These are live cultures — bacteria plus the enzymes they produce — that digest organic matter: grease, soap scum, food residue, the protein in hair. They are biological, not chemical, and they work at the speed biology works.
What that means practically: they need time and they need contact. Pour one in and immediately run the tap and you have washed your money into the sewer. They want to sit in a line overnight with the water still.
Caustic and acid cleaners
The harsh stuff is typically sodium hydroxide (lye) or sulfuric acid. They work by chemical reaction, generating significant heat, saponifying grease and breaking down hair fast — in minutes rather than overnight.
They are genuinely powerful. That is not in dispute. The question is what happens when they do not work.

Why the trade dislikes chemical cleaners
The usual explanation is “they eat your pipes.” That is partly a myth, and repeating it means the actual reason gets missed.
1. The standing caustic — this is the real one
If the product does not clear the clog, and often it does not, you now have a pipe holding concentrated lye or acid directly above a blockage. The next person to plunge that drain, or open that trap, gets it on their hands and in their face.

2. What it does to PVC — accurately
PVC resists both lye and sulfuric acid reasonably well. The plastic is usually not what fails. The damage comes from heat. These products are exothermic, and a strong dose sitting in a line with no flow can generate enough heat to soften a joint or deform the rubber washers in a slip-joint trap.

3. What it does to galvanized — this one is genuinely bad
An old galvanized drain that keeps clogging is usually clogging because it is corroding. The zinc has worn off the inside and the bore is closing up with rust nodules. There is often no soft blockage to dissolve — the pipe itself is the obstruction.
Pour acid into that and you strip what protection remains and attack iron that may already be paper-thin. It gets sold as cleaning the pipe. It is thinning it. Where enzymes genuinely fail
Being fair to the other side, enzyme cleaners are oversold too:
- A fully blocked drain. No flow means no contact and no distribution. The product sits in the trap and does nothing useful.
- Mineral scale. Enzymes digest organic matter. Scale is not organic.
- Roots. Not a chance.
- Wipes, floss, cotton, paper towel. These do not break down — that is the entire problem with them.
- Anything dropped down there. Obviously.
- Impatience. An enzyme treatment judged after twenty minutes will look like a failure. It is not designed to work in twenty minutes.
What I would actually do
- Slow drain, still flowing? Enzyme treatment overnight, no water after. Repeat monthly as maintenance. This is the correct use and it works.
- Bathroom sink slow? Before buying anything — pull the pop-up stopper out. Hair wraps around the pivot rod behind the drain body into a solid plug. Two minutes, no tools, and it fixes a large share of slow bathroom sinks.
