Quick answer from a licensed plumber: Measure the base cabinet first. Every pick here lists a 36 in. minimum, 3-1/4 to 4 in. wider than the sink (our arithmetic). For most kitchens with a stone or solid-surface counter, buy a 16 gauge stainless single bowl such as the Kraus KHU100-32. Most of the lifetime warranties we read stop at the first buyer, and several want an authorized seller or a receipt. Read those terms before you order.
Our take: most kitchens? The Kraus KHU100-32 stainless single bowl: Check the Kraus KHU100-32 on Amazon. A Kohler with racks? The Strive K-5285: Check the Kohler Strive K-5285 on Amazon. A double bowl? The Kraus KHU104-33: Check the Kraus KHU104-33 on Amazon. Granite composite? The Blanco PRECIS 443084: Check the Blanco 443084 on Amazon. Fireclay farmhouse? How to Size a Sink to Your Base Cabinet
Read the maker’s minimum cabinet width, not the sink length. Every pick here lists 36 in., which is 3-1/4 to 4 in. wider than the sink (our arithmetic). Kraus says its number “is to ensure there is enough space within the cabinet for the sink and the included mounting hardware.” Ruvati says a 33 in. sink in a 33 in. cabinet leaves “no room to adjust the sink if needed, making installation very difficult.”
- The margin is not fixed. Kraus’s manual pairs a 26 in. sink with a 30 in. cabinet, 28 in. and 30 in. sinks with 33 in., and a 32 in. sink with 36 in. That is 3 to 5 in. (our arithmetic).
- Front to back. Kraus lists 24 in. for the KHU100-32.
- Measure inside the cabinet at its narrowest point, past the face frame and any center stile (plumber’s note, not from a maker document).
- Drains differ. Kraus and Ruvati list 3-1/2 in. openings and Kohler lists 3-3/4 in., so match the strainer or disposal flange to your sink. See our basket strainer guide.
- Depth. These bowls run 8-3/4 to 10 in. deep. Check the room under the bowl for the trap and a disposal before you order (plumber’s note).
Kraus Standart PRO KHU100-32 32-Inch Undermount Sink
16 gauge stainless · 32 x 19 in. outside · 30 x 17 in. bowl, 10 in. deep · undermount · rear center drain, 3-1/2 in. opening · 36 in. minimum cabinet, 24 in. front to back · strainer, bottom grid, cutout template and hardware included · Kraus limited lifetime warranty
Kraus lists the KHU100-32 at 16 gauge with NoiseDefend pads and undercoating. Its Q&A puts the drain center 4-1/2 in. from the sink’s back wall. The sheet says 10 in. deep; the product page says 10-1/2 in. overall with a 10 in. bowl.
The listing is sold by Amazon.com, and Kraus’s where-to-buy page listed Amazon as a preferred online retailer when we saved it on September 28. Kraus’s warranty covers “the original purchaser” who buys “from a Kraus authorized dealer.” Kraus does not say whether that list makes Amazon an authorized dealer, so ask Kraus before you buy if the warranty matters.
- 16 gauge on both the spec sheet and the product page
- Strainer, bottom grid, template and hardware come in the kit
- Kraus posts the manual and DXF cutout files for a fabricator
- A 36 in. cabinet is enough, per Kraus
- Warranty is for the original purchaser, is non-transferable, and needs an authorized dealer
- Kraus says bleach, ammonia, steel wool and abrasive pads void the warranty
- Kraus does not recommend it for laminate
Verdict: The pick for most kitchens with a 36 in. base cabinet and a stone or solid-surface counter.
Kohler Strive K-5285 32-Inch Undermount Sink
16 gauge stainless · 32 x 18-5/16 x 9-5/16 in. outside · 30-1/4 x 16-9/16 in. bowl, 9 in. deep · undermount · rear drain, 3-3/4 in. hole · 36 in. minimum base cabinet · cutout template, hardware, sink rack and utility rack included · drain sold separately · Kohler lifetime limited warranty
Kohler’s buying guide says its stainless is “premium 18-gauge steel or better,” but the K-5285 sheet says 16 gauge. The guide says every Kohler stainless kitchen sink has SilentShield sound absorption. The 2020 revision of this sheet listed it; the 2024 revision we read does not.
The sheet lists a drain and strainer, or a disposal flange, under “Required Products/Accessories,” so add one to the order. The listing is sold by Amazon.com. Kohler’s current stainless sink warranty applies “only to products purchased from Kohler Co. or a Kohler Co. authorized seller” and asks for the “original sales receipt.” Kohler says to call it to check whether a seller is authorized.
- 16 gauge on the current spec sheet
- Sink rack and utility rack come with it
- Warranty term runs as long as the original buyer owns the home
- Cutout template is included and required, per Kohler
- No drain in the box
- Kohler says scratching, gloss reduction and staining “are not manufacturing defects”
- Warranty is for the original buyer and needs a Kohler authorized seller
Verdict: The pick if you want a Kohler stainless sink with racks, and you will buy the drain separately.
Kraus Standart PRO KHU104-33 Double Bowl Undermount Sink
16 gauge stainless · 32-3/4 x 19 in. outside · bowls 16-7/8 x 17 in. and 12-7/8 x 17 in., 10 in. deep · undermount · two rear center drains, 3-1/2 in. openings · 36 in. minimum cabinet · two strainers, two bottom grids, template and hardware included · Kraus limited lifetime warranty
Kraus calls this a 60/40 split in the title and on the sheet, and a 40/60 split in one page bullet. The sheet drawing puts the smaller bowl on the left. Kraus says a disposal replaces the drain in a bowl and mounts with its own flange.
The listing is sold by Amazon.com. The warranty is the same Kraus kitchen sink warranty as above.
- Separate rinse bowl, with the larger bowl 16-7/8 in. wide
- A strainer and a bottom grid for each bowl
- Same 16 gauge and 36 in. cabinet as the single bowl
- The larger bowl is 16-7/8 in. wide, against a 30 in. bowl on the KHU100-32
- Two drains mean a trap kit and more plumbing (plumber’s note, not from a maker document)
- Kraus does not recommend it for laminate
Verdict: The pick if you rinse in a second bowl or want a disposal on one side, and can live with a narrower main bowl.
Blanco PRECIS Super Single 443084 Silgranit Undermount Sink
Silgranit granite composite, Soft White · 32 x 19 in. outside · 30 x 17 in. bowl, 9-1/2 in. deep · undermount · rear-positioned drain · 36 in. minimum cabinet · cutout template and instructions included · strainer and undermount clips sold separately · Blanco limited lifetime warranty
Blanco says the PRECIS is made of Silgranit, “premium granite composite,” made in Canada and Germany, and that it handles “heavy cookware, hot bakeware and scuff marks.” Its warranty page excludes “wear and tear, including chips, scratches and stains that can occur under normal use.” Read both.
Blanco’s spec sheet lists undermount clips and strainers as optional accessories, and the Amazon listing says the strainer and clips are sold separately, so budget for them. The listing is sold by Amazon.com.
- Spec sheet lists CSA B45.8-18 / IAPMO Z403-2018
- Blanco posts a downloadable cutout template, 30 x 17 in.
- Blanco’s warranty page lists its conditions in three lines
- Strainer and clips are extra
- Warranty excludes chips, scratches and stains from normal use
- Not transferable without Blanco’s written consent
Verdict: The pick if you want a granite composite bowl and will read the warranty exclusions before you buy.
Ruvati RVL2300 33-Inch Reversible Fireclay Farmhouse Sink
Fireclay, 1 in. thick · 32-3/4 x 20-1/4 x 10-1/4 in. outside · 30-3/4 x 18-1/4 in. bowl, 8-3/4 in. deep (Ruvati’s sheet) · apron front, reversible · center drain, 3-1/2 in. · 36 in. minimum cabinet · strainer and rinse grid included · no cutout template · Ruvati limited lifetime warranty
Ruvati’s installation guide covers the RVL2300. It says no cutout template comes with the sink and an experienced cabinet maker should use the actual sink, on a 2×4 frame “strong enough to hold up to 200 lbs.” Plan cabinet work, not a swap.
Ruvati’s product page says: “Completely resistant to chips, abrasion or scratches on all sides.” The guide warns that a pot bottom can pass 600°F and “can cause permanent damage,” and says never to let drain cleaners touch the sink. The listing is sold by RUVATI, the maker’s Amazon storefront.
- Strainer and rinse grid are in the box, per the sheet
- Reversible: one side flat, one fluted, per Ruvati
- Ruvati names the frame load and reveal (1/4 in. recommended)
- No cutout template and cabinet work required
- Ruvati says the sink may need an extended disposal flange
- Warranty is residential only, original purchaser only, and Ruvati may inspect the installation first
Verdict: The pick for a farmhouse look, if you will pay a cabinet maker and follow the care rules.

Single Bowl or Double Bowl
Kohler says single bowls are “ideal for washing large pots and platters” and that offset bowls give “space and separation for washing and rinsing.” Our reading: pick the single if you wash big pans by hand, and a double if you want a rinse bowl or a disposal on one side. A double bowl costs bowl width. On the two Kraus sinks here, a bowl is 30 in. wide as a single but 16-7/8 in. as the larger half of the KHU104-33.
Stainless Gauge: 16 vs 18
A lower number is thicker steel. Ruvati lists 16 gauge at 0.063 in. and 18 gauge at 0.047 in., and says the thicker sink resists dents and dampens noise. Elkay lists 16 gauge at 0.058 in. and 18 gauge at 0.046 in., and says gauge “does not change the quality of the steel.” So “16” is not one thickness across brands. Kohler says its stainless is “18-gauge steel or better,” while the K-5285 sheet says 16. Kraus prints “Sink Gauge: 16.” Compare gauge within one maker. Ruvati suggests 16 gauge for a sink that sees heavy use.
Stainless, Granite Composite or Fireclay, Briefly
- Stainless. Kohler: “incredibly rust- and stain-resistant.” Elkay and Kohler exclude dents and scratches from their warranties.
- Granite composite. Ruvati says its RVG2302 is “80% crushed natural granite.” Blanco says Silgranit handles “heavy cookware, hot bakeware and scuff marks,” yet excludes chips and scratches. Kohler says its Neoroc composite is “scratch-, stain-, and chip-resistant.”
- Fireclay. Ruvati fires its fireclay at 2,900°F and makes it 1 in. thick, but tells owners never to set a hot pot on it, or bleach or drain cleaner in it. It needs a support frame and cabinet work.
Makers disagree on care. Elkay allows a 50/50 water and bleach solution for hard stains on its fireclay, and Kraus’s care guide gives a bleach soak for its fireclay, while Kohler says cleaners containing chloride are not recommended on its stainless. Our stainless vs granite composite vs fireclay comparison sets out each maker’s heat, scratch, cleaner and warranty rules.
Mounting and the Countertop Cutout
Kohler says undermounts “install with solid-surface, stone, and quartz countertops” and that top-mounts are commonly installed with laminate. Our undermount vs drop-in guide has the detail and a drop-in pick.
- Undermount. Kraus ships a paper template with three reveal choices and recommends a 3/8 in. positive reveal. Its steps drill 3/8 in. holes, 1/2 in. deep, set anchors and bed the sink in silicone. Elkay uses a 1/2 in. reveal or a 1/8 in. no-reveal cutout and says the fabricator should cut it. Blanco’s template shows a 30 x 17 in. cutout. Kohler includes and requires its template.
- Drop-in. Elkay says to trace the upside-down sink, draw a line 5/16 in. inside it, and cut on the inside line, with clips about 3 in. from each end.
- Farmhouse. Ruvati sends no template and calls for a support frame and a cabinet maker. Kohler says an apron front replaces the drawer front over the sink.

| Swanstone (Swan) | Solid surface and granite kitchen sinks | No: listings seen were third-party or low stock |
These are the terms in the documents we read. The headline is the same: a lifetime warranty. The conditions differ.
- Kraus stainless: lifetime “for as long as the original purchaser resides in the residence”; only when “purchased from a Kraus authorized dealer”; bleach, ammonia, powders, steel wool and abrasive pads “will void this warranty.”
- Kohler stainless: lifetime while “the original consumer purchaser owns their home”; “only to products purchased from Kohler Co. or a Kohler Co. authorized seller”; “original sales receipt” required; “Improper care and cleaning will void the warranty.”
- Blanco: lifetime in single-family homes (5 years rental, 3 years commercial); “Proof of purchase; Original owner in original location installed”; excludes “chips, scratches and stains that can occur under normal use.”
- Ruvati: lifetime, residential, “original purchaser only”; “valid proof of purchase showing the date and place of purchase”; excludes “Normal wear and tear, scratches or accidental damage.”
- Elkay stainless: lifetime of residential use for “the original purchaser”; “copy of original dated invoice”; excludes “normal wear including dents and scratches”; waste fittings and accessories 1 year.
- Franke: “expected lifetime of the sink,” original purchaser only; “purchased from Franke or a Franke Authorized Retailer”; excludes “normal wear such as scuffs, scratches or finish reduction/fading.”
- Swanstone (Swan): limited lifetime “so long as it remains in use in its original place of installation”; names no buyer; repair or exchange “after inspection by an authorized Swan representative.”
Kohler’s wording comes from its Stainless Steel Sinks Lifetime Limited Warranty (updated September 9, 2025); its older homeowner’s guide (1209809-5-A) has no seller rule. Kraus’s web page also leaves out discontinued or display sinks bought at “discount outlets, unauthorized dealers, and/or sold on clearance.” Kraus’s installation manual words its warranty differently (“for the lifetime of the product”) and says it “does not apply unless the Kraus product is installed by a fully insured and licensed trade professional”; the web page only recommends one. We quote the web page above. Elkay also has an older residential sinks sheet that says waste fittings and accessories are not warranted.
Before You Buy
- Measure the inside cabinet width, then match it to the maker’s minimum.
- Check the counter. Undermounts need a stone or solid-surface counter and a fabricator; laminate means a drop-in. Farmhouse sinks need cabinet work.
- List what is not in the box: Kohler’s drain, Blanco’s strainer and clips, and a disposal flange if you have a disposer. See our garbage disposal guide.
- Keep the receipt, model number and seller name. Warranties ask for proof of purchase.
- Do not use bleach, ammonia or steel wool unless the maker says it is safe; several warranties treat them as misuse.
When to Call a Pro
- Cutting the countertop. Elkay says the cutout and mounting holes should be cut by the countertop fabricator, and Kraus recommends hiring a licensed professional, and its manual says the warranty needs one. Kraus says to use the saw that fits your countertop material.
- Undermount support. Kraus says laminate and tile have “too many weak points along seams and grout lines to support the weight of the sink.” Ruvati wants a frame for 200 lbs under a fireclay sink.
- Replumbing. A new drain, trap and supply lines are where leaks start. See kitchen sink leaking underneath and cost to replace a garbage disposal. Have a plumber reconnect the dishwasher drain with a high loop or air gap (plumber’s note; see air gap vs high loop).
FAQ
What is the best kitchen sink material?
No maker shows one winner. Blanco says Silgranit handles “heavy cookware, hot bakeware and scuff marks” but excludes chips and scratches. Kohler says stainless is “less likely than other sink materials to damage delicate dishware.” Ruvati warns that fireclay can be damaged by pots over 600°F. Our reading: stainless has the most sizes and the least cabinet work. Composite adds color choices (Blanco lists eight for the PRECIS Super Single). Fireclay adds cabinet work.
Is a 16 gauge sink better than 18 gauge?
Ruvati says 16 gauge resists dents better and is quieter. Elkay says 16 to 18 gauge is typical for homes and that gauge “does not change the quality of the steel.” The makers also disagree on what each number means, so use the maker’s gauge as a label and compare sinks from one maker.
What size base cabinet do I need for a 33-inch sink?
Read the sheet for your model. Every pick here lists 36 in. Kraus’s manual pairs a 30 in. sink with a 33 in. cabinet and a 32 in. sink with a 36 in. cabinet. Ruvati says a 33 in. sink in a 33 in. cabinet leaves “no room to adjust the sink.”
Does a sink warranty cover a second owner, or a sink bought on Amazon?
The lifetime warranties we read stop at the first buyer, except Swan’s residential text, which names no buyer. Kraus, Kohler, Blanco, Ruvati, Elkay and Franke all ask for proof of purchase, and Kraus, Kohler and Franke also require an authorized seller. An Amazon listing does not say whether a seller is authorized, so if the warranty matters, ask the maker before you buy, and keep the receipt and the model number.
Can I put an undermount sink in a laminate countertop?
Makers say no. Kraus’s manual says “Not recommended to be installed with laminate countertop.” Elkay says undermounts should be fastened only to solid surface. Kohler says undermounts install with solid-surface, stone and quartz. For laminate, see our undermount vs drop-in guide.

Bottom Line
Pick the sink your cabinet and counter allow, then read the warranty: who is covered, where you must buy, and what voids it. Get the cutout and any cabinet work done by a fabricator or cabinet maker, and keep the receipt.
