A portable flushing toilet has two tanks: a fresh water tank on top for flushing and a sealed waste tank below that you detach and carry to a toilet or dump station to empty. They are used in camping, vans, boats, cabins without plumbing, and sometimes in homes during a remodel or for someone with limited mobility. Thetford, maker of the Porta Potti line, says no electricity is required: units flush with batteries or a manual pump.

How many flushes before emptying?

Thetford’s support pages give averages: the fresh water indicator covers about 56 flushes, and the waste indicator shows when to empty after about 27 to 33 flushes depending on the model. A larger waste tank means fewer trips to empty but a heavier tank to carry: 5.5 gallons of waste is heavy, so make sure whoever empties it can lift and carry it safely.

Thetford also notes the waste tank will not freeze unless the temperature drops below 0°F, according to its FAQ (thetford.com).

Electric, piston or bellows flush?

An electric flush like the 565E uses batteries and a button, which is easiest for anyone with weak hands. A piston pump, like the 365 and 345, is pushed by hand and needs no batteries. A bellows flush, as described for the Camco, is pumped by pressing a bellows. Thetford recommends removing batteries during storage or long periods of non-use.

Seat height and stability

Seat height matters more than most buyers expect. Thetford lists 17.44 inches for the 565E, close to a home comfort-height toilet, 16.06 inches for the 365 and 12.75 inches for the compact 345. For older adults or anyone who has trouble standing up, choose a taller unit, place it on a flat floor, and consider a grab bar or support nearby.

Using a portable toilet at home

Portable toilets are not only for camping. They can fill in during a bathroom remodel, in a basement or garage workshop with no bathroom, or at a cabin before the plumbing is finished. In a home, place the toilet on a flat, easy-to-clean floor, keep it near a regular toilet for emptying, and keep the fresh tank topped up so flushes clear the bowl. A taller unit like the 565E is easier to use for adults who are used to a standard toilet.

Storage and travel

Thetford lists a lid latch on these models to keep the toilet closed while it moves. Empty and rinse the waste tank before storing the toilet, follow the storage steps in Thetford’s owner’s manual, and remove batteries from electric models as Thetford recommends. Amazon lists a Thetford carrying bag (299901) that fits the 365 and 565E, which keeps the unit clean in a vehicle or closet.

Emptying and cleaning

Empty the waste tank into a toilet or an RV dump station, never on the ground. Thetford lists a rotating pour-out spout on the 345; rotate the spout toward the bowl, open the vent if your model has one, and pour slowly. Rinse the tank with clean water before refilling. Thetford recommends using toilet seal lubricant and conditioner regularly to keep the seals working, and many owners add a tank treatment made for portable toilets to control odor.

Portable, composting or RV toilet?

A portable toilet is the simplest option for occasional use. For a cabin or tiny home used often, a composting toilet avoids carrying liquid waste; see our composting toilet guide. For a permanent RV toilet that flushes into a black tank, see our RV toilet guide. For more RV plumbing, our RV shower head and RV bathroom faucet guides cover the rest of the bathroom.
