Best Acetylene Torch Kit (2026): TurboTorch Picks

Plumbing Picks is reader-supported. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.

Quick answer from a licensed plumber: Buy the TurboTorch X-4B air-acetylene kit for most plumbing and HVAC work. TurboTorch lists it to soft solder copper up to 3-1/2 in. and silver braze up to 2 in., on a 40 cu. ft. “B” tank. For trigger lighting, the PL-8ADLX-B (2 in. soft solder, 1 in. silver braze). For a small 10 cu. ft. MC tank, TurboTorch makes the PL-8ADLX-MC, though we found no listing that met our seller and stock rules on October 1. None of these kits includes a tank; get one from a gas supplier.

Our pick for most plumbers: the TurboTorch X-4B, 3-1/2 in. soft solder and 2 in. silver braze on a B tank. Check the TurboTorch X-4B on Amazon

An acetylene torch kit is a torch handle, hose, regulator and tips that run off a refillable acetylene cylinder. Plumbers and HVAC techs use air-acetylene kits to sweat and braze copper that is too big for a hand torch. This guide compares TurboTorch kits by tank type, ignition and the maker’s soft-solder and silver-braze ratings, using TurboTorch’s catalogs and Victor’s oxy-fuel safety manual. The plumber behind this site uses RIDGID, Milwaukee, DeWalt and Viega/NIBCO tools on jobs. The specs below come from maker documents, not from testing these models.

Air-Acetylene vs Oxy-Acetylene vs MAPP

Air-acetylene

One acetylene tank, one regulator, one hose. The torch mixes the gas with air. TurboTorch rates these kits for soft soldering and silver brazing, and its biggest kits here reach 3-1/2 in. soft solder and 2 in. silver braze. This is the setup most plumbers mean by an acetylene torch kit (our judgment).

Oxy-acetylene

Two cylinders, oxygen and acetylene, with two regulators and a twin hose. Victor’s manual lists a neutral oxy-acetylene flame at 5,720°F. Oxy-fuel outfits add cutting and welding of steel. TurboTorch’s catalog lists Victor-made G150 J series tote outfits for light-duty brazing, cutting, heating and welding. The Victor G150-J-CP (0384-0947) includes G150 oxygen and fuel regulators, a tote case, a 12.5 ft. by 3/16 in. dual hose, a cutting attachment and tip, two welding nozzles and safety check valves, and no cylinders. The catalog lists it for cutting up to 1/4 in. steel and welding up to 5/64 in., or up to 5 in. and 1 in. with optional tips. On October 1 the only listing we found was a third-party seller. Plumber’s note: unless you cut or weld steel, an oxy-acetylene outfit is a second cylinder to rent, carry and leak-test for copper work that an air-acetylene kit already handles.

MAPP and propane hand torches

A hand torch screws onto a small disposable cylinder. TurboTorch lists its MAP-Pro cylinder at 14.1 oz and non-refillable. Its TX-504 hand torch is rated to soft solder 3/4 to 4 in. and silver braze 1/4 to 1-1/4 in. on MAP-Pro. That is plenty for most house water lines; it falls short of the X-4B’s 2 in. silver braze. For hand torches, see our best plumbing torch picks.

Before You Buy

  1. Pick the tank first. TurboTorch lists the B tank at 40 cu. ft. (CGA 520) and the MC at 10 cu. ft. (CGA 200). The regulator in the kit fits one or the other. Ask your gas supplier which sizes they fill or exchange before you buy the kit.
  2. Size the tip to your largest joint. Read the tip chart, not the box. Amazon’s title for the TurboTorch PL-5ADLX-MC (0386-0832) says it soft solders to 4 in. and silver brazes to 2 in. TurboTorch’s catalog lists that kit at 1-1/2 in. and 3/4 in. We went with the catalog and did not link it.
  3. Self-lighting or manual. Self-lighting kits (PL series) light with a trigger. Manual kits (X series) need a striker; the X-4B and X-3B carry two tips and reach larger pipe.
  4. Swirl or soft flame. TurboTorch’s Extreme tips use swirl combustion for fast, high heat. Its Sof-Flame kits are for “situations where Swirl Technology is too much,” and the WSF kits are rated to soft solder 1 in. We did not link the WSF-4: the one listing we found on October 1 was a third-party seller with 3 left.
  5. Know the draw limit. Victor’s oxy-fuel manual says no single acetylene cylinder should give up more than 1/7 of its contents per hour. By our arithmetic, that is about 5.7 cu. ft. per hour from a full B tank and about 1.4 from a full MC. TurboTorch’s tip chart lists gas flow at 14 psi of 5.7 SCFH for the A-5, 7 SCFH for the PL-8A and 14.5 SCFH for the A-14. By our arithmetic, the PL-8A and A-14 flows are above 1/7 of a full B tank, and the PL-8A flow is about five times 1/7 of a full MC tank. Neither document we read reconciles the two, and Victor says to use a manifold when more flow is needed. Ask your gas supplier how long you can run a given tip on a given tank before you start a long heat.
Top Pick: Best Acetylene Torch Kit for Most Plumbers

TurboTorch X-4B Air Acetylene Torch Kit (0386-0336)

Manual-light swirl kit · “B” tank connection · AR-B (CGA 520) regulator · G-4 handle · AH-12 hose · A-5 and A-14 tips · soft solders to 3-1/2 in. and silver brazes to 2 in., per TurboTorch

The X-4B is the kit to buy if you sweat and braze copper every week. TurboTorch’s catalog lists it to soft solder up to 3-1/2 in. and silver braze up to 2 in., the most of any kit here. It ships with two tips. The Amazon listing title says T-5/T-14 tips; its feature list and TurboTorch’s catalog say A-5 and A-14. TurboTorch’s tip chart lists the small A-5 for 3/4 to 1-1/2 in. soft solder and 1/4 to 3/4 in. silver braze, and the big A-14 for 2 to 3-1/2 in. soft solder and 1 to 2 in. silver braze. The tips use quick-disconnect couplings with color-coded O-rings, red for acetylene, and the valve sits at the rear of the G-4 handle.

It is a manual-light kit: you light it with a striker, not a trigger. TurboTorch calls this standard line the industry standard for decades, and it pairs the Extreme swirl technology with a manual-light torch. The regulator is the AR-B for a “B” acetylene tank, which TurboTorch lists at 40 cu. ft. The tank is not part of the kit. For smaller work, TurboTorch’s X-3B kit (0386-0335) uses the same regulator, handle and hose with A-3 and A-11 tips, rated to 3 in. soft solder and 1-5/8 in. silver braze. Plumber’s note: the A-14 is a big tip. Keep the A-5 on for 3/4 in. work and swap up when you get to 2 in. and larger copper.

  • Highest capacity here: 3-1/2 in. soft solder, 2 in. silver braze, per TurboTorch
  • Two tips cover 3/4 in. through 3-1/2 in. copper
  • Quick-disconnect tips with color-coded O-rings
  • B tank holds 4 times the gas of an MC tank (our arithmetic: 40 vs 10 cu. ft.)
  • Manual light: you need a striker
  • Tank not included; get one from a gas supplier
  • Linked listing is a third-party seller
  • A B tank is heavier to carry than an MC (our judgment)

Verdict: The acetylene kit to buy for copper water lines and refrigerant brazing up to 2 in.

Best Self-Lighting Acetylene Kit

TurboTorch PL-8ADLX-B Self-Lighting Torch Kit (0386-0835)

Self-lighting swirl kit · “B” tank connection · AR-B (CGA 520) regulator · G-4 handle · AH-12 hose · PL-8A tip · soft solders to 2 in. and silver brazes to 1 in., per TurboTorch

The PL-8ADLX-B lights with a trigger on the handle. That is the whole reason to buy it: one hand on the torch and no striker to find in a crawlspace. TurboTorch’s catalog lists it to soft solder up to 2 in. and silver braze up to 1 in. with the PL-8A tip. The tip chart puts the PL-8A at 1 to 2 in. soft solder, 1/2 to 1 in. silver braze and 7 SCFH of gas at 14 psi.

TurboTorch says its Extreme self-lighting kits come with gauge guards and a cylinder wrench, have quick-disconnect handles and replaceable tips, and come in valve-rear (PL) or valve-forward (PLF) versions. This one is valve-rear. The PL-8A tip has a removable orifice screw for cleaning, and TurboTorch sells a replacement tip end (8A-TE). If you mostly work 2 in. and smaller copper, this kit covers it with one tip (our reading of the tip chart). Plumber’s note: you give up the X-4B’s 3-1/2 in. reach. If you braze bigger line sets or sweat 3 in. copper, buy the X-4B.

  • Trigger lighting, no striker needed
  • 2 in. soft solder and 1 in. silver braze, per TurboTorch
  • Gauge guards and cylinder wrench included, per TurboTorch
  • Replaceable tip end and removable orifice screw
  • One tip only
  • Half the silver-braze reach of the X-4B (our arithmetic: 1 in. vs 2 in.)
  • Linked listing is a third-party seller

Verdict: The pick if you want trigger lighting and work 2 in. and smaller copper.

Best Kit for a Small MC Tank

TurboTorch PL-8ADLX-MC Self-Lighting Torch Kit (0386-0834)

Self-lighting swirl kit · “MC” tank connection · AR-MC (CGA 200) regulator · G-4 handle · AH-12 hose · PL-8A tip · soft solders to 2 in. and silver brazes to 1 in., per TurboTorch

Availability: On October 1, 2026, the Amazon listing for this kit showed 1 left from a third-party seller, which fails our seller and stock rules, so there is no buy link here. We re-check listings every week. This is the same self-lighting kit with an AR-MC regulator for the small “MC” acetylene tank. TurboTorch lists the MC cylinder at 10 cu. ft. with a CGA 200 connection, against 40 cu. ft. and CGA 520 for a B tank. The kit’s capacity does not change: 2 in. soft solder and 1 in. silver braze with the PL-8A tip, per TurboTorch’s catalog.

An MC tank is the light, carry-in option for service work and HVAC calls. The trade-off is gas. A B tank holds four times as much (our arithmetic from TurboTorch’s cylinder table), so you will swap an MC tank more often. Victor’s oxy-fuel manual also says no single acetylene cylinder should give up more than 1/7 of its contents per hour. By our arithmetic, the PL-8A tip’s listed 7 SCFH is about five times that rate on a full MC tank; see Before You Buy and ask your gas supplier before long heats. TurboTorch also packs this kit in its TDLX 2003MC tote outfit (0426-0011) with an A-5 tip and an MC tank tote.

  • Fits the small, light MC tank
  • Same 2 in. / 1 in. capacity as the B version, per TurboTorch
  • Trigger lighting
  • Gauge guards and cylinder wrench included, per TurboTorch
  • MC tank holds a quarter of a B tank (our arithmetic)
  • Regulator does not fit a B tank (different CGA fitting, per TurboTorch)
  • Not linked: on October 1 its Amazon listing showed 1 left from a third-party seller

Verdict: Buy it if you carry the tank up ladders and into attics, and your work is 2 in. and smaller.

Best Acetylene Kit With a Rolling Tote

TurboTorch TDLX 2010B Roller Tote Outfit (0386-0578)

Roller tote outfit for a “B” tank · AR-B regulator · G4 handle · AH-12 hose · PL-8A self-lighting tip and A-3 standard tip · tank key · tanks not included, per TurboTorch

The TDLX 2010B is a complete B-tank kit in a rolling tote. TurboTorch’s catalog lists a durable tote case, PL-8A and A-3 tips, a G4 handle, an AR-B regulator, an AH-12 hose and a tank key. Tanks are not included. The tote has wide-set wheels, a metal base, a telescoping pull handle, storage pockets, a metal sleeve for a hot tip and an adjustable vehicle security strap. TurboTorch says to lift it by the carry handle only.

You get one self-lighting tip and one manual-light tip. By TurboTorch’s tip chart, the PL-8A covers 1 to 2 in. soft solder and 1/2 to 1 in. silver braze, and the A-3 covers 1/4 to 1 in. soft solder and 1/8 to 1/2 in. silver braze. So the outfit tops out at 2 in. soft solder and 1 in. silver braze (our reading of the tip chart). The A-3 gives you a smaller flame for 1/2 in. work. Plumber’s note: a tote that keeps the tank upright and the hose coiled is worth having on a job where the torch moves room to room.

  • Rolling tote with pull handle and security strap
  • Self-lighting and manual tips in one outfit
  • A-3 tip for small copper
  • Tank key included, per TurboTorch
  • Tops out at 2 in. soft solder and 1 in. silver braze (our reading)
  • Tank not included
  • Linked listing is a third-party seller

Verdict: The pick if you want the whole B-tank setup in one rolling case.

Setting Up and Using an Acetylene Kit Safely

These rules come from Victor’s oxy-fuel set-up and safety manual. ESAB makes both Victor and TurboTorch, but this manual is written for oxy-fuel outfits; its acetylene cylinder rules apply to any acetylene tank. We could not open a TurboTorch air-acetylene manual, so read the instructions that ship with your kit too.

Cylinder. Keep acetylene cylinders upright, and chain or otherwise secure them to a wall, bench, post or cart so they cannot fall. Victor says acetylene becomes unstable when compressed above 15 psig, and lists 15 psig as the maximum use pressure. Open the acetylene cylinder valve about 3/4 turn and no more than 1-1/2 turns. Leave the cylinder wrench on the valve so you can shut it off fast. Never use oil or grease on any of the equipment.

Leak test. Test the system for leaks before you light the torch. Victor says never to test for leaks with a flame; use an approved leak-detector solution. If you find a leak, stop and have it repaired. Never tighten a cylinder valve. If the cylinder valve leaks, take the regulator off, put the cylinder outdoors and call your gas supplier.

Work area. Ventilate the work area so gas and fumes cannot build up, and read the safety data sheet for your brazing alloy and flux. Move combustibles away; Victor says sparks can travel 35 feet or more. Keep a fire extinguisher at hand. Victor says a fire watcher may be advisable, because the person at the torch may not see a fire start. When you finish, check the area for anything smoldering. Plumber’s note: in a finished house, shield the framing and wiring behind the joint, and check the wall again before you leave.

If your torch keeps blowing out or the solder will not take, see why your torch keeps going out and why solder will not flow. For the filler side, see our solder and flux picks, and if you are deciding whether to braze at all, read ProPress vs brazing.

Kits We Did Not Rank

Amazon sells air-acetylene and oxy-acetylene kits under VEVOR, LOOPHILL and other names, some described as “TurboTorch style.” We did not find maker manuals with tip ratings and safety rules for them, so we do not rank them. Hobart’s 770502 oxy-acetylene kit is sold by Amazon.com, but we could not open Hobart’s owner’s manual on October 1, so we left it out. Uniweld kits we found were third-party listings, most with low stock or multi-week lead times, and we did not open Uniweld documents for them.

FAQ

What is the best acetylene torch kit for plumbing?

For most plumbers, the TurboTorch X-4B. TurboTorch lists it to soft solder copper up to 3-1/2 in. and silver braze up to 2 in., with A-5 and A-14 tips and an AR-B regulator for a “B” tank. If you want trigger lighting and work 2 in. and smaller copper, the PL-8ADLX-B is the self-lighting choice.

What is the difference between a B tank and an MC tank?

Size and fitting. TurboTorch lists the “B” acetylene cylinder at 40 cu. ft. with a CGA 520 connection and the “MC” at 10 cu. ft. with a CGA 200 connection. The regulator must match the tank: AR-B for B, AR-MC for MC. A B tank holds four times the gas (our arithmetic); an MC is lighter to carry.

Does an acetylene torch kit come with a tank?

No. TurboTorch’s catalog lists its kits without a cylinder, says “tanks not included” on its TDLX outfits, and lists the acetylene cylinders as separate parts. Victor’s oxy-fuel manual says acetylene cylinders must be refilled only by authorized gas distributors and never transfilled. Get your tank from a welding gas supplier.

Is an acetylene kit better than a MAPP torch for brazing?

For larger copper, yes, by TurboTorch’s own numbers. Its TX-504 MAP-Pro hand torch is listed to silver braze 1/4 to 1-1/4 in. Its X-4B air-acetylene kit is listed to silver braze up to 2 in. For small soldering jobs a hand torch is lighter and simpler; see our best plumbing torch guide.

Can an air-acetylene torch cut steel?

TurboTorch rates its air-acetylene kits by soft-solder and silver-braze size, not for cutting. For cutting and welding steel you need an oxy-fuel outfit with a cutting attachment, such as Victor’s G150-J-CP, which TurboTorch’s catalog lists for light-duty cutting up to 1/4 in., or up to 5 in. with optional tips.

Bottom Line

The TurboTorch X-4B is the acetylene torch kit to buy for most plumbers: two tips, a B-tank regulator, and TurboTorch’s highest ratings here at 3-1/2 in. soft solder and 2 in. silver braze. The PL-8ADLX-B adds trigger lighting for 2 in. and smaller work, the PL-8ADLX-MC fits the small MC tank, and the TDLX 2010B puts a B-tank kit in a rolling tote. Buy an oxy-acetylene outfit only if you cut or weld steel. Whatever you buy, keep the tank upright and secured, and leak-test before you light.
