For a shower valve with a hole too big for the trim, the best escutcheon plate is the Westbrass CP640 One-Hole Remodel Plate, a 13 in wide cover with a 5-1/2 in center hole made for Moen and Delta single-handle valves. If you are covering where 2 or 3 old handles were, Westbrass makes matching CP642 and CP643 plates. For a Moen Posi-Temp valve, Moen sells its own 178755 remodel cover plate. For chrome pipe escutcheons at sink and toilet stub-outs, buy by pipe type and size, split or solid, and depth, as shown below.

An escutcheon is any trim ring or plate that covers the hole where a valve or pipe comes through the wall. Two very different parts share the name: the large trim plate behind a shower handle, and the small chrome ring around a supply or drain stub-out. This guide covers both. If you only need the right trim for your valve, start with our Moen trim guide or Delta MultiChoice trim guide.

BEST OVERSIZED PLATE · 13 X 7-1/2 IN · MOEN AND DELTA
Westbrass CP640: the oversized escutcheon for a bad tile cut
Choose it when the hole around a single-handle Moen or Delta valve is too big for the stock trim plate, or you swapped a 2 or 3 handle valve for a single-handle pressure balancing valve and do not want to rebuild the wall. Westbrass’s product page (westbrass.com) lists a 13 in overall width, 7-1/2 in at the tallest point, a 5-1/2 in center hole, 9-1/2 in screw-to-screw spacing, and two screws with mounting bars in the box. It comes in polished chrome, polished nickel, satin nickel, oil rubbed bronze, polished brass, matte black and white.
Your valve’s own trim still goes on top. The remodel plate covers the damage; the handle and trim plate from Moen or Delta finish the look.
Skip it if the damaged area is bigger than the plate or the tile around it is loose. Fix the wall first. A cover plate over wet, soft backer board only hides a leak.

BEST FOR 2- AND 3-HANDLE LAYOUTS · 8 IN CENTERS
Westbrass CP642 and CP643: new trim on an old 2 or 3 handle valve
Choose them when you are keeping a 2-handle or 3-handle valve but the old escutcheons and sleeves left ugly holes. Per the CP642 (westbrass.com) and CP643 (westbrass.com) pages, both are 13 in wide and 7-1/2 in tall, with 1-1/2 in holes on 8 in centers (CP643 measures the 8 in between its outer holes, with the diverter in the middle).
Measure the center-to-center distance between your valve stems before you order. If your stems are not on 8 in centers, these plates will not line up.
Skip them if you are switching to a single-handle valve. That is the CP640’s job.

BRAND-MATCHED · MOEN POSI-TEMP
Moen 178755: the Moen remodel plate for Posi-Temp
Choose it when the valve is a Moen Posi-Temp and you want a plate from the valve maker in a Moen finish. Moen’s 178755 page (maker page: shop.moen.com/products/178755) lists it as a remodel cover plate (escutcheon) that fits Posi-Temp valves, in chrome, brushed nickel and oil rubbed bronze. The link below is the chrome plate. Moen did not list dimensions on the page, so compare it to your opening before you buy.
Skip it if your Moen valve is not a Posi-Temp, or if you need a known size. The Westbrass CP640 lists its exact size.
Shower valve escutcheons: measure before you buy
- Identify the valve. The handle and the trim plate have to match the valve body in the wall. Find the brand and series first; our Moen and Delta trim guides show how.
- Measure the damage. Measure the widest and tallest points of the broken tile or hole. A remodel plate needs to cover that plus enough solid tile around it for the plate to sit flat and the screws to bite.
- Check depth. If the valve sits too deep or too shallow in the wall, a bigger plate will not fix it. Many valve makers sell extension kits, and some mark a depth range on the plaster guard.
- Count the stems. One handle, two handles or three, and the spacing between them, decide which plate fits.
Changing from a 2- or 3-handle valve to a single handle means replacing the valve in the wall. That is soldering, PEX or press work on hot and cold lines, and many places want a permit. Hire a licensed plumber if you are not sure of the work.
Chrome pipe escutcheons for stub-outs
The small chrome ring at a sink or toilet supply, or around a drain arm, is also an escutcheon. People call it an escutcheon chrome ring or a flange. It does one job: cover the drywall hole so it looks finished. Buying the wrong size is the common mistake, because the hole in the ring has to fit the pipe, not the shut-off valve.
| Your situation | Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Copper stub-out | Escutcheon marked for copper tube (CTS) of your size | Copper is a different outside size than iron pipe of the same nominal size |
| Threaded brass or galvanized nipple | Escutcheon marked IPS of your size | Iron pipe size rings fit threaded nipples |
| PEX stub-out | Check the PEX maker’s stub-out or sleeve size, then match the ring | PEX is often sleeved with a copper stub-out ell |
| Valve already on, can’t remove it | Split (hinged) escutcheon | It opens and snaps around the pipe |
| Pipe sits back from the wall face or hole is ragged | Deep escutcheon | The deeper cup reaches the wall and hides more |
| Flush, clean hole | Shallow (low-profile) escutcheon | Sits tight to the wall |
| Sink drain arm | Escutcheon sized for the trap arm tube | Drain tube and supply pipe sizes are different |
How to size it: read the pipe type off the stub-out or measure its outside diameter with a tape or caliper, then match the size printed on the escutcheon package. Our guide to stop valves by pipe type shows how to tell copper, iron pipe, PEX and CPVC apart. Match the finish to the angle stop and supply line so the whole set looks the same.
What to buy: a solid, one-piece chrome escutcheon before the valve goes on in new work, and a split one when the valve is already there. The package size and pipe type are what matter.
One linked example: the linked Keeney K21135 is a split floor and ceiling plate. The Keeney maker page (oatey.ca) describes the plastic plate family and its chrome-plated finish. Check that the pipe size on the listing matches your stub-out before you order, and buy a different size if it does not.

Sealing and finishing
- Shower plates: follow the trim maker’s instructions on sealing. Many call for a bead of silicone around the plate where it meets tile, and some installers leave a small gap at the bottom so any water that gets behind can drain. See our silicone sealant guide.
- Pipe escutcheons: they are trim, not a seal. A dab of clear silicone can stop a loose ring from sliding, but do not count on it to stop water.
- Screws: use the screws in the box and do not overtighten into tile.
Escutcheon plate FAQ
What is an escutcheon plate?
It is the trim plate or ring that covers the hole where a valve or pipe comes through the wall. In a shower it is the large plate behind the handle. Under a sink it is the small chrome ring around the supply or drain pipe.
How do I cover a hole that is too big for my shower trim?
Use an oversized remodel plate that fits your valve, like the Westbrass CP640 for Moen and Delta single-handle valves. It is 13 inches wide and 7-1/2 inches tall. Make sure the tile around the hole is solid first.
What is the difference between split and solid escutcheons?
A solid escutcheon is one piece and must slide on before the valve or fitting. A split, or hinged, escutcheon opens so you can put it around a pipe that already has a valve on it.
When do I need a deep escutcheon?
Use a deep one when the pipe comes out back from the finished wall surface or the hole is ragged. The deeper cup reaches the wall and covers more. Use a shallow one on a clean, flush hole.
Can I put a single-handle trim on a two-handle valve?
No. The trim must match the valve. To go from two or three handles to one, the valve in the wall has to be replaced, then a remodel plate covers the old holes. That is a job for a licensed plumber in most homes.
