Best PVC Pipe Repair Kit

The best PVC pipe repair depends on what the pipe carries. For drain and vent lines, a Fernco 1056-series flexible coupling (1056-22 for 2 inch, 1056-33 for 3 inch, 1056-44 for 4 inch) is the standard repair. For pressure water lines, cut out the bad section and solvent-weld in new pipe with PVC repair (slip) couplings that have no center stop. Never use a rubber drain coupling on a pressure line.

Cracked PVC usually comes from freezing, a shovel, a settled slab or a fitting that was stressed when it went in. If you need to stop water right now, see how to stop a leaking pipe or our pipe repair clamp picks for a temporary fix.

Pressure pipe vs drain pipe: the first question

PVC is used two ways in a house, and the repair parts are not interchangeable.

  • Pressure lines carry water under pressure from the main, a well or an irrigation system. They are usually Schedule 40 or 80 and stamped for pressure.
  • DWV lines carry drain water by gravity. They are not under pressure, except during a test.

Fernco states that its standard flexible couplings (fernco.com) are made for drain, waste, vent and sewer service, not for pressurized water systems, with a maximum test pressure of 4.3 psi. That one fact rules them out for any supply line. Our Schedule 40 vs 80 guide helps you read the stamp on your pipe.

BEST DRAIN REPAIR · 3 IN.

Fernco 1056-33 flexible coupling

Choose it when a 3-inch PVC, ABS or cast iron drain has a crack or a bad section and you want to cut it out and splice in new pipe. Fernco describes the 1056 series as couplings that join cast iron, plastic or steel to the same materials. The body is elastomeric PVC, the clamps are stainless steel on sizes 15 inch and smaller, and Fernco lists an installation torque of 60 inch-pounds for those sizes.

Fernco rates its standard couplings for above-ground and below-ground use, from minus 30 degrees F to 140 degrees F non-continuous, and lists conformance to ASTM D5926, ASTM C1173 and CSA B602.

Skip it on any pressure line, and where a buried transition will carry heavy soil loads. Fernco points to its shielded Strong Back RC coupling for that case.

2 IN. DRAIN AND VENT

Fernco 1056-22 flexible coupling

Choose it when you repair a 2-inch drain or vent, such as a cracked laundry or kitchen branch. It works the same way as the 3-inch version: cut out the damage, fit a new piece of pipe and clamp a coupling at each end.

Skip it if an inspector in your area requires shielded couplings above ground. Some do. Ask before you close the wall.

4 IN. BUILDING DRAIN

Fernco 1056-44 flexible coupling

Choose it when you repair a 4-inch building drain or sewer in a crawl space or a trench. Measure the pipe outside diameter first: 4-inch PVC and 4-inch cast iron are not the same size, and transitions need a coupling made for both.

Skip it for buried connections under driveways or where the soil may move. That job calls for a shielded coupling and, in most places, a permit and inspection. Main sewer work is a licensed plumber’s job.

If you are choosing the replacement pipe material as well as the coupling, our cast iron versus PVC DWV comparison separates barrel and spigot measurements, sound and movement considerations, and the finished installation scope. It covers drain materials; it does not approve a repair coupling or pressure-line substitution.

How to repair a pressure PVC line

For a water line, the reliable repair is still a solvent-welded one. Here is the trade method.

  1. Shut off and drain the line. Open a faucet below the repair to let water out.
  2. Cut out the damage. Cut square, at least a couple of inches past any crack you can see. Cracks often run farther than they look.
  3. Use repair couplings. A PVC repair or slip coupling has no stop in the middle, so it can slide fully onto one pipe end and then back over the gap. Match the schedule and size of the pipe.
  4. Prime and cement. Clean, prime where required, and cement both pipe and fitting. See whether purple primer is required in your area.
  5. Wait for the cure. Follow the cement maker’s cure chart before you turn the water back on. Cold weather and larger pipe need longer.

Charlotte Pipe’s plastics manual (charlottepipe.com) warns against overtightening threaded plastic joints and says molded or cut threads on Schedule 40 and 80 carry 50% of the pressure rating of solvent-cemented systems. That is another reason plumbers prefer a cemented repair over threaded adapters on pressure pipe.

Telescoping and compression repair couplings

A telescoping repair coupling has a sleeve that slides inside a body. You cement one end, slide it out over the gap, and cement the other. It is handy in a trench where you cannot spring the pipe apart.

A compression repair coupling uses gaskets and nuts instead of glue. It works on a wet pipe, which is its big advantage. Check the maker’s pressure rating and whether it is approved for burial before you use one underground.

Both are made by several pipe and fitting makers. Buy them from a supply house or the maker’s dealer list, and follow that maker’s instructions exactly.

How to install a flexible drain coupling

  1. Support the pipe. Strap the pipe on both sides of the cut so it cannot sag when the section comes out.
  2. Cut out the damage square. Leave a gap the length of your new piece of pipe.
  3. Clean the pipe ends. Wipe off dirt and burrs so the rubber seals evenly.
  4. Slide the couplings on, center them, and tighten. Fernco lists 60 inch-pounds for its standard couplings 15 inch and smaller. Do not overtighten.
  5. Keep the slope. The repaired drain must keep its fall toward the sewer. IPC Chapter 7 (codes.iccsafe.org) sets the minimum slope by pipe size.

PVC repair FAQ

Can I use a Fernco coupling on a PVC water line?

No. Fernco says its standard flexible couplings are for drain, waste, vent and sewer service and are not for pressurized water systems, with a maximum test pressure of 4.3 psi.

What is a PVC repair coupling?

It is a solvent-weld coupling with no stop in the middle. It slides all the way onto one pipe end, then back over the joint, so you can repair a pipe that cannot be pulled apart.

Can I glue PVC that is still wet?

Solvent cement needs clean, dry pipe. If the line will not stop dripping, use a mechanical compression coupling rated for the pressure or get the line fully drained first.

How long before I can turn the water back on?

Follow the cure chart on the cement can. Cure time depends on pipe size, temperature and humidity, and cold weather needs longer.

Do I need a permit to repair a sewer line?

Often yes, especially for buried building sewer work. Many areas also require a licensed plumber and an inspection before the trench is backfilled.

How we chose

This is a document-based comparison from a licensed plumber’s point of view. We used Fernco’s published ratings for its flexible couplings and Charlotte Pipe’s installation manual for plastic joint limits, and we sorted repairs by whether the pipe is under pressure. Sources and linked listings were read October 13, 2026; sellers and availability change. We do not publish prices or claim hands-on testing. More about our selection method and Plumbing Picks.
