Point drain or linear drain?
A point drain like the Clearflo sits near the middle of the floor, and the floor slopes to it from all sides. A linear drain sits along one wall, so the floor slopes in one direction, which suits large-format tile and curbless showers. The linear channel is the bigger job: it has to be set at the right height before the floor goes in, and its outlet and grate are bought separately. Waterproofing details depend on the shower system you use; follow Kohler’s installation instructions and the membrane maker’s.

Before you buy: measure and match
Start with what is under the shower. If there is a one-piece base, measure the hole in the base and the pipe below it; the K-9132 is made for a 2-inch pipe and lists a gasket for plastic pipe. If you are building a tiled floor, decide the pipe size first; the Clearflo connects to either 2-inch or 3-inch PVC. Then think about tile thickness, since the Clearflo’s reversible collar sets how high the grate sits.
For a linear drain, measure the wall the drain will run along. Kohler’s drawing shows the K-80646 channel adjustable from about 37-1/4 to 61-1/4 inches overall, and the grate comes in 36, 48 and 60-inch lengths that can be trimmed.
