Best Shower Rod (2026)

The best shower rod for a standard 5 ft tub is the Moen CSR2165CH, a fixed curved rod that mounts on pivoting flanges and gives more elbow room than a straight rod. If the alcove is a bit wider or you are not sure of the size, the Moen DN2160CH or CSR2160 adjusts from 5 to 6 ft. Renters and anyone who will not drill tile should look at the Zenna Home E35633 curved tension rod, and a small shower stall needs a short rod like the Zenna Home 502W.

Plumbing Picks is reader-supported. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.

A shower rod looks like a decor item, but the hard part is the wall. Screws in tile, a fiberglass surround or a wall with the shower valve behind it can go wrong fast. If you are updating the head too, our handheld shower head guide covers the other half of the job.

BEST OVERALL · 5 FT CURVED · PIVOTING FLANGES

Moen CSR2165CH: the curved rod for a 5 ft tub

Choose it when you have the classic setup: a 5 ft tub in a three-wall alcove. Moen’s CSR2165CH page (maker page: shop.moen.com/products/csr2165ch) says it is designed to fit a 5 ft tub, uses 180-degree pivoting mounting flanges, and has decorative covers over the screws. The curve pushes the curtain out so it does not cling to you. Moen lists it as corrosion resistant, and it comes in chrome (CH), matte black, brushed nickel and Old World bronze.

Skip it if the alcove is wider than 5 ft or you cannot drill the wall. A fixed rod does not stretch.

Buy from a Moen dealer; we found no new, in-stock Amazon listing with a buy box for the CSR2165CH on October 14, 2026.

BEST ADJUSTABLE · 60 TO 72 IN · NO CUTTING

Moen DN2160CH and CSR2160: adjustable curved, 5 to 6 ft

Choose it when the wall-to-wall measurement is between 60 and 72 in or the walls are a little out of square. The DN2160CH page (maker page: shop.moen.com/products/dn2160ch) lists an adjustable bar from 60 to 72 in assembled, 180-degree pivoting flanges, and no cutting. Moen sells the same idea in its Curved Shower Rods line as CSR2160CH (maker page: shop.moen.com/products/csr2160ch), which also adjusts from 5 to 6 ft and fits standard 72 x 72 in curtains.

On October 14, 2026 we found no DN2160CH on Amazon and the chrome CSR2160CH had no buy box, so the link below is the CSR2160 in brushed nickel (CSR2160BN), one of the finishes Moen lists for that rod.

Skip it if you want a seamless look. Adjustable rods have a visible joint where the two tubes overlap.

BEST NO-DRILL · TENSION CURVED · 50 TO 72 IN

Zenna Home E35633HBP1: curved without screws (bronze linked)

Choose it when you rent, you do not want holes in tile, or the wall is a fiberglass surround you would rather not drill. Zenna Home’s curved rod listing (zennahome.com) describes the E35633SSP1 as a rustproof tension curved rod, adjustable from 50 to 72 in, in chrome. Bronze (E35633HBP1) and brushed nickel (E35633BNP1) are the same rod. On October 14, 2026 the chrome and brushed nickel versions had only used offers on Amazon, so the link below is the bronze E35633HBP1.

Skip it if you hang wet towels or heavy liners on the rod or someone grabs it for balance. Tension rods hold by pressure and can slip. Nobody should use any shower rod as a grab bar.

BEST DUAL MOUNT · CURVED · 50 TO 72 IN

Zenna Home 72S2ALSSL: tension now, screws later

Choose it when you want to try a curved rod without drilling but keep the option to screw it in. Zenna Home’s dual-mount listing (zennahome.com) names it a rustproof dual-mount curved rod, 50 to 72 in, in chrome. Bronze (72S2ALHBL), nickel (72S2ALBNL) and matte black (72S2ALBKL) match it.

Skip it if you already know you will screw it in. A rod made only for flanges, like the Moen picks, has fewer parts.

Buy from a Zenna Home dealer; we found no in-stock new Amazon listing for the 72S2ALSSL or its other finishes on October 14, 2026.

BEST STRAIGHT · SCREW MOUNT AND SMALL STALLS

Zenna Home 648SS and 502W: straight rods by size

Choose the 648SS when you want a straight, screw-mounted rod. Zenna Home’s permanent-mount listing (zennahome.com) calls it a permanent-mount shower rod with decorative end caps, 72 in, in chrome. A straight rod is right in a tight bathroom where a curve would hit a vanity or door swing. For an alcove longer than 72 in, the same listing shows the 99136, a straight rod that adjusts to 76 in, but we found no Amazon listing for it on October 14, 2026.

Choose the 502W when the shower is a small stall. Zenna Home’s tension rod listing (zennahome.com) describes it as a stall-size adjustable tension rod, 27 to 40 in, in white. The same listing has the chrome 502S and the rustproof aluminum 40B4ALSSL, but we found no Amazon listing for either on October 14, 2026.

Skip them if a curved rod fits. In a standard tub, a curve gives more room at shoulder height.

How to measure for a shower rod

  1. Measure wall to wall at the height you plan to mount the rod, not at the tub rim. Walls lean, so measure in two spots.
  2. Pick a rod whose range covers your number with room on both ends. A 60 in alcove fits a fixed 5 ft rod or any 50 to 72 in adjustable rod.
  3. Check the curtain length. Moen says its CSR2160CH fits standard 72 x 72 in curtains. Set the rod so the curtain hem, plus the drop of your rings or hooks, hangs inside the tub.
  4. Check clearance. A curved rod bows out into the room. Make sure it clears the vanity, the door and any light fixture.

Plumbers think about one thing when they drill a shower wall: what is behind it. The valve wall has hot and cold lines and a pipe running up to the shower arm. Do not drill there unless you know where the pipes are. Check every proposed mounting location for plumbing and wiring. A stud finder does not prove a spot is safe to drill. If you cannot establish a safe drilling path, use a compatible tension rod or get help before making holes.

  • Tile: mark the hole, put painter’s tape on it, start with a bit made for tile or porcelain at low speed and no hammer mode. Drill through the tile, then switch to the bit your anchor needs.
  • Stud or blocking: the best hold. A screw into wood behind the tile does not need a hollow-wall anchor.
  • Hollow wall: use an anchor rated for the wall type and seal the hole with a dab of silicone so water does not get behind the tile.
  • Fiberglass or acrylic surround: drill slowly to avoid cracking the finish, and follow the surround maker’s guidance.

If you hit water while drilling, shut off the house main and call a licensed plumber. Do not try to plug a nicked pipe from the front of the wall.

Shower head and rod height

A curved rod gives you room at shoulder height, but it does not raise a low shower head. If the head hits tall people in the chin, a new arm is the fix; see our shower arm and extender guide. If you are done with curtains altogether, a door kit is the next step; our walk-in shower kit guide covers base, walls and door.

Shower rod FAQ

What size shower rod do I need for a standard tub?

Measure wall to wall at the mounting height. If it is 5 feet, Moen says its CSR2165CH curved rod is designed to fit a 5 foot tub. If your number is between 60 and 72 inches, an adjustable rod like the Moen DN2160CH covers it.

Is a curved shower rod better than a straight one?

In a tub alcove, usually yes. The curve moves the curtain out so you have more room and the curtain does not cling. In a tight bathroom where the curve would hit a vanity or door, use a straight rod.

Will a tension shower rod hold?

It holds a curtain and liner on a flat, solid wall. It can slip if you hang wet towels on it or someone pulls on it. If it keeps falling, switch to a dual-mount or screw-mount rod.

How do I mount a shower rod into tile without cracking it?

Tape the spot, use a tile or porcelain bit at low speed with no hammer mode, then switch to the bit your anchor needs. Hit a stud if you can, seal the holes, and do not drill the valve wall unless you know where the pipes are.

Can I use a shower rod as a grab bar?

No. Shower rods are not made to hold a person’s weight. Install a grab bar into solid backing if someone needs support getting in or out of the tub.

How we chose

This is a document-based comparison from a licensed plumber’s point of view. We read the maker product pages and listings for each rod and picked models with stated lengths and mounting methods that cover the common tub and stall sizes. Sources and linked listings were read October 14, 2026; sellers and availability change. We do not publish prices or claim hands-on testing. More about our selection method and Plumbing Picks.
