Quick answer from a licensed plumber: Buy the PUR Plus FM2500V: NSF and WQA both list it for NSF/ANSI 42, 53 (including lead) and 401, and PUR rates the filter at 100 gallons or 3 months. IAPMO R&T also lists it under 53 for Total PFAS. None of these fit pull-out or spray faucets.
Our pick for most sinks: the PUR Plus FM2500V vertical faucet filter. Check the PUR Plus FM2500V on Amazon
A faucet-mount filter clips onto the spout and switches between filtered and plain water. It needs a spout with a removable aerator. This guide compares four faucet filters from PUR, Brita and Culligan using each maker’s data sheet and manual and the public certifier listings. For a pitcher, see our water filter pitcher guide; for under the sink, see best under-sink water filters.

PUR Plus FM2500V Vertical Faucet Filter
Vertical faucet mount · PUR Plus filter (RF-9999) · 100 gallons or up to 3 months · 0.52 gpm rated service flow · NSF, WQA and IAPMO list 42, 53 and 401 · W 6.4 x H 5.4 x L 2.8 in (PUR)
PUR’s page for the FM2500V lists a filter that lasts 100 gallons or up to 3 months, an on/off lever and one filter in the box. NSF’s public listing names the FM2500V with the RF-9999 filter under NSF/ANSI 42 (chlorine, nominal particulate Class I, taste and odor), 53 (asbestos, chlordane, lead, mercury, toxaphene and VOC) and 401 (15 named compounds including microplastics, our count). WQA lists the same model under 42, 53 and 401.
PUR’s current data sheet (October 2025) gives average lead reduction of 99.70% at pH 6.5 and 99.60% at pH 8.5, and chlorine at 98.71%. Mercury is lower: 78.59% and 81.58%. The sheet also has a Total PFAS row at 99.92%. NSF’s and WQA’s listings for this model do not name PFAS, but IAPMO R&T’s NSF/ANSI 53 listing does: it lists the FM2500V and PFM410F for lead, mercury, Total PFAS and VOC. The 99.92% average is PUR’s own figure.
- NSF, WQA and IAPMO R&T all list the FM2500V for 42, 53 and 401
- IAPMO lists lead, mercury, Total PFAS and VOC under 53; NSF and WQA also list lead
- Filter change light and on/off lever, per PUR
- Two-year system warranty in PUR’s manual (filter: 30 days)
- Mercury averages 78.59% and 81.58% on PUR’s data sheet, lower than its other rows
- PUR says it does not filter microbes
- Not for pull-out or handheld faucets (PUR)
- PUR gives 82°F (data sheet) and 100°F (manual) as the maximum water temperature
Verdict: The pick when you want the longest certified list in a simple vertical unit and your faucet has a plain threaded aerator.
PUR Plus PFM410F Horizontal Faucet Filter
Horizontal faucet mount · PUR Plus filter (RF-9999) · 100 gallons or up to 3 months · 0.52 gpm rated service flow · NSF, WQA and IAPMO list 42, 53 and 401 · W 6.8 x H 5.2 x L 2.9 in (PUR)
PUR’s page lists the PFM410F as a horizontal PUR Plus system with a Filter Change Light and one filter. NSF lists the PFM410F with both the RF-3375 and RF-9999 filters under 42, 53 and 401, with the same 53 claims as the FM2500V: asbestos, chlordane, lead, mercury, toxaphene and VOC. WQA lists it under 42, 53, 401 and CSA B483.1, and IAPMO R&T lists it under 42, 53 (lead, mercury, Total PFAS, VOC) and 401.
It takes the same filter family, so the data sheet numbers above apply to its filter. The Amazon title calls the finish brass while PUR’s page lists the color as Sea Glass, and the Amazon listing says it is not compatible with pull-out, hand-held, spray-style or sensor faucets. We did not find a manual for this model.
- NSF lists the PFM410F for 42, 53 and 401 with both filter models
- Horizontal design, per PUR
- Same RF-9999 filter as the vertical PUR Plus
- Filter Change Light, per PUR
- Same mercury and microbe limits as the vertical PUR Plus
- Amazon title says brass; PUR’s page says Sea Glass
- Not for pull-out, hand-held, spray-style or sensor faucets (Amazon listing)
Verdict: The pick when a vertical unit will not clear your cabinet or window and you want the same PUR Plus filter.
Brita Elite Faucet Water Filter System (SAFF-100 / FF-100)
Faucet mount · Brita FR-200 filter · 100 gallons, about 4 months (Brita) · 0.58 gpm, tested at 60 psig · WQA lists 42, 53 and 401 · NSF does not list it
Brita’s faucet page lists Elite systems with a 100-gallon, 4-month filter that removes 99% of lead. Brita’s data sheet covers models FF-100 and SAFF-100 with the FR-200 filter and says WQA certifies them. WQA’s listing: 42 (chlorine, nominal particulate Class I, taste and odor), 53 (asbestos, chlordane, lead, toxaphene, VOC) and 401 (bisphenol A, estrone, ibuprofen, microplastics, naproxen, nonyl phenol, phenytoin). NSF’s own database lists no Brita faucet system.
The Amazon model line reads SAFF-100/FF-100, which is two versions. Brita’s SAFF-100 guide describes an indicator that signals after about 100 gallons. The FF-100 guide describes one that signals at 100 gallons or 4 months, whichever comes first. Check which is in your box.
- WQA lists 42, 53 and 401 for both FF-100 and SAFF-100
- Data sheet lists lead at 99.9% (pH 6.5 and 8.5) and chlorine at 99.0%
- Two faucet adapters and washers in the box (Brita guide)
- Sheet states 0.58 gpm and the 60 psig test basis
- Listed by WQA only; NSF lists no Brita faucet system
- No mercury and no PFAS claim on the sheet or the listing
- Cannot attach to faucets with a built-in spray (Brita)
- FF-100 guide: one-year warranty, filter 30 days
Verdict: The pick when you want a Brita system with WQA-listed lead, chlorine and 401 claims and two filters in the box, and a WQA listing is enough for you.
Culligan CULFMWH Faucet Mount Filter
Faucet mount · Culligan CULFMF01 filter · 400 gallons, 4 months (Culligan) · 0.65 gpm, tested at 60 psi · WQA lists 42, 53 (PFOA, PFOS) and 401 (microplastics) · NSF does not list it
Culligan’s manual (Rev C, 4/25) for the CULFMCH and CULFMWH lists a 400-gallon rated service life and a filter-life light. Its performance data shows chlorine at 99.1%, Class I particulates at 97.0%, PFOA and PFOS above 98.9%, and microplastics at 97.0%. WQA’s listing for both models matches: 42 (chlorine, nominal particulate Class I, taste and odor), 53 (PFOS and PFOA) and 401 (microplastics). NSF’s database lists no Culligan faucet system.
There is no lead claim in the manual or on WQA’s listing, so skip it if lead is your reason to filter. Culligan’s documents also disagree on timing: the manual’s specs and the Amazon listing say 4 months, its timer text says the light turns red at 180 days, and a 2021 Culligan blog post about the ZeroWater-branded version says 6 months. Amazon.com did not sell the CULFMWH system on our check date, so the button goes to the CULFMF01 filter, which the listing says fits the CULFMWH and CULFMCH.
- Longest rated filter life of the four, at 400 gallons (maker ratings)
- WQA lists PFOS and PFOA under 53 for the CULFMWH and CULFMCH
- Two-year limited warranty on the system; filter and battery are not covered
- Filter-life indicator light with a reset button (manual)
- No lead claim in the manual or on WQA’s listing
- Listed by WQA only; NSF lists no Culligan faucet system
- Culligan’s documents give 4 months, 180 days and 6 months
- Uses a CR2032 battery, estimated at 1 year (manual); will not work on pull-out or hand-held faucets
Verdict: The pick when a 400-gallon rating matters more than a lead claim. The button below is for the refill filter only; Amazon.com did not sell the system on our check date.

Certified, or Only Tested To? What the Listings Show
We checked each model in NSF’s public certified-product listing (current as of September 29, 2026), WQA’s Find Certified Products search and IAPMO R&T’s Product Listing Directory. The numbers mean:
- NSF/ANSI 42: aesthetic effects, such as chlorine taste and odor and particles.
- NSF/ANSI 53: health effects, such as lead, asbestos and mercury. PFAS claims fall under 53 too: Total PFAS on IAPMO’s listing for the PUR models, and PFOA and PFOS on WQA’s listing for Culligan.
- NSF/ANSI 401: emerging compounds that the sheets call “incidental contaminants,” such as microplastics and some drug residues.
- NSF/ANSI 58: reverse osmosis systems. NSF’s 58 search for PUR’s maker returns no products, and no pick here carries a 58 claim. For RO, see distiller vs reverse osmosis.
- P473: NSF’s drinking water treatment unit standards list has no P473 entry, and no document we read names it. Culligan’s manual and WQA put PFOA and PFOS under NSF/ANSI 53.
Who lists what, on September 29:
- PUR (FM2500V, PFM410F): NSF, WQA and IAPMO R&T. Only IAPMO’s 53 listing (file W-29904, effective November 13, 2025) names Total PFAS. The Amazon listing says WQA certifies the FM2500V for lead and NSF for microplastics; both appear in the listings.
- Brita (FF-100, SAFF-100): WQA only. NSF lists Brita pitchers and plumbed-in units, no faucet system.
- Culligan (CULFMWH, CULFMCH): WQA only. NSF lists no Culligan faucet system.
Wording differs by maker. PUR’s sheet says its systems were “tested according to” 42, 53 and 401, and its footer names IAPMO R&T as certifier. Brita’s sheet says “tested according to” and names WQA as certifier. Brita’s FF-100 and SAFF-100 user’s guides say NSF International and WQA both certified the system, but NSF’s database listed no Brita faucet system on September 29. Culligan’s manual says “tested and certified to WQA.” IAPMO R&T’s directory lists both PUR models under NSF/ANSI 53-2024 for lead, mercury, Total PFAS and VOC, so PUR’s Total PFAS claim is certified by IAPMO; the 99.92% figure is PUR’s own average.
What They Do Not Remove
Not listed means no claim. It does not prove the filter leaves a contaminant untouched. From the data sheets and listings:
- Fluoride, nitrate, arsenic and hexavalent chromium: none of the PUR, Brita or Culligan documents we read lists them. For those, look at reverse osmosis.
- Chloramine: the sheets list chlorine; none names chloramine, which some utilities use.
- Microbes: PUR says it does not filter microbes. Brita and Culligan say not to use theirs on microbiologically unsafe water or water of unknown quality without disinfection.
- Per pick: Brita has no mercury or PFAS claim, Culligan has no lead or VOC claim, and PUR’s mercury averages are the lowest numbers on its sheet.
Rated Flow: Read the Basis
- PUR: 0.52 gpm rated service flow on the data sheet; NSF lists .52. The sheet gives no single test pressure for it.
- Brita: 0.58 gpm; the sheet says the system was tested at 60 psig using a minimum flow rate of 0.58 gpm.
- Culligan: 0.65 gpm rated service flow at 60 psi in the manual; operating pressure 30 to 100 psi.
These are lab ratings from different test setups, so we do not rank the picks on them.
Will It Fit Your Faucet?
- Not for: pull-out, hand-held or spray faucets. PUR’s support page says pull-out and handheld faucets are not compatible; Culligan’s manual says it will not work on pull-out and hand-held faucets; Brita’s guides say it cannot attach to a faucet with a built-in spray feature. No maker names pull-down faucets. A plumber’s note: a pull-down head is a spray head, not a threaded aerator. See pull-down vs pull-out kitchen faucets if you are replacing the faucet.
- Start with the aerator. All three makers have you remove it first; see how to clean a faucet aerator if it is stuck.
- Threads: try external threads directly. For internal threads, use an adapter. PUR’s manual shows four adapters (A and B external, C and D internal), while PUR’s support page says three, so count what is in your box. Brita includes two adapters and washers. Culligan says its faucet adapters and washers are included.
- If nothing fits: PUR’s manual says to contact PUR for a free adapter and not to return the unit. Brita says to call. Culligan says to add your faucet’s aerator gasket, or buy the right thread adapter. See our faucet aerator guide.
- Water temperature: Use cold water. Brita and Culligan set the limit at 100°F; PUR’s manual says 100°F, its data sheet and support page 82°F.
Replacement Filters and How Long They Last
- PUR: the RF-9999 (PUR Plus) or RF-3375 (PUR) filter; PUR’s manual says change at 100 gallons or 90+ days, whichever comes first. Check the PUR Plus 2-pack (RF-9999) on Amazon. PUR says compatible replacements are not guaranteed to match.
- Brita: the FR-200 filter, at 100 gallons or about 4 months. Check the Brita Elite replacement filters (chrome, 2 count) on Amazon.
- Culligan: the CULFMF01 at 400 gallons or 4 months. Check the Culligan CULFMF01 on Amazon.
All three makers say to flush a new filter for 5 minutes. Our arithmetic: using a full 100-gallon PUR filter in 90 days takes about 1.1 gallons a day, and a full 400-gallon Culligan filter in 120 days about 3.3.
FAQ
What is the best faucet water filter?
For the longest certified list, the PUR Plus FM2500V: NSF and WQA both list it for NSF/ANSI 42, 53 (including lead) and 401. The PUR models are the only picks here listed for both lead and PFAS (IAPMO R&T). For the longest-rated filter, the Culligan CULFMWH at 400 gallons, but it has no lead claim. For Brita, the Elite, with WQA-listed lead, chlorine and 401 claims.
Do faucet water filters remove lead?
The PUR Plus FM2500V and PFM410F and the Brita Elite (FF-100 and SAFF-100) have lead listed under NSF/ANSI 53, PUR by NSF and WQA and Brita by WQA. The Culligan CULFMWH has no lead claim in its manual or on WQA’s listing. A filter cannot fix a lead source you have not found; if you suspect lead, test your water.
Do faucet filters remove PFAS?
Two listings we found name PFAS. IAPMO R&T lists the PUR Plus FM2500V and PFM410F under NSF/ANSI 53 for Total PFAS (with lead, mercury and VOC). WQA lists the Culligan CULFMWH and CULFMCH under 53 for PFOA and PFOS. NSF’s and WQA’s listings for the PUR models do not name PFAS. PUR’s 99.92% Total PFAS and Culligan’s above-98.9% PFOA and PFOS are each maker’s own averages from different tests, so do not rank them.
Can I use a faucet filter on a pull-down or pull-out faucet?
PUR says pull-out and handheld faucets are not compatible. Culligan’s manual says the same, and Brita’s guide bars faucets with a built-in spray. None names pull-down faucets, but a pull-down head is not a threaded aerator (a plumber’s note). You need a removable aerator.
How often should I change a faucet filter?
By the maker’s rating: PUR at 100 gallons or 3 months, Brita at 100 gallons or about 4 months, and Culligan at 400 gallons or 4 months (the same manual’s timer text says 180 days). Whichever limit comes first counts.

Bottom Line
Pick by the contaminant you care about, then check your faucet. The PUR Plus FM2500V has the longest listed claims, the PFM410F is the same filter in a horizontal case, the Brita Elite has a shorter WQA-listed list, and the Culligan CULFMWH has the longest rated filter and WQA-listed PFOA and PFOS claims, but no lead claim. Only the PUR models are listed for both lead and PFAS (IAPMO).
