Get the WORKPRO W102046AE two-pack, 10.0 on our spec score: two coated steel keys with the four common stem sizes. Want one key? Take the Danco 80442. An oval stem, or one bigger than 11/32 inch, needs the maker’s own key.

How the three compare on our spec score
Five checks from WORKPRO’s store page, Danco’s product page and Pasco’s trade catalog, equal weight. The rules and every input are in the method section near the end.
PlumbingPicks spec score out of 10, from the makers’ pages and catalog, read Oct 22, 2026. It is not a customer rating or a lab test of our own.
A sillcock key is a small cross-shaped wrench with a square socket at the end of each arm. It turns the bare square stem of an outdoor faucet whose handle is missing or was taken off on purpose. Jones Stephens pitches its own key for apartment buildings where water is metered per unit, to help prevent misuse or theft.
All three picks cover the same four stem sizes, so the score splits them on build and paperwork: the metal the maker names, the finish that keeps rust off, the size and weight it publishes, and whether you get a spare key or a chain loop.
Each pick, in detail
What each maker publishes, where each key fits the job, and where each one lost points on our checks.
You want one key in the truck and one in the house, or a spare for a helper, from a maker that puts the steel, the finish and the size in writing.
Skip it if
You need just one key and want it on a key ring. The Pasco 1701 has a chain loop.
The W102046AE is WORKPRO’s two-pack of 4-way sillcock keys, and I’ve used it. WORKPRO is a tool brand of Hangzhou GreatStar Industrial, and its own store sells the same black two-key set under the code W102046AH. Each cross has four square sockets: 1/4, 9/32, 5/16 and 11/32 inch.
It’s the only pick that maxed all five checks, a 10.0. WORKPRO names the steel, the finish and the size of the key, which is more than any other 4-way key maker we checked put in writing.
The keys are forged from 40Cr steel, and WORKPRO says that gives them high hardness. A named alloy grade earned a 10 on metal. A key that turns a stem nobody has touched since last fall needs sockets that keep their shape.
For rust, WORKPRO uses a black electrophoretic coating, the dipped e-coat finish used on a lot of steel parts, and says it resists rust. Naming the finish earned a 10. A key that lives in a truck door pocket or a wet hose box gets plenty of chances to rust.
WORKPRO also publishes the size: 78 by 78 by 17.5 mm per key, about 3.07 inches across, and 159 grams. That’s pocket size, and it’s a 10 on specs. Danco and Pasco publish no key dimensions at all.
Two keys in the pack scored a 10 on keeping one on hand. The listing photo shows each arm’s size printed on the black finish, so you don’t have to try all four on a stem. Check yours when it arrives, because the photo is the only place we saw it.
WORKPRO adds a warning worth reading: the set may not fit certain radiator valves, so confirm the size before you buy for that job. For outdoor faucets, the four arms match the four sizes Danco’s listing calls standard.
On warranty, WORKPRO’s page doesn’t list sillcock keys by name. It covers wrenches for life and other hand tools for two years, with proof of purchase. Ask WORKPRO support which class this key falls in before you count on either.
My call: buy this set, keep one key on the truck and one in a kitchen drawer for the day a handle goes missing.
You want one solid key from a faucet-parts maker that names hardened steel, and it will live in a drawer or a toolbox.
Skip it if
You want a spare or a key on a ring. The WORKPRO set has two keys and the Pasco has a chain loop.
The 80442 is Danco’s 4-in-1 sillcock key, and I’ve used it. Danco makes faucet repair parts, and its product page calls this a single steel tool that does the work of four. It scored 8.0.
Danco lists hardened-steel construction on that page, a 10 on metal. The spec table says steel, and the four arms are female sockets, so the stem slides inside the arm. The listing adds that it works on valves that a wrench or pliers can’t grip.
The sizes need a careful read. Danco’s bullet list says the key fits 1/4, 9/32, 5/16 and 11/32-inch valves. The description above it names only 1/4, 9/32 and 11/32. The listing title and photo show four arms, so I scored all four, a 10 on sizes.
Rust is where it lost the first points. The brand-written Amazon listing calls the steel corrosion-resistant, and the title says chrome. Danco’s own page names no plating or coating, so it scored an 8. Its California Prop 65 notice names nickel.
Danco publishes the package size, 4.50 by 2.98 by 1.25 inches, not the key’s. Under our rule a package size counts as no key size, a 6 on specs. And one key with no loop is a 6 on keeping it on hand.
On warranty, Amazon’s item data gives the 80442 a one-year limited warranty. Danco’s warranty page describes one-year and five-year terms, both limited to defects in material or workmanship, with replacement or refund at Danco’s option.
The listing photo shows a bright plated cross with four round arms and a wider center hub. The arms carry no size marks in the photo, so plan on trying them until one slides fully onto the stem, or use the checker below first.
Danco also sells a single 5/16-inch key, the 80132, which the listing calls broached 5/16 inch. One size is fine when you know the stem. I’d still start with the four-arm 80442.
My call: if you only ever need one key, this is the one I’d keep in a kitchen drawer. It comes from the same company that sells the stems and washers you’ll need when that faucet finally drips.
Best for a key ring
Pasco 1701 4-way key, die cast, with key chain loop
Product photo: Amazon. A black-and-white catalog photo; the chain loop isn’t in view.
You want the key on your key ring or a lanyard, so it’s with you when you find a spigot with no handle.
Skip it if
You turn stuck stems more often than free ones. The two steel keys name their metal; Pasco doesn’t.
The 1701 is the 4-way key from PASCO Specialty & Mfg., and I’ve used it. Pasco’s trade catalog runs from commercial faucets to shower pan liner, and the 1701 sits on page C-19 of its Tools & Electrical section, dated Aug. 1, 2023. It scored 7.6.
The catalog gives it four lines: fits stopcocks, sillcocks and valves; sizes 1/4 to 9/32 inch and 5/16 to 11/32 inch; die cast; and a key chain loop. The Amazon listing spells out the four sizes as 1/4, 9/32, 5/16 and 11/32 inch, so it scored a 10 on sizes.
The chain loop is why it’s here. It scored a 10 on keeping it on hand, the same as WORKPRO’s spare key. The listing says the key comes attached to a keychain, which is how you end up having it when you need it.
Where it lost points is the metal. Pasco says die cast and doesn’t name the alloy, a 6 on metal. Die casting forces molten metal into a mold, while the WORKPRO key is forged.
Pasco names no plating or coating, a 6 on rust, and publishes no key size or weight, another 6 on specs. The listing photo is a black-and-white catalog shot of the cross, with no loop in view, so you can’t judge the finish from it either.
Pasco’s terms of sale give its products a 365-day limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, counted from the date of original installation. Claims go to Pasco by email within 30 days of finding the defect, with the part number.
The same catalog page lists a single 5/16-inch die cast sillcock key, the 1700, and a 10-inch log lighter key, the 1707, for 1/4 and 5/16-inch stems. The long log lighter key reaches a gas valve set down in a hearth.
My call: hang this one on the key ring you carry to service calls, and keep a steel key in the truck for stems that won’t turn freely.
The three side by side
Sizes, metal, finish, published size and what comes in the pack, from each maker’s own page or catalog.
From WORKPRO’s store page for the set, Danco’s 80442 product page and Pasco’s catalog page C-19, read Oct 22, 2026. “Listing only” means only the brand-written Amazon text says it.
Which arm fits your faucet stem?
Measure the stem, pick its shape, and the checker names the arm. It also tells you when a 4-way key is the wrong tool.
Inch sizes from WORKPRO, Danco and Pasco; millimeters at 25.4 mm per inch. The gray bar is shown for size only: a 3/8 in. square is bigger than any arm on these keys.
The four arms step up by 1/32 inch each, about 0.79 mm. That’s a small step, which is why the wrong arm can feel almost right. One size too big slips onto the stem and spins when you turn it.
My call: if an arm rocks on the stem, try the next size down before you lean on it. A loose socket rounds the corners of a brass stem, and once the corners go, no key will turn it. Then the fix is a new stem or a new faucet, not a new key.
Loose-key valves that need the maker’s own key
Some hydrants and hose bibbs are built so a common key won’t open them. These are the makers’ keys we found on Amazon on Oct 22, 2026. They aren’t scored picks.
From the brand-written Amazon listings for each key, read Oct 22, 2026. Keys sold by other brands as “compatible” with these models aren’t listed here.
The shape tells you most of it. Prier’s key is a D-oval, so a square socket can’t drive it at all. Third-party copies of Zurn’s key describe it as a 3/8-inch square, a size larger than any arm on a 4-way key.
My call: when you find one of these, read the brand cast into the hydrant body before you buy anything. A key made for one maker’s loose-key valve rarely fits another maker’s.
Single-size sillcock keys
A one-size key is for a faucet you already know. These came up from known brands on Oct 22, 2026.
Key
Size
What the maker or listing says
Buy
Danco 80132
5/16 in.
Broached 5/16 in.; durable steel; for loose key valves (listing)
A single-size key makes sense on a property where every faucet is the same model and you’ve already measured the stem. Anywhere else, you rarely know the size until you’re standing at the faucet.
My call: buy a 4-way key first. The four arms cost you nothing in pocket space, and they save a second trip.
How to open and close a sillcock with a key
My call, step by step.
1
Find the stem
On a handle-less faucet the stem is the square post where the handle sat. On a broken one, take out the handle screw and pull the old handle first.
2
Match the arm
Measure the flats or use the checker above. Push the socket all the way down the stem. A socket that only catches the tips will round them off.
3
Turn it open
Most outdoor faucets open counterclockwise, the same as a handle. Turn slowly and let the water come up to pressure.
4
Close it gently
Turn clockwise and stop when you feel it seat. On a compression faucet, cranking past closed squashes the washer, and then it drips.
5
Take the key with you
On a building where handles come off on purpose, a key left on the faucet defeats the point.
Only open faucets you own or have the owner’s OK to use. Handles come off commercial faucets on purpose, and the water on the other side is somebody’s bill.
When the key won’t turn the faucet
My call on four common problems with keyed faucets.
What happens
Likely cause
What I’d do
Every arm slips
Rounded stem corners
Replace the stem or the faucet; a key won’t grip it again
Stem won’t budge
Mineral build-up or a tight packing nut
Back the packing nut a quarter turn, then try the key again
Water at the stem when open
Loose packing nut or worn packing
Snug the packing nut a little; repack it if that doesn’t stop it
Turns, but no water
Indoor shut-off closed, or ice in the pipe
Check the indoor valve; in freezing weather, don’t force it
A frost-free sillcock puts the valve seat inside the warm wall, at the end of a long stem. If one turns but gives no water in winter, the pipe behind it may be frozen. Thaw the pipe, don’t lean on the key. Our winterizing checklist covers shutting outdoor faucets down before the cold.
Sillcock keys we checked and left out
These came up in Amazon searches on Oct 22, 2026. Here’s what kept each off the list.
Key
What we found
Why it’s out
“Jones Stephens” 4-Way Sillcock Key listing
Listing model 4WK; its UPC matches ProSource T154-3L at hardware stores
Can’t be matched to Jones Stephens’s J40005
LASCO 01-5223
4-way key for the same four sizes; durable metal
No maker page found, and 2 left in stock
Plumb Craft Waxman 7716400N
4-way steel key; the listing’s brand reads Zurn Pex
Brand mismatch, and 1 left in stock
Husky 16PL0129
Home Depot’s 4-way key, on Google’s first page
Sold at Home Depot, not on Amazon
Unbranded 4-way keys
Dozens of look-alike crosses in the same four sizes
No maker document we could match
The Jones Stephens listing is the one to watch. Jones Stephens does make a 4-way key, the J40005, in plated steel with narrow ends for recessed faucets. But the Amazon listing under its name carries model 4WK and a UPC that retailers sell as a ProSource T154-3L. I couldn’t tie it to the J40005, so it’s out.
How to choose in five questions
Question
If yes
If no
Do you want a spare key?
WORKPRO W102046AE (2 keys)
Danco 80442 or Pasco 1701
Will it ride on a key ring?
Pasco 1701 (chain loop)
WORKPRO or Danco
Are the stems often stuck?
A steel key: WORKPRO or Danco
Any of the three
Is the stem oval, or bigger than 11/32 in.?
The maker’s own key (table above)
A 4-way key
Do you also open utility cabinets?
WORKPRO W004205AE, with a cabinet key
WORKPRO W102046AE
WORKPRO’s other set, the W004205AE, pairs one 4-way key with a zinc alloy cross cabinet key that has two square holes, a triangle and a round hole, on a beaded chain. That’s the one for meter boxes and utility panels too.
My call for a plumber’s truck: the WORKPRO two-pack, one key on the dash and one in the bucket. For a homeowner with one handle-less faucet, the Danco 80442 does the job.
Questions people ask
What is the best sillcock key?
The WORKPRO W102046AE two-pack, at 10.0 on our spec score. WORKPRO names the 40Cr steel, the black e-coat finish and the key size, and you get two keys.
What is a sillcock key?
A small cross-shaped wrench with a square socket on each arm. It turns the bare square stem of an outdoor faucet whose handle is missing or was taken off.
What sizes does a 4-way sillcock key fit?
1/4, 9/32, 5/16 and 11/32 inch, or 6.35, 7.14, 7.94 and 8.73 mm. All three picks list those four.
Which arm do I use?
Measure across two flat sides of the stem and pick the smallest arm that slides fully on. The checker on this page does it in inches or millimeters.
What can I use instead of a sillcock key?
Locking pliers will turn a bare stem, but they chew the corners, and a rounded stem won’t take a key afterward. My call: buy the key.
What is the difference between a spigot and a sillcock?
Spigot is the everyday word for an outdoor faucet. Sillcock usually means one that comes through the house wall. Our sillcock vs hose bibb page covers the trade names.
Why do some outdoor faucets have no handle?
Owners take them off so water can’t be run without permission. Jones Stephens pitches its key for apartment buildings where water is metered per unit.
Can I use a sillcock key on any building?
Only with the owner’s permission. The handle is off for a reason, and the water is somebody’s bill.
Will a sillcock key open a wall hydrant?
Only if its stem is one of the four square sizes. Prier hydrants use a D-oval key, and Zurn’s Z1300 series takes its own hydrant key.
Will a 4-way key open a radiator valve?
Some. WORKPRO lists radiator valves among its uses but warns the set may not fit certain ones, so measure first.
Are sillcock keys universal?
No. A 4-way key covers four square sizes. Oval stems and larger squares need the faucet maker’s own key.
Is the Husky 4-way key on Amazon?
No. Husky’s 4-Way Sillcock Key, 16PL0129, is sold at Home Depot, so it isn’t scored here.
How we picked these
Why trust me
I’m Isaac Daniels, a licensed journeyman plumber in Georgia (license #JP507711), and I’ve used all three picks. Every spec here comes from WORKPRO’s store page, Danco’s product page and Pasco’s trade catalog, read Oct 22, 2026. Where I add advice of my own, it’s labeled as my call.
How I pick
Only 4-way sillcock keys from documented brands, new and in stock on Amazon, checked through Amazon’s product data the same day.
Facts from each maker’s page or catalog first. Where only the brand-written listing says something, the page says so, and where the two disagree, the page shows both.
Each card’s spec score comes from the five checks below. All three score 7.0 or higher.
