Quick answer from a licensed plumber: Pick the material by how you cook and clean, not by looks. Stainless: Kohler, Elkay and Kraus call scratches normal and warn off chloride cleaners. Granite composite: Blanco says oven-hot pans are fine, but Kraus says use a trivet. Fireclay: Elkay says it can chip or crack, and wants a frame that carries about 300 lb. Enameled cast iron is the heavy alternative from Kohler. The table and the material sections below show who said what.
Our pick for most kitchens with a stone or solid-surface counter: 16-gauge stainless, the Kohler Strive K-5285 (our reading: it has no hot-pan warning and no support frame to build). Check the Kohler Strive K-5285 on Amazon
Makers do not describe stainless, composite and fireclay sinks the same way. Blanco calls its material a granite composite, Kraus calls its sinks granite and quartz composite, and Elkay calls them quartz. Each says the stone is blended with acrylic. Every statement below is a named maker’s; none of it comes from hands-on testing. Where a maker says nothing, the table says so, and model-specific statements name the model.

What the Makers Say, by Material
Stainless Steel
- Scratches: Kraus: scratches from normal use are common and blend into the finish. Elkay: light scratches are normal. Kohler: its warranty calls scratching normal wear.
- Heat limit: No temperature in the Kraus, Kohler or Elkay stainless documents we read. Elkay: run cold water when pouring boiling water into the sink.
- Stains: Elkay: do not leave standing water, especially with coffee or tea. Kraus (KHU100-32 questions): red spots are usually iron and mineral deposits from the water; its care guide lists Bar Keepers Friend for rust. Kohler: do not leave staining materials on the surface.
- Chips, cracks, dents: The stainless documents talk about dents, not chips. Kohler and Elkay warranties exclude dents and scratches. Kraus (KHU100-32): great resistance to corrosion, dents and damage.
- Weight and support: No weight or support load in the stainless documents we read. Elkay: fasten undermounts only to a solid surface counter. Kraus: undermounts suit solid surfaces, not laminate, whose seams have too many weak points to support the sink’s weight.
- Noise: Kraus (KHU100-32): sound-dampening pads and undercoating. Elkay (Crosstown): sprayed sides and bottom plus pads. Kohler (K-5285 page): a built-in sound-absorption system.
- Cleaners to avoid: Kraus: no abrasive powders, bleach, ammonia, alcohol or chlorine; no pads, steel wool or wire brushes. Elkay: no steel wool; no bleach or ammonia (if used, rinse at once). Kohler: chloride cleaners not recommended; no brush or scouring pad.
Granite and Quartz Composite
- Scratches: Blanco: scuff marks from knives and heavy pots do not stand a chance; a metal mark is metal worn off onto the sink. Kraus (KGU-413B): great resistance to scratches, but steel wool and abrasive pads will damage the surface. Elkay (Quartz Classic spec sheet): superior scratch resistance.
- Heat limit: Kraus (KGU-413B): 500°F in the feature list, 600 degrees in the questions; hot items straight from the stove or oven may cause discoloration, so use a trivet. Blanco: boiling water and oven-hot pans are fine; no heat limit printed. Elkay (Quartz Classic spec sheet): superior heat resistance; its quartz care sheet says run cold water with boiling water.
- Stains: Blanco: non-porous and stain-resistant; most stains are discoloration stuck to limescale; paint left over 24 hours and rubber-coated mats can mark it. Kraus: pots or standing water left in the sink may cause rust stains. Elkay: dirty dishes or coffee grounds can hurt the color.
- Chips, cracks, dents: Blanco (the 443071 listing): chip and impact resistant; Blanco’s warranty excludes chips, scratches and stains from normal wear. Kraus (KGU-413B): great resistance to impact.
- Weight and support: No sink weight in the Blanco, Kraus or Elkay documents we read. Blanco: an undermount needs a strong, sturdy countertop material. Elkay: fasten only to a solid surface counter.
- Noise: Kraus (KGU-413B): naturally sound-absorbing. Elkay (Quartz Classic): naturally sound deadening. Nothing about sound in the Blanco pages we read.
- Cleaners to avoid: Kraus: no abrasive powders, bleach, ammonia, alcohol or chlorine. Blanco: no strong abrasives, metal pads or steel wool, but it gives a bleach-and-water soak for food stains. Elkay: no steel wool; use its listed cleaners only occasionally.
Fireclay
- Scratches: Kraus (Turino): resists scratches from daily use, but strong abrasive pads may scratch and dull it. Elkay: strong abrasive pads will scratch and dull it.
- Heat limit: Kraus (Turino pages): heat resistant up to 300°F; its care guide says not to place hot items from the stove or oven directly in the sink. Elkay: do not set hot pans directly in the sink.
- Stains: Kraus: extremely stain resistant and rust-proof, but do not leave coffee grounds or tea bags on it. Elkay (SWUF3320WH spec sheet): the glaze resists staining; its fireclay care sheet says not to leave standing water with coffee or tea.
- Chips, cracks, dents: Elkay: can be chipped or cracked by metal or stone objects; never drop anything in. Kraus (Turino page): helps protect the glaze from cracking and crazing. Whitehaus: chips and cracks from misuse or bad installation are not claimable.
- Weight and support: Elkay: the support frame must carry 300 lb, the approximate weight of the sink when full; fireclay sinks are heavy. Kraus: the built supports must carry the sink; floor and wall preparation may be needed.
- Noise: Kraus (Turino): naturally sound dampening. Elkay (SWUF3320WH): naturally sound deadening.
- Cleaners to avoid: Kraus: no scouring powders, steel cleaners or concentrated drain cleaners; a bleach and hot water soak is allowed. Elkay: 50/50 bleach solution for hard stains, never left sitting in the sink.
Enameled Cast Iron (Kohler)
- Scratches: Kohler: pots and utensils leave metal marks that look like scratches but do not penetrate the enamel. Its warranty calls scratching normal wear.
- Heat limit: Kohler: the guides we read give no temperature. Its warranty says the enamel will not “chip, crack or burn” (conditions below).
- Stains: Kohler: rubber dish mats are not recommended, because bacteria under them can permanently discolor the enamel, and the warranty does not cover it.
- Chips, cracks, dents: Kohler (warranty): enameled cast iron will not chip, crack or burn while the original purchaser owns the home; misuse and abuse are not covered.
- Weight and support: Kohler (K-5827 guide): build a frame that supports at least 300 lb; cast iron sinks are heavy, get help lifting; trained installers are recommended for undermounts.
- Noise: Not stated in the Kohler guides and spec sheet we read.
- Cleaners to avoid: Kohler: test any cleaner first; do not let cleaners soak; no brush or scouring pad; no rubber mats.
Where the Makers Disagree
- Bleach. Blanco gives a bleach soak for stains on composite, and Elkay gives one for fireclay. Kraus lists bleach to avoid on its composite, allows a soak on fireclay in its care guide, and lists bleach among cleaners that void its sink warranties. On a Kraus fireclay sink, skip bleach until Kraus confirms in writing that its soak does not void the warranty (our advice).
- Composite heat. Blanco says oven-hot pans are fine. Kraus says use a trivet, and prints 500°F and 600 degrees on the same KGU-413B page.
- Kraus fireclay. The KFR1D-33GWH page says 36 inches and five years, and its manual says five years. Its spec sheet says 33 inches and lifetime.
- Gauge inches. Elkay lists 16 gauge as 0.058 in. and 18 as 0.046 in. Ruvati lists 0.063 in. and 0.047 in. The same numbers are not the same steel across makers.
Stainless Gauge: Lower Is Thicker
Gauge is the steel thickness, and a lower number is thicker. Elkay says 16 to 18 gauge is typical for residential sinks and 20 to 22 gauge is used in its Dayton and Kingsford lines. Elkay also says a different gauge does not change the quality of the steel. Ruvati says 16 gauge resists dents and dampens noise better than 18. Our undermount vs drop-in guide covers 16 versus 18 with Ruvati’s numbers. These are the gauges the makers list.
| Sink | Gauge | Where listed |
|---|---|---|
| Kohler K-5285 | 16 | Spec sheet |
| Kraus KHU100-32 | 16 | Spec sheet |
| Elkay Crosstown EFRU311610T | 16 | Spec sheet |
| Elkay Crosstown ECTRU30179RT | 18 | Spec sheet |
| Ruvati stainless collection | 16 (says it has no 18-gauge sinks) | Ruvati gauge page |
Fireclay vs Enameled Cast Iron
Elkay says its fireclay sinks are molded from fine fireclay with a porcelain glaze. Kraus says its Turino is fine fireclay with a thick porcelain enamel fired in a kiln. Kohler sells enameled cast iron. Three differences are on paper:
- Support. Elkay puts the fireclay load at 300 lb full. Kohler asks for a frame that holds at least 300 lb for its cast iron undermounts, and calls the K-5827 a sink for a 33-inch apron base cabinet.
- Cutout. Kohler includes templates for the K-5827. Kraus and Elkay ship no template for fireclay, because size varies, and tell you to cut the counter from the actual sink.
- Warranty. Kohler and Elkay both give a lifetime term with care conditions. Kraus says five years on its page and manual, but lifetime on the KFR1D-33GWH spec sheet. Of the makers we read, only Kohler says its finish will not chip, crack or burn.
Warranties and Their Conditions
Terms below are for residential use. Each ties coverage to how you clean the sink.
| Maker and material | Term | Conditions in the document |
|---|---|---|
| Kohler stainless | For as long as the original purchaser owns the home (sinks made after Oct. 24, 2012) | Only for sinks bought from Kohler or a Kohler authorized seller; improper care and cleaning voids it; proof of purchase; dents and scratches after installation not covered; commercial use gets 1 year. |
| Elkay stainless | Lifetime of normal residential use | Original purchaser; undermounts only in a solid surface counter; excludes aggressive and abrasive cleaners and improper care; does not include labor. |
| Kraus stainless and granite (“Kitchen Sink”) | As long as the original purchaser lives in the home | Original purchaser, authorized Kraus dealer, original location; abrasive cleaners (powders, bleach, ammonia, alcohol, chlorine) and abrasive pads void it; excludes products that were discontinued or display items when bought. |
| Blanco SILGRANIT | Limited lifetime (single-family homes); 5 years for rental and multi-residential; 3 years commercial | Proof of purchase; original owner, in the original location; installed, used and cleaned as recommended; excludes chips, scratches and stains from normal wear. |
| Elkay quartz | Lifetime of normal residential use | Original purchaser; farmhouse and undermount only in granite, quartz, hardwood or solid surface counters; excludes improper care, aggressive and abrasive cleaners, and discontinued or display products. |
| Elkay fireclay | Lifetime of normal residential use | Original purchaser; solid surface counters, residential only; excludes improper care, aggressive and abrasive cleaners, and discontinued or display products. |
| Kraus fireclay | Five years (page and manual); the KFR1D-33GWH spec sheet says lifetime | Original purchaser, authorized dealer; bleach and abrasive cleaners void it, though the care guide allows a bleach soak. |
| Whitehaus fireclay | Limited warranty, plus 10 years against fading and staining of the glaze | Chips and cracks from misuse, damage or improper installation not claimable; improper cleaning is the buyer’s responsibility; receipt required. |
| Kohler enameled cast iron | For as long as the original purchaser owns the home | Will not chip, crack or burn; improper care and cleaning voids it; original receipt; rubber-mat discoloration not covered. |
Kraus requires a purchase from an authorized Kraus dealer, and Elkay excludes discontinued and display fireclay and quartz sinks bought at discount outlets or online. Kohler’s current stainless sink warranty (updated September 9, 2025) applies “only to products purchased from Kohler Co. or a Kohler Co. authorized seller,” and Kohler may reject claims for products bought from “unauthorized internet sites.” Kraus’s where-to-buy page lists Amazon as a preferred online retailer, but it does not say whether that makes Amazon an authorized dealer under its warranty, and an Amazon listing does not say whether a seller is authorized by Kohler, so if the warranty matters to you, ask the maker before you buy.
Which to Buy for How You Use the Sink
- Hot pans, fewest rules: stainless carries no heat warning in the documents we read, apart from Elkay’s cold-water tip. Its rules are about chloride cleaners (our reading).
- A quieter sink: composite or fireclay. Kraus and Elkay call both materials naturally sound-absorbing or sound deadening, while their stainless sinks add pads or spray coatings. On hot pans, Blanco says oven-hot pans are fine and Kraus says use a trivet, so follow the sheet for the composite sink you buy.
- Farmhouse look and a cabinet you can rebuild: fireclay, with a support frame for about 300 lb (Elkay) and a template-free cutout.
- Laminate counters: Kraus, Elkay and Blanco steer undermounts to solid surface; see our undermount vs drop-in guide. For a ledge, see our workstation sink roundup.

Kohler Strive K-5285 32-Inch Stainless Undermount Sink
16-gauge stainless steel · 32 in. x 18-5/16 in. · single bowl, 9 in. deep · 36 in. minimum base cabinet · rear drain · sink rack and utility shelf · Kohler K-5285-NA
Kohler’s spec sheet says this sink is handcrafted from 16-gauge stainless steel and lists a 36-inch minimum base cabinet. The box holds the sink, a sink rack, installation hardware and a cutout template, per Kohler’s page, which also lists a utility shelf with a dishcloth bar. Kohler lists the drain and strainer as separate required products, so buy one with it.
Kohler’s stainless guide says not to use cleaners containing chloride, and never to use a brush or scouring pad. Its current warranty runs while the original purchaser owns the home, applies only to sinks bought from Kohler or a Kohler authorized seller, and says improper care and cleaning voids it. Kohler says to call it to check whether a seller is authorized. Neither the spec sheet nor the page gives a weight.
- 16-gauge steel, per Kohler’s spec sheet
- Sink rack and utility shelf included, per Kohler
- Template and installation hardware included, per Kohler
- Kohler’s page mentions a built-in sound-absorption system
- Lifetime limited warranty for the original purchaser, per Kohler (authorized seller and other conditions apply)
- Drain and strainer are separate required parts, per Kohler’s spec sheet
- Needs a 36-inch base cabinet
- Kohler’s guide says chloride cleaners are not recommended, and improper care voids the warranty
- No weight on the sheet or page we read
Verdict: The stainless pick when you have a stone or solid-surface counter and a 36-inch cabinet, and you will follow Kohler’s cleaner rules.
Blanco Diamond Super Single 443071 Silgranit Undermount Sink
SILGRANIT granite composite · Diamond Super Single, SKU 443071 (Soft White) · undermount · 33.5 in. x 18.5 in. (listing) · 36 in. minimum cabinet · cutout template and instructions in the box · Blanco
Blanco says SILGRANIT is a patented granite composite of up to 80% natural granite blended with acrylic. It says the material withstands boiling water, hot pots off the stove and sheet pans straight from the oven, and prints no heat limit on the pages we read. Blanco’s spec sheet lists the Diamond Super Single in Soft White as SKU 443071, with a 36-inch minimum cabinet and a cutout template and instructions in the box. The listing says the basket strainer is sold separately.
Blanco’s care page says not to use strong abrasive cleaners, metal scrub pads or steel wool, and not to leave paint in the sink. The warranty needs the original owner, the original location and cleaning as recommended, and it excludes chips, scratches and stains from normal wear.
- Blanco says it handles boiling water and oven-hot pans
- Metal marks come off with mild detergent or oil, per Blanco
- Spec sheet lists a 36-inch minimum cabinet and a template in the box
- Limited lifetime warranty for single-family homes, per Blanco
- Blanco prints no heat limit on the pages we read
- Basket strainer is sold separately, per the listing
- Warranty excludes chips, scratches and stains from normal wear
Verdict: The granite composite pick for a solid-surface counter and a 36-inch cabinet, from a maker that says oven-hot pans are fine.
Kraus Turino KFR1D-33GWH Fireclay Farmhouse Sink
Fireclay, gloss white · 33 in. x 18-3/8 in. x 10 in. · double bowl with low divider · reversible apron front · 36 in. minimum cabinet (page) or 33 in. (spec sheet) · drain assembly included · no cutout template · Kraus
Kraus says the Turino is made in Italy from fine fireclay finished with a thick porcelain enamel, and that the apron can face forward flat or rounded. Its page says heat resistant up to 300°F, while its care guide says not to put hot items from the stove or oven directly in the sink. Kraus ships no template, because fireclay varies, and tells you to give the cabinet maker the actual sink. Its manual says the built supports must carry the sink.
Kraus’s documents disagree on this model in two places. The product page and the installation manual give a five-year warranty, while the spec sheet says lifetime. The page gives a 36-inch minimum cabinet, and the spec sheet says 33 inches. Plan for a 36-inch cabinet and five years of coverage unless Kraus confirms more in writing. Kraus also requires a purchase from an authorized dealer; its where-to-buy page lists Amazon as a preferred online retailer but does not say whether that counts, so ask Kraus before you buy if the warranty matters. Kraus gives no weight or support load for this sink; Elkay puts its own fireclay sinks at about 300 lb when full, so we would build the frame for at least that.
- Reversible apron, flat or rounded, per Kraus
- Kraus says heat resistant up to 300°F and not prone to cracking from thermal shock
- Stainless drain assembly with strainer included, per Kraus
- Kraus calls the material naturally sound dampening
- Kraus’s page and manual say five years; the spec sheet says lifetime
- Cabinet minimum is 36 in. on the page and 33 in. on the spec sheet
- No cutout template; needs a custom farmhouse cabinet and a support frame
- Kraus’s warranty lists bleach as voiding it, though its care guide allows a bleach-and-water soak
Verdict: The fireclay pick when you are building the cabinet for a farmhouse front and will get the warranty terms from Kraus first.

Before You Buy
- Measure the cabinet. All three picks list a 36-inch minimum base cabinet on the maker’s page or sheet.
- Read the care sheet for your exact sink before you buy a cleaner.
- Buy the drain. Kohler lists a drain as required for the K-5285, and Blanco’s listing sells the basket strainer separately. See our kitchen sink basket strainers guide.
- Match the faucet to the holes. See our kitchen faucet hole size guide and our kitchen faucet guide.
FAQ
Is a granite composite sink better than stainless?
Neither wins on every point. Stainless makers call scratches normal wear, Kohler and Elkay warranties do not cover dents, and Kohler does not recommend chloride cleaners. Composite makers describe hot-pan and scratch resistance, but Kraus says use a trivet and Blanco does not. Match the table to how you cook and clean.
Can I put a hot pan in a composite sink?
Makers disagree. Blanco says hot pots off the stove and sheet pans from the oven do not harm SILGRANIT. Kraus says its composite is highly heat resistant, but hot items straight from the stove or oven may cause discoloration, and to use a trivet. Its KGU-413B page prints 500°F in the feature list and 600 degrees in its questions. To protect a composite sink either way, use a trivet, as Kraus advises.
Is fireclay the same as enameled cast iron?
No. Elkay says its fireclay sinks are molded from fine fireclay with a porcelain glaze. Kohler makes an enameled cast iron sink, with an enamel layer over a cast iron body. Elkay’s fireclay sheet and Kohler’s cast iron undermount guide each set the support frame load at 300 pounds. Kohler’s warranty says its enamel will not chip, crack or burn; Elkay says fireclay can chip or crack.
What gauge should a stainless kitchen sink be?
Elkay says 16 to 18 gauge is typical for residential sinks, and a lower number is thicker steel. Kohler’s K-5285 and Kraus’s KHU100-32 are 16 gauge, and Elkay’s Crosstown comes in 16 and 18. Ruvati says thicker steel resists dents and noise better. Makers print different inches for each gauge, so compare the gauge number.
Can I use bleach on my kitchen sink?
It depends on the material and the maker. Kraus, Elkay and Kohler warn against bleach or chloride on stainless. Blanco gives a bleach soak for food stains on SILGRANIT, while Kraus lists bleach to avoid on its composite. Elkay allows a 50/50 bleach solution on fireclay for hard stains, never left in the sink. Check the sheet for your exact sink.

Bottom Line
Stainless, composite and fireclay each come with rules from the maker, and the makers do not agree with each other. Stainless is the plain choice for a stone counter and a 36-inch cabinet. Composite suits heavy pot work if you follow your maker on hot pans and bleach. Fireclay needs a built frame and a cabinet plan. Check the care sheet and warranty for your exact sink before you buy a cleaner or a pan rack. For sizing and one pick per need, see best kitchen sinks.
