Getting a main line cleared is a relief. Getting it cleared for the third time in two years is a message.
A clog that keeps coming back is not bad luck, and it usually isn’t because the last person did a poor job. It’s because clearing a line and fixing a line are two different jobs, and only one of them was done. A cable punched a hole through the blockage, water started moving, everyone went home. Whatever was catching the debris is still down there, doing exactly what it did before.
The useful question isn’t “how do I clear it again.” It’s “what’s down there that keeps catching things.” Here’s how to work that out — starting with something you already know.
The Timing Tells You the Cause
Before anyone puts a camera down your line, the pattern of the backups narrows it down considerably. Think about when yours happen:

The Five Things That Actually Cause It
1. Tree roots
The most common reason an older line clogs on a schedule. Roots don’t attack a healthy pipe — they find moisture escaping from a joint or a hairline crack and grow toward it. Once inside, they fan out into a mesh that catches everything passing by, especially paper and wipes.
The tell is the seasonality. Roots grow hardest in spring and fall, so backups that cluster in those months are pointing straight at them.
Cutting them out does not remove them. A cable shears the roots off at the pipe wall; the root system outside is untouched and grows straight back. That’s why root jobs come back on a cycle — and why the cycle tends to get shorter each time.
2. A belly in the line
A belly is a section that has sagged below the run’s slope, usually from soil settling or poor bedding when it was laid. It holds standing water permanently. Solids settle in the low spot instead of being carried along, and they accumulate until the line closes up.
A bellied line clogs at the same place, over and over, with no seasonal pattern. Cabling clears the accumulation and the belly immediately starts collecting again. This one genuinely cannot be fixed by cleaning — the pipe is the wrong shape.
3. Grease
Grease goes down warm and liquid and cools somewhere further along, where it congeals on the pipe wall. It builds in layers, narrowing the pipe, and it grabs anything fibrous that touches it.
The giveaway is that backups follow use rather than season — the week after a holiday, or after a run of big meals. It’s also the one cause on this list you can genuinely reduce yourself: keep grease out of the drain entirely. Not down the disposal, not chased with hot water. Into a can, into the bin.
4. “Flushable” wipes
They aren’t. Toilet paper is designed to lose its structure in water within seconds; wipes are designed not to. They arrive intact, and the moment they meet a root, a rough patch of old cast iron, or a belly, they catch and start a mat.
If wipes have been going down the toilet, stopping is free and it’s the highest-leverage thing on this page. Nothing else you do to the line matters as much if the mats keep forming.
5. The pipe itself
Sometimes nothing is doing this — the pipe is simply old, and its material has a known failure mode:
- Clay — common in mid-century and older homes. Strong, but laid in short sections with a joint every few feet. Every joint is a potential root entry.
- Orangeburg — a tar-impregnated fiber pipe used for a stretch around the mid-1900s. It softens and deforms into an oval over time. If you have it, it’s failing; that isn’t a maintenance question.
- Cast iron — scales and roughens internally with age. The interior loses diameter and gains texture, and texture catches debris.
How You Find Out Which One It Is
Get the line scoped. A camera inspection sends a video head down the pipe and shows the actual condition — where the blockage forms, what’s causing it, whether there’s a belly, and how the pipe material is holding up. The camera goes in through a cleanout — here is where yours should be.
This is the step people skip, and skipping it is why some homeowners pay for the same clearing three or four times. A scope turns “it keeps clogging” into “there’s a root mass at 42 feet, at a joint” — and those are completely different problems with completely different price tags.

What Actually Fixes It
Roughly in order of how permanent they are:
Cabling / snaking. Opens a channel through the blockage. Fast and comparatively cheap, and it’s the right first move when you need water flowing tonight. It does not remove root systems, it does not level a belly, and it barely touches a grease layer. Treat it as relief, not repair.
Hydro-jetting. High-pressure water that scours the pipe wall rather than boring through the middle. Genuinely removes grease and root hair and restores the pipe’s actual diameter — a real step up from cabling for grease and scale. But it is cleaning, not repair: it cannot fix a belly or a broken joint, and on already-fragile pipe an experienced operator will tell you it’s the wrong tool.
Root treatment. A foaming herbicide that kills root mass inside the line and slows regrowth. Buys time on a root problem. Doesn’t repair the crack that let them in.
Lining (CIPP). A resin sleeve cured in place inside the existing pipe, forming a new seamless pipe within the old one. Seals joints against roots and needs little or no digging. Doesn’t correct a belly — a lined sag is still a sag.
Spot repair or full replacement. Digging out and replacing the failed section, or the whole run. The only real answer for a belly, a collapse, or Orangeburg. It’s the expensive one, and for those causes it’s also the only one that ends the problem.

When to Stop Paying to Clear It
There’s a point where repeat clearings stop being the cheap option and quietly become the expensive one. You’ve reached it when:
- You’ve cleared the same line three or more times, or
- The interval between backups is getting shorter, or
- A scope has already shown a belly, a collapse, or Orangeburg
The first two mean whatever’s down there is winning. The third means cleaning was never going to be the answer. Add up what you’ve already spent on clearings — for a lot of people that arithmetic is the moment the repair stops looking expensive.
One Thing Worth Checking First: Whose Pipe Is It?
The pipe from your house to the connection point is your lateral, and it’s yours to maintain. Past that connection, it’s the municipality’s main.
