecureFit SF401AF: the everyday pair
Choose it when you want one pair to live on your face all day. 3M lists the SF401AF with a clear polycarbonate lens and an anti-fog, anti-scratch coating. 3M says the SecureFit 400 series meets the impact-rated protector requirement of ANSI/ISEA Z87.1, and the U6 lens absorbs 99.9% of UVA, UVB and UVC from 200 to 380 nm. The series weighs 19 g. Flexible temples press on the back of the head instead of the sides, which helps under earmuffs. The Amazon listing we link is a case of 20.
Skip it if you wear prescription glasses. 3M’s sheet says the SecureFit 400 is not designed to be worn over prescription spectacles. Look at 3M’s SecureFit over-the-glass eyewear or prescription safety glasses instead.
FOR READING SMALL PRINT · +2.0 READER
3M SecureFit SF420AF: safety glasses with readers
Choose it when you pull your safety glasses off every time you read a data plate or a valve tag. 3M lists reader lenses in the SecureFit 400 series at +1.5 (SF415AF), +2.0 (SF420AF) and +2.5 (SF425AF). The Amazon listing we link is the +2.0 SF420AF, sold as a pack of 20.
Skip it if you need a full prescription or a different strength in each eye. Get prescription safety glasses; the ISEA guide lists Z87-2+ as the mark for prescription frames, and OSHA says ordinary prescription lenses are not eye protection.
BEST GOGGLES · D3 SPLASH, D4 DUST, INDIRECT VENT
3M GoggleGear 500 GG501SGAF: for chemicals and overhead work
Choose it when you pour drain openers, use acid descaler, or drill and core overhead. 3M rates the GoggleGear 500 to the impact-rated protector requirement of ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2020, with D3 splash and D4 dust ratings and indirect ventilation. The Scotchgard anti-fog coating is bonded to the lens, per 3M, and 3M sells the replacement clear lens (GG501SGAF-LENS) on its own.
Skip it if you need goggles over prescription glasses. 3M’s page does not say it fits over glasses. Try it on with your frames first.
BEST FACE SHIELD · HIGH IMPACT, ANTI-FOG
Uvex Bionic S8510: for grinders and cut-off saws
Choose it when you run an angle grinder, a cut-off saw or a chain snap cutter on cast iron. Honeywell lists the S8510 with a clear polycarbonate visor with a hard coat and anti-fog, and rates it to ANSI Z87.1-2015 high impact and CSA Z94.3. Replacement visors are sold separately: S8555 for the anti-fog clear visor. The Amazon listing we link is a 3-pack of the S8510.
Skip it as your only eye protection. Honeywell states the Bionic must be worn with certified safety eyewear, and OSHA’s PPE guide says face shields alone do not give adequate impact protection.
FACE SHIELD FOR HARD HAT USERS
Uvex Bionic S8515: the same shield on a hard hat
Choose it when you already wear a hard hat on commercial jobs. Honeywell lists the S8515 as the anti-fog Bionic shield with a hard hat adapter in place of the headgear. Check that the adapter fits your hard hat’s slots before you buy.
Skip it if you do not wear a hard hat. Get the S8510 with headgear instead.
Safety glasses vs goggles vs face shield
OSHA’s PPE booklet sets out the difference. Safety spectacles have safety frames and impact-resistant lenses. Goggles fit tight and cover the eyes, eye sockets and the area around them, so they protect against impact, dust and splash. Face shields protect against splashes and sprays but will not provide adequate impact protection on their own. Used together with goggles or glasses, a shield adds protection.
In practice:
- Glasses for most of the day. Choose a wraparound fit with no gap at the temple.
- Goggles whenever liquid or dust can come from above or the side. Drain openers, overhead drilling and working under a leaking line are goggle jobs.
- Face shield on top for grinding, cutting and chipping, where a fragment can hit your cheek or throat.
Fit, fog and replacement
- Check the gap. With the glasses on, look straight ahead. You should not see daylight between the lens and your brow or temple.
- Prescription wearers. OSHA 1910.133 requires eye protection that includes the prescription or fits over it without moving the lenses.
- Fight fog. Buy anti-fog lenses. Clean them with water and a soft cloth, not a shop rag.
- Replace scratched lenses. A scratched lens makes you take the glasses off. Replace it.
- Replace after a hit. If a lens or shield takes a solid hit from a fragment, retire it.
Brazing with oxy-acetylene needs a filter lens, not clear safety glasses. Check the shade in the torch manual and OSHA 1910.133. Our acetylene torch kit guide covers the torches.
Safety glasses FAQ
What safety glasses should a plumber wear?
Wear wraparound safety glasses marked Z87+ with an anti-fog lens, such as the 3M SecureFit SF401AF. Add goggles for chemicals and overhead drilling, and a face shield over your glasses or goggles for grinding and cutting cast iron.
What does Z87+ mean on safety glasses?
Z87+ is the impact-rated marking under ANSI/ISEA Z87.1. Other marks add detail: D3 for splash, D4 for dust, D5 for fine dust, U with a number for UV, and W with a number for a welding shade.
Are safety glasses or goggles better for drain cleaner?
Goggles. Drain openers are a splash hazard, and safety glasses leave gaps at the top and sides. Use indirect-vent goggles with a D3 splash rating, such as the 3M GoggleGear 500, and add a face shield if you are pouring.
Can a face shield replace safety glasses?
No. OSHA says face shields alone do not give adequate impact protection, and Honeywell states the Uvex Bionic must be worn with certified safety eyewear. Wear glasses or goggles under the shield.
Can I wear safety glasses over my prescription glasses?
Only if they are made to fit over glasses. OSHA requires eye protection that includes your prescription or fits over it without moving the lenses. 3M says its SecureFit 400 is not designed for that; 3M sells separate over-the-glass eyewear.
How we chose
This is a document-based comparison from a licensed plumber’s point of view. We read 3M and Honeywell product pages and spec sheets for the exact linked models, OSHA’s eye protection rule and PPE booklet, and the ISEA selection guide for ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2020. We picked anti-fog lenses because fog is the main reason people take their eye protection off. Sources and linked listings were read October 14, 2026; sellers and availability change. We do not publish prices or claim hands-on testing. More about our selection method and Plumbing Picks.
