Everyone who runs PEX eventually crimps something they should not have. The go/no-go gauge fails the ring. The elbow is rotated ninety degrees off. You crimped a tee where a coupling belonged. Or you got all the way to the manifold before realizing you ran the hot line to the wrong bay.
A crimped joint is not permanent, but it is not casually reversible either. There are exactly three ways out, and picking the wrong one costs you either a fitting, a length of tube, or a callback. Here is how I decide on a job.
First: know which connection you are looking at
These are two different systems and they come apart differently.
- Copper crimp ring. A solid copper band, smooth all the way around after crimping, sitting over the barb. This is the ASTM F1807 system. It can be removed with a dedicated tool.
- Stainless cinch clamp. A stainless band with a raised tab or ear that got pinched flat. This is the ASTM F2098 system. There is no decrimping it — the ear is a one-way deformation. It gets cut.

Removing a copper crimp ring with a decrimping tool
There is a purpose-built tool for this and it is the cheapest of the three options. IWISS makes the one most people end up with.

IWISS describes the IWS-1210C as designed to remove copper rings from PEX barb fitting connections so that fittings can be re-used, working on half-inch, three-quarter-inch and one-inch copper crimp rings. They list compatibility with copper crimp rings made to the ASTM F1807 standard — naming Sioux Chief, Watts and Nibco — and with brass or PPSU crimp-style PEX fittings built to F1807/F877 and F2159 respectively. The tool cuts the ring with what they call a gentle action intended not to damage the fitting underneath.
That last part is the whole trick, and it is where people wreck fittings. The tool has two adjusters and they do different jobs: per IWISS, the side adjuster sets the pipe size and the screw adjuster controls cutting depth, which they flag as critical for safe operation. Set the depth too deep and you are not cutting a copper ring, you are cutting into a brass barb, and that fitting is now scrap.
The sequence that works
- Kill the water and drain the line. PEX holds water in every sag and loop. Open the lowest fixture and a high one to break the vacuum.
- Set the side adjuster to the ring size you are removing. Half-inch, three-quarter, one-inch.
- Back the screw adjuster out to its shallowest setting. Always start shallow. You can take another bite; you cannot un-cut a barb.
- Seat the jaws squarely on the ring, not on the tube and not straddling the edge, and squeeze.
- Check the cut. If the ring has not opened, creep the depth screw in a little and take a second bite in the same spot. Repeat until the ring splits.
- Spread and peel. Once it splits, work the ring open with a small screwdriver and pull it off with pliers. Copper tears skin — wear gloves.
- Pull the tube off the barb. This is often harder than removing the ring. IWISS notes that if the pipe grips the fitting tightly you can gently heat it to soften the tube. That means a heat gun on low or a rag soaked in hot water. Not a torch. A torch will melt or embrittle the PEX before it does anything useful and will discolor a brass fitting you were trying to save.
When the removal tool is the wrong answer
Be honest about your access. The decrimping tool needs room to get its jaws square on the ring and room for your hand behind it. In an open joist bay on a workbench, it is perfect. In a stud cavity with three inches of tube sticking out of a plate, you will never get square on the ring, and forcing it at an angle is how the barb gets scored.
The other case: if the mistake was the tube routing rather than the fitting, you are cutting the tube anyway. Removing the ring gains you nothing.
Removing a stainless cinch clamp

Two ways to get it off:
- Cut the band with a pair of end nippers or heavy side cutters, on the band itself, opposite the ear. Get the jaws under the band edge, not on the tube. Once the band is severed it peels off with pliers.
- Use a cinch tool with a removal jaw. Several combination tools include one, which turns a two-minute fight into a squeeze.

This is the kit I point DIY repipers at, because the removal jaw is built into the same tool that makes the connection. If you are learning PEX, you are going to remove clamps. Having the remover in your hand at the moment you need it is worth more than saving a little on a crimp-only tool.
Whichever way you cut it, do not let the cutter touch the tube. A nick in PEX under the fitting is invisible once the new clamp goes on and it will weep six months later.
The third option: cut it out and couple it
Half the time this is what I actually do, and there is no shame in it. If the tube has slack, if the fitting is a cheap brass coupling, or if access is bad, cutting is faster and more certain than surgery.

Use a real PEX cutter, not a utility knife and not a hacksaw. A square cut is not a nicety — an angled end will not seat fully on the barb and the ring will crimp unevenly. Our PEX cutter picks cover the ratcheting versus scissor styles.
- Cut the tube cleanly on both sides of the bad fitting and throw the fitting away.
- Cut back another half inch past any visible barb impressions in the tube. Those ridges never fully relax and a barb ridge under a new ring is a leak path.
- Deburr nothing, but do check the cut is square and the bore is round. Squash it in the cutter jaws and it will not seat.
- Join with a new coupling and new rings. Never reuse a crimp ring, not even one that came off clean.
- Gauge every crimp. Go/no-go is not optional.

Can you actually reuse the fitting?
Yes — that is the stated purpose of the removal tool, and in practice it works. But inspect before you commit:
- Look at the barbs. Any nick, flat spot, or bright scrape from the cutter means the sealing ridge is compromised. Bin it.
- Look at the shoulder. If the tool bit into the fitting body, bin it.
- Check for out-of-round. A brass fitting that got squeezed off-axis will never gauge properly again.
- Poly fittings are less forgiving. PPSU is tough but it does not have brass’s ability to shrug off a scratch. I reuse brass freely and poly only when it comes off perfectly clean.

What not to do
- No rotary tool. A cutoff wheel on a copper ring throws hot metal, cuts the tube before you notice, and scores the barb underneath. I have replaced fittings ruined this way more than once.
- No torch. Gentle heat means a heat gun on low. Open flame near PEX is a repipe.
- Never reuse a ring or a clamp. Both are single-use by design.
- Do not skip the gauge on the remake. The joint you just fought with is exactly the one you will be tempted to eyeball.
