The best swaging tool for occasional soft-copper work is the Yellow Jacket 60430 if you need its smaller tube sizes and a combined flaring kit; choose the Yellow Jacket 60407 for a lever-operated expander on its included larger sizes. For hydraulic forming, consider the Mastercool 71710 through a dealer. Match actual tube outside diameter, temper and wall thickness before choosing any kit.

Included sizes and kit parts come from Yellow Jacket’s 60430 table (yellowjacket.com), its 60407 table (yellowjacket.com) and Mastercool’s 71710 parts list (mastercool.com). A broad headline range does not mean every head ships in the case.
Check tube OD and included heads
Buy from the actual outside diameter and the tool maker’s stated material limits. A plumbing trade size, a metric insulation label and a head stamped in inches are not interchangeable measurements. Check the tube identification and measure the tubing itself. Then check wall thickness and temper against the exact head instructions.
The clearest purchase difference here is the small end of the range. The 60430 includes a 1/4-inch position. The 60407 kit starts at 3/8 inch and lists its 5/16-inch head separately; its larger optional heads are separate purchases too. If your job needs a size absent from the case, the kit is incomplete for your work even if the handle could accept another head.
Do not assume heads interchange across brands because they screw onto a similar-looking tool. Check the exact replacement part number and compatibility. Borrowed heads with an uncertain fit are a reason to stop, not a shortcut.
SMALLER TUBE SIZES · COMBINED KIT
Yellow Jacket 60430: smaller tube kit
Choose it when you want one case for swaging and 45-degree SAE flaring, including 1/4-inch OD tubing. Yellow Jacket lists an aluminum bar and body, a quick-connect yoke and six inch-sized positions. Its model table (yellowjacket.com) separates the inch-only 60430 from the 60431 kit that also includes metric positions.
A combined kit suits the plumber who forms copper only occasionally and also needs a flare on compatible equipment. Keep the swaging pin and flaring cone identified in the case. They make different end shapes; changing the fitting connection means changing the tooling and procedure.
Skip it if the job needs tubing beyond the included range, metric heads or a faster repeated expansion workflow. Check the space needed for the bar and yoke before buying it for a repair beside a wall. A compact case does not prove the assembled tool fits the work area.
LEVER EXPANDER · CHECK HANDLE CLEARANCE
Yellow Jacket 60407: lever expander
Choose it when your work uses the six included sizes and there is room to move the lever fully. The 60407 kit listing (yellowjacket.com) includes the handles, heads, deburring tool and case. It is an expander kit, so buy separate flaring equipment if the connection calls for a flare.
The maker gives head-specific wall limits. Check that table rather than applying the largest listed wall thickness to every head. The tool’s ability to expand another material or a larger optional size does not establish that your supplied head can do it.
Skip it if you need 1/4-inch tubing from this kit, cannot open the handles in the available space or have tubing outside its documented limits. Yellow Jacket calls for soft tube or annealing before expansion in the manual. That is not permission to heat an installed or charged system. If temper or system condition is uncertain, use qualified help and an approved alternative joint.
HYDRAULIC OPTION · DEALER PURCHASE
Mastercool 71710: hydraulic option
Choose it when you want hydraulic forming and the listed copper sizes cover the job. Mastercool’s 71710 page (mastercool.com) identifies a hand-held press, yoke, matching die sets and swaging adapters, plus a reamer and case. The hydraulic mechanism supplies the forming force; the correct adapter, die and tube preparation still decide the result.
Skip it if you only need a single occasional socket and an approved coupling would handle the repair more simply. Check case contents against the exact model. A pump sold alone or a similar-numbered automotive kit is not the complete 71710 tubing set. We did not confirm an exact in-stock Amazon offer, so this remains a dealer option.
Swaging, flaring and a separate coupling
A swaging tool enlarges the end of compatible tubing so a matching tube can enter it. A flaring tool forms a different end for a flare fitting. A separate coupling supplies its own socket. None of those connections can be substituted merely because the pieces slide together.
For a domestic plumbing repair, start with the approved joint design. The tool listing does not establish that a field-formed socket is acceptable for your water service, inspection or equipment. If that approval is unclear, a suitable manufactured coupling is the straightforward option to discuss with your plumber.
A swaged socket is not a finished pressure-tight connection. Joining method, preparation, filler, engagement and inspection must follow the approved system procedure. Our plumbing torch guide covers torch selection; it does not replace a joint specification.
Punch, lever, hydraulic or drill driven?
- Punch tools: check the stated tube size and material. Hammer access and control matter; a socket formed by impact still needs inspection.
- Lever expanders: check the supplied heads and handle travel. A lever can be convenient on a bench but awkward beside an installed elbow.
- Hydraulic tools: check the die, adapter and yoke as a set. Hydraulic force does not make the wrong size safe.
- Drill-driven swagers: follow the exact accessory maker’s approved driver, speed and tube limits. We have not selected a drill-driven model here, so do not apply these hand-tool instructions to a spinning bit.
When the expanded tube will not fit
Stop before forcing the mating tube into the socket. Check actual OD, the correct head, burrs, tube temper and whether the head was seated as instructed. Inspect for cracks, folds or an uneven mouth. A split end is not repaired by adding more filler.
The 60407 owner’s manual (yellowjacket.com) calls for deburring both edges and seating the tube to the head’s stop. It also describes partial expansion and rotation for small-diameter tubing. Apply that only to this tool and the specified tube; do not generalize it to another expander. If the fit remains wrong, consult the maker instead of repeatedly stretching the same end.
Preparation and inspection
- Identify the system. Establish whether a formed socket and your joining method are approved. Leave refrigerant, fuel gas, medical gas and other specialized systems to a qualified professional.
- Isolate the work. Do not cut, heat or form a live, pressurized or charged line. Follow the system’s shutdown and safe-work procedure.
- Prepare the tube. Make a square cut, remove burrs and keep debris out of the system. Check the maker’s preparation and cleaning instructions.
- Fit the tooling. Match the head, die or pin to the actual tube and supported material. Confirm that the assembled tool can move freely.
- Form and inspect. Follow the exact tool manual. Reject cracked, distorted or uncertain ends instead of hiding them inside a joint.
- Complete the approved joint. Use its specified engagement, joining and test procedure. Do not invent a pressure-test value from the tool’s marketing page.
Swaging tool FAQ
What is a swaging tool used for?
A copper-tube swager expands a compatible tube end to accept another tube. Wire-rope swagers and PEX expanders serve different systems. Choose from the actual job and material, not the word swaging alone.
Which kit includes a 1/4-inch swaging size?
Yellow Jacket lists 1/4-inch OD among the 60430 kit positions. Its 60407 kit starts at 3/8 inch. Mastercool lists 1/4 inch among the 71710 copper sizes. Confirm the complete kit contents before ordering.
Why will the expanded copper tube not accept the next tube?
Check actual OD, head size, burrs, temper and seating against the exact manual. Stop if the socket cracks or distorts. Do not force the fit or keep expanding an uncertain tube end.
Can I swage hard copper tubing?
Do not assume a tool intended for soft copper accepts hard-drawn tube as supplied. Follow its exact material and preparation instructions. Yellow Jacket’s 60407 manual calls for soft tube or annealing first; heating an installed or charged system is not a safe shortcut.
Is swaging better than buying a coupling?
Only where the formed joint is approved and correctly made. A tool listing does not establish acceptance for your system. A compatible manufactured coupling may be simpler for an occasional plumbing repair; confirm the joint design with your plumber.
