For a single small commercial sink, the Canplas Endura Compact 3907A02 is rated 7 gpm; for a larger sink where height is tight, the Endura Lo-Pro 3925A02LO is rated 25 gpm and stands 11 inches tall. Size by flow to match your fixtures and follow your local code and sewer authority, which often regulate grease interceptors.

This guide covers grease traps, also called grease interceptors, for kitchen sinks.
Grease interceptors compared
| Model | Flow and grease capacity (maker) | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Endura Compact 3907A02 | 7 gpm, rated 14 lb (31.95 lb actual) | A single small sink, such as a café or prep sink |
| Endura Lo-Pro 3925A02LO | 25 gpm, 50 lb rated (62.59 lb actual), 11 in. tall | A larger sink where the unit must sit low on the floor |
A grease trap, or grease interceptor, sits in the drain line from a sink and holds back fats, oils and grease (FOG) so they cool and float to the top instead of clogging the sewer. Restaurants and commercial kitchens use them, and many sewer authorities require them. Most homes do not need one.
Endura Compact 3907A02: 7 gpm
Choose the Endura Compact 3907A02 for a single small sink. Canplas’s sell sheet (canplas.com) lists a 7 gpm interceptor rated for 14 pounds of grease (31.95 pounds actual), 95.5 percent average efficiency under ASME A112.14.3, 12.96 gallons of liquid capacity, 2-inch mechanical connections, a 300-pound cover load, operation up to 220°F, an empty weight of 13.8 pounds and a supplied compact flow control. Canplas says it is made of injection-molded engineered thermoplastic with a limited lifetime warranty.

Sizing: flow rate first
Interceptors are rated by flow in gallons per minute and by how much grease they hold. The flow rating has to match the fixture draining into it, and a flow control is installed ahead of the unit so water does not rush through faster than it can separate. Canplas says its compact units now ship with a compact flow control and specifies an accessible flow control at the rated gpm.
Sizing rules come from the plumbing code your area has adopted and from your sewer authority, which often has its own fats, oils and grease program. Ask them before you buy; the inspector will want the unit and flow control to match the fixtures.
Certifications to look for
Canplas lists ASME A112.14.3 performance figures for these units and specifies certification to PDI-G101 or CSA B481, with IAPMO or UPC listing where locally applicable. Local rules decide which listing is required, so check before ordering.
Cleaning and maintenance
A grease interceptor only works if it is emptied. Canplas’s maintenance guide (canplas.com) notes that some people clean at two inches of grease and others every 90 days, but says the right interval depends on how much grease you release and on local requirements: monitor the accumulation rate and clean when it approaches the grease capacity on the unit’s marking plate.
Canplas’s cleaning steps, in short:
- If time allows, melt a large block of ice in a connected sink to congeal the grease.
- Remove the covers and skim the top; store and dispose of the contents as the local authority requires.
- Vacuum solids from the bottom, then remove the remaining liquid.
- Scrape and clean the baffles, inlets, outlets, ports and sides, rinse and vacuum again.
- Inspect the parts, refill with clean water and replace the covers, replacing any that are cracked.
Canplas also says the owner is responsible for the interceptor, should be on site if a pumper cleans it, and should keep detailed records, since they are the best defense if an inspector questions the maintenance.
Check with your sewer authority before adding enzymes or other products to an interceptor; our enzyme vs chemical drain cleaner guide explains what those products do.
Do you need one at home?
Grease that gets past an interceptor, or into a drain without one, cools in the pipe and builds up on the walls until it narrows the line. Canplas notes that grease accumulation causes sewer blockages and overflows that are a health risk to businesses and the public, which is why sewer authorities take interceptors seriously.
Most homes do not have or need a grease interceptor. The better habit is keeping grease out of the drain: wipe pans with a paper towel, let fats cool and put them in the trash, and run a sink strainer. Our basket strainer guide covers strainers, and our main drain clog guide explains how grease builds up in sewer lines.
If you run a home-based food business, check with your local health department and sewer authority; they may require an interceptor.
Installation basics
Install the interceptor level, with the flow control on the inlet side and room above it to open the lid and lift out the baffles; Canplas notes the Lo-Pro needs less than 5 inches of extra clearance for that. Use the mechanical joint couplings Canplas specifies, and follow its installation guide. Venting and trap requirements come from your local code.
Interceptors can sit on the floor next to the sink, under the sink, or recessed into the floor. Canplas designed the Lo-Pro for tight on-floor installs, and it sells extension kits for recessed Endura installations. Plastic units like Endura are light to carry and do not rust; steel units are also common in commercial kitchens. Whatever the material, the unit has to be reachable for cleaning, because a trap that is hard to open tends not to get cleaned.
Because grease interceptors are often inspected, this is usually a job for a licensed plumber working to the sewer authority’s requirements.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a grease trap and a grease interceptor?
The terms are often used interchangeably. Interceptor is the term used in standards like ASME A112.14.3 and PDI-G101 for units rated by flow and grease capacity.
What size grease trap do I need?
Match the flow rating to the fixtures draining into it and follow your local code and sewer authority. Canplas makes Endura units from 7 gpm up.
How often should a grease trap be cleaned?
Canplas says to monitor the accumulation rate and clean when grease approaches the capacity on the unit’s marking plate, while following any local schedule.
Does a house need a grease trap?
Most homes do not. Keep grease out of the drain instead, and check local rules if you run a food business from home.
What is Endura?
Endura is Canplas’s line of thermoplastic grease interceptors and related drainage products.
How we chose
This document-based guide makes no hands-on testing claim. We read Canplas’s Endura Compact and Lo-Pro sell sheets and its interceptor maintenance article. Other Endura sizes and a Zurn steel trap were checked, but we could not find current maker sheets matching the listings, so they are not linked. On October 15, 2026, both linked standard new offers showed stock or limited stock. Read our selection method and about Plumbing Picks.
