Best Rain Shower Heads (2026): Kohler, Delta, Moen

Plumbing Picks is reader-supported. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.

Quick answer from a licensed plumber: For most showers, buy the Kohler Awaken K-76465-G. It has a 9-7/8 in. face, a swivel ball joint to level it on a wall arm, and a 1.75 gpm rating that EPA’s WaterSense search lists. For a square head, the Delta 52841. For a rain spray plus a rinse spray, the Moen Velocity S6320. Check your state’s flow limit first, because these heads come in more than one flow under the same name.

Our pick for most showers: the Kohler Awaken K-76465-G, a 10 in. rain head for a ceiling or wall arm. Check the Kohler Awaken K-76465-G-CP on Amazon

A rain shower head is a wide, flat head that drops water down on you instead of spraying it at you. This page covers fixed rain heads only. Rain heads built into a wall-mounted column with body jets are in our shower panel guide. Rain heads paired with a hand shower are in our handheld shower head guide, and full valve-and-trim kits with a rain head are in best shower systems. Every flow rating and size below comes from the maker’s own sheet or page, checked against EPA’s WaterSense list and the federal, California and Colorado rules.

How to Choose a Rain Shower Head

Flow rate and your state’s limit

Start with the law, because it decides which version you can buy. The federal limit for any showerhead is 2.5 gpm at 80 psi (10 CFR 430.32(p)). California’s Title 20 sets 1.8 gpm at 80 psi for showerheads made on or after July 1, 2018, and counts all the nozzles running at once. Colorado’s HB23-1161 says a showerhead may not be sold in Colorado unless it is WaterSense-listed. EPA says a WaterSense showerhead uses no more than 2.0 gpm and must pass spray force, spray coverage and pressure compensation tests. Several of these heads come in two or three flows under one model name, so the suffix matters: Kohler’s -G and Moen’s EP are the low-flow versions. Delta says its 2.5 gpm RP50841 will not ship to California. Other states set their own limits too, so check yours before you buy a 2.5 gpm head. Plumber’s note: do not plan to pull the restrictor out of a low-flow head; read removing a shower head flow restrictor first.

How the rating is measured

Kohler rates its Awaken and its 2.5 gpm -Y at 45 psi. Moen and Delta rate theirs at 80 psi, the pressure the federal and California rules use. A 2.5 gpm number at 45 psi and a 2.5 gpm number at 80 psi are not the same test, so compare like with like. Plumber’s note: a rain head spreads its water over a wide face, so it feels gentler than a small head at the same flow. That is the trade you make for coverage.

Wall arm or ceiling arm

Plan on buying the arm separately. Kohler and Delta both say the arm is sold separately and list a 1/2 in. connection, and Moen’s Velocity listing says it connects to your existing shower arm. On a standard wall arm, the head hangs at the arm’s angle, so look for a swivel ball to level it. Kohler lists an adjustable swivel ball joint on the Awaken, and Moen lists a brass swivel ball assembly on the Velocity. To move the head out and up, Delta names a 90 degree wall arm (RP46870) for its raincan. Our shower arm extender guide covers the load a heavy head on a long arm puts on the fitting inside the wall. For a ceiling mount, Kohler says the Awaken installs as a ceiling or wall mount, and Delta names ceiling arms of 3 in., 6 in. and 10 in. Plumber’s note: a ceiling arm needs a water line and a fitting fastened in the ceiling, which is a job for when the ceiling is open. If yours is closed, a wall arm or extender is the simpler route.

Face size and shape

The Kohler Awaken is 9-7/8 in. round. The Delta raincan is 8 in. square, and the Moen Velocity is 8 in. round. If you want a 10 in. square face, Kohler’s Honesty K-26149 is a 10 in. single-function rainhead (square, per the listing) that Kohler says mounts on a wall or ceiling, at 2.5 gpm (K-26149-BL in matte black) or 1.75 gpm as the -G. Plumber’s note: before you order a big face, measure from the arm to the shower door or glass panel, so the head clears it when it swings.

Cleaning the nozzles

Hard water clogs a rain head faster than you notice, because it has many small nozzles. Kohler says its MasterClean sprayface withstands mineral buildup, and Delta’s Touch-Clean rubber holes are made to be wiped clean. If a head loses flow, the fix is in low water pressure in the shower.

Top Pick: 10-Inch Rain Head

Kohler Awaken K-76465-G 10-Inch Rainhead

9-7/8 in. round face, 2 in. tall including the inlet (Kohler drawing) · single function · adjustable swivel ball joint · angled nozzles · MasterClean sprayface · 1.75 gpm rated at 45 psi · 1/2 in.-14 NPT · ceiling or wall mount · shower arm and flange sold separately · EPA WaterSense and California Energy Commission listed on the sheet · KOHLER Faucet Lifetime Limited Warranty

The Awaken is the rain head to buy for most showers. Its face is 9-7/8 in. across on Kohler’s drawing, the largest of the three picks, and Kohler says it installs as a ceiling or wall mount. The adjustable swivel ball joint matters on a wall arm, because it lets you level the face so the water falls straight down. Kohler describes the spray as “a drenching rain experience” from angled nozzles, and says its MasterClean sprayface “withstands mineral buildup.” The -G version is rated 1.75 gpm. Kohler’s sheet lists EPA WaterSense and the California Energy Commission, and EPA’s WaterSense search lists K-76465-G at 1.75 gpm.

Watch the suffix, because Kohler sells three flows under one name. The -G is 1.75 gpm, the plain K-76465 is 2.0 gpm, and the -Y is 2.5 gpm. Kohler rates all three at 45 psi, while Moen and Delta rate theirs at 80 psi, so the numbers are not a straight comparison. The -Y sheet does not list WaterSense or the California Energy Commission. If your state allows 2.5 gpm, the K-76465-Y-BN in brushed nickel is the 2.5 gpm Awaken; its Kohler drawing shows a 9-13/16 in. face. Kohler’s sheet names its Faucet Lifetime Limited Warranty. The warranty sheet’s footnotes put some painted or powder-coated finishes on a one-year term without naming finish codes, and it says cleaners with abrasive cleansers, ammonia, bleach, acids, waxes, alcohol or solvents not recommended for Kohler finishes void the warranty. We link the polished chrome and the matte black. If the finish term matters to you, ask Kohler (1-800-456-4537) which term covers the matte black.

  • Largest face here: 9-7/8 in., per Kohler’s drawing
  • Swivel ball joint to level the face on a wall arm
  • The 1.75 gpm -G is WaterSense and CEC listed, per Kohler
  • Also sold at 2.5 gpm (-Y) where the law allows it
  • Shower arm and flange sold separately
  • Three flow versions share one name; check the suffix
  • Flow rated at 45 psi, not the 80 psi Moen and Delta use
  • Warranty sheet does not say which term covers matte black

Verdict: The rain head to buy for most showers: a 10 in. face for a ceiling or wall arm, with a 1.75 gpm version on EPA’s WaterSense list.

Best Square Rain Head

Delta 52841 Single-Setting Raincan Shower Head (8-Inch Square)

8 in. square face, per Delta · single setting, Soft Rain spray · Touch-Clean rubber spray holes · 1.75 gpm at 80 psi (52841) or 2.5 gpm at 80 psi (RP50841) · 1/2 in. IPS connection · mostly non-metallic, per Delta · shower arm sold separately · lifetime limited warranty (listing)

Delta’s raincan is the square pick. In the Q&A on its 52841 page, Delta says it is an 8 in. square shower head and is “composed of mostly non-metallic components.” The spray is what Delta calls Soft Rain, through Touch-Clean rubber spray holes that Delta says let you wipe calcium and lime build-up away with a finger. The 52841 is rated 1.75 gpm at 80 psi, Delta labels it WaterSense, and EPA’s search lists 52841 at 1.75 gpm. Delta says its shower heads install in less than 20 minutes with no special tools.

Delta also gave the clearest arm advice of the three makers. Its Q&A says the arm is sold separately and recommends a 90 degree shower arm and flange, RP46870 and RP6025, for a wall. For a ceiling it names RP61058, and on the RP50841 page it lists ceiling arms U4996 (3 in.), RP61058 (6 in.) and U4999 (10 in.). Delta also answers that the 52841 works with any new or existing valve trim. The RP50841 is the 2.5 gpm version of the same look. Delta rates it 2.5 gpm at 80 psi, says it “will not be available to ship to California,” and says its ball and nut are brass. We link the chrome 52841 and the matte black RP50841BL. That black listing names flange RP40593 rather than RP6025.

  • Square face for a modern shower
  • Delta names matching wall and ceiling arms
  • The 1.75 gpm 52841 is on EPA’s WaterSense list
  • Rubber spray holes wipe clean, per Delta
  • Mostly non-metallic, per Delta
  • Smaller face than the 10 in. Kohler
  • The 2.5 gpm RP50841 does not ship to California, per Delta
  • Arm sold separately

Verdict: The pick for a square rain head, with Delta’s own list of the arms that fit it.

Best Two-Function Rain Head

Moen Velocity S6320 8-Inch Two-Function Rainshower

8 in. round, 3-1/8 in. tall (Moen drawing) · two functions, rain and rinse, by lever · metal construction · brass swivel ball assembly · self-pressurizing design · 2.5 gpm max at 80 psi (S6320); 1.75 gpm max (S6320EP made after June 30, 2018) · EP models WaterSense certified · lifetime limited warranty to the original homeowner

The Velocity is the rain head with a second spray. Moen’s sheet calls it a two-function rainshower: rain and rinse, picked with a lever. It is the only head here whose maker lists “metal construction,” along with a brass swivel ball assembly, and its drawing shows an 8 in. face and a 3-1/8 in. height. Moen describes a “self pressurizing design” that it says “provides strong performance regardless of line pressure.” The Amazon listing goes further and claims three times the spray power of most rainfall heads. That is Moen’s marketing claim, not something we measured.

Flow depends on the suffix. The plain S6320 is limited to 2.5 gpm at 80 psi. The EP model is limited to 1.75 gpm for units made after June 30, 2018, and Moen says only EP models are certified to WaterSense. EPA’s search lists S6320EP at 1.75 gpm. For California or Colorado, buy the S6320EP; the chrome S6320 we link in the button is the 2.5 gpm model. Moen’s warranty is lifetime limited against leaks, drips and finish defects for the original homeowner. It drops to 10 years in a multifamily building and 5 years in commercial use.

  • Two sprays, rain and rinse, on one head
  • Metal construction and brass swivel ball, per Moen
  • Lifetime limited warranty to the original homeowner
  • EP version is on EPA’s WaterSense list
  • The plain S6320 is 2.5 gpm; not for California or Colorado
  • “Three times the spray power” is Moen’s claim
  • 8 in. face, smaller than the Kohler
  • Moen’s sheet does not say ceiling or wall mount

Verdict: The pick if you want a rain spray and a stronger rinse spray from one head on your existing arm.

Before You Buy

  1. Check your state’s flow rule. California, Colorado and others limit flow; buy the low-flow suffix (Kohler -G, Moen EP, Delta 52841) if yours does.
  2. Read the suffix on the listing. Kohler and Moen sell two or three flows under one model name.
  3. Plan the arm. Every head here comes without an arm. Decide on wall or ceiling, and measure how far out and how high the head will sit.
  4. Check the clearance. Measure to the shower door or glass so a wide face clears it.
  5. Know your valve. If the shower valve is old, check its rating before you pair it with a low-flow head, per Kohler’s note on the Honesty sheet.

Installing a Rain Shower Head

Kohler’s sheets say to install the product according to the installation instructions, so follow the sheet in the box, and Delta says its heads install with no special tools. Plumber’s note: unscrew the old head, clean the arm threads, wrap them with thread seal tape in the direction the head turns on, and thread the new head on by hand. If you are changing the arm too, turn the water off at the shower valve or the main first, hold the new arm with a cloth so it does not mar, and seal the arm threads before you set the flange. Level the face with the swivel ball, then run the shower and check the joint for drips. A wide head on a long arm is a lever on the fitting in the wall. If the arm moves when you push on the head, stop and have the fitting checked before tile damage starts.

FAQ

What flow rate is allowed for a rain shower head?

The federal limit is 2.5 gpm at 80 psi (10 CFR 430.32(p)). California’s Title 20 sets 1.8 gpm at 80 psi for showerheads made on or after July 1, 2018. Colorado’s HB23-1161 says a showerhead may not be sold there unless it is WaterSense-listed, and EPA says WaterSense showerheads use no more than 2.0 gpm. Check your own state’s rule before you buy a 2.5 gpm head.

Can a rain shower head go on a regular wall arm?

Yes. Kohler says the Awaken installs on a ceiling or wall arm, and Delta names a 90 degree wall arm for its raincan. On a wall arm the head points out at an angle, so a swivel ball matters: Kohler and Moen list one, which lets you level the face. To bring the head farther out, see our shower arm extender guide, and mind the load a heavy head puts on the fitting in the wall.

Do rain shower heads feel weaker than regular heads?

They can feel softer, because the flow spreads over a wider face. EPA says WaterSense testing checks spray force and coverage, and its Version 1.1 spec revised the spray force test to fit water-efficient rain showers. If you want force more than coverage, a high-pressure shower head is the better buy. If every head in the house is weak, start with low water pressure in the shower.

Which rain shower heads can I buy in California or Colorado?

Look for a low-flow model on EPA’s WaterSense list. Of the heads here, EPA lists the Kohler K-76465-G, Delta 52841 and Moen S6320EP at 1.75 gpm. Delta says the 2.5 gpm RP50841 will not ship to California. The Kohler -Y, Moen S6320 and Delta RP50841 are 2.5 gpm models, above both California’s limit and WaterSense.

Do I need a new shower valve for a rain head?

Usually not. A fixed rain head threads onto the shower arm like any other head, and Delta says its 52841 works with any new or existing valve trim. One caution from Kohler’s Honesty sheet: it says to use that 2.5 gpm head with automatic compensating valves rated at 2.10 gpm or less, and the 1.75 gpm version with valves rated 1.40 gpm or less. If your shower valve is old, check its rating before you pair it with a low-flow head.

Bottom Line

A rain shower head is chosen by flow, arm and face size, in that order. The Kohler Awaken K-76465-G is the 10 in. head for most showers. The Delta 52841 is the square option with Delta’s own arm list, and the Moen Velocity adds a rinse spray. Buy the low-flow suffix if your state requires it, plan the arm before the head arrives, and level the face so the water falls straight down.
