How to Use Push-to-Connect Fittings
- Cut the pipe cleanly and squarely with a pipe cutter — not a hacksaw.
- Deburr the pipe end with sandpaper or a deburring tool.
- Mark the insertion depth on the pipe.
- Push firmly into the fitting until you feel it hit the stop.
- Tug back — it shouldn’t pull out. Turn water on and check for leaks.
Plumber’s tip: The most common cause of push-to-connect leaks is a burr on the pipe end cutting the O-ring. Always deburr.

Push-to-connect is sold as tool-free, and making the connection genuinely is. Preparing the pipe and getting the fitting back off are not.
