To protect a customer’s home during plumbing work, put a slip-resistant drop cloth such as Trimaco Stay Put Canvas Plus (04321) on the walking path, and build dust walls from plastic sheeting held up by ZipWall 10 poles (ZP2), with a ZipWall zipper for the doorway. Trimaco’s 4 mil plastic drop cloth (03504) is the sheeting pick for walls and for covering furniture. Painter’s tape holds plastic edges to finished walls, and a heavy poly tarp belongs outside, under the dirt pile from a sewer or water line dig.

Protection is about the path. Water heater swaps, repipes and leak repairs all mean trips through finished rooms with tools, wet parts and dirty boots. If you are opening a wall to chase a leak, see how to find a hidden water leak first, so the opening is as small as it can be.

BEST DROP CLOTH · SLIP AND LEAK RESISTANT
Trimaco Stay Put Canvas Plus 04321: best drop cloth for plumbers
Trimaco builds Stay Put Canvas Plus in three layers: an absorbent canvas top, a plastic center for leak resistance, and a grippy bottom backing. Trimaco says it is leak-resistant to paints and stains and claims it is 300% more slip-resistant than a traditional 8 oz canvas drop cloth. Item 04321 is 9 x 12 feet. Trimaco also makes 4 x 12 ft (04328) and 6 x 8 ft (04329) sizes. It is not machine washable; spot clean only.
Choose it when you need a path from the door to the bathroom or water heater on hardwood, tile or carpet. Plain canvas lets water from a drained trap or a leaking valve soak through. The plastic middle layer is the reason to buy this one. The 4 x 12 runner fits a hallway.
Skip it if you want a cloth you can throw in the washer after a dirty job. A plain canvas drop cloth washes, but it does not stop water.
BEST PLASTIC SHEETING · 4 MIL
Trimaco 4 mil plastic drop cloth 03504: best plastic sheeting for dust walls
Trimaco sells plastic drop cloths from 0.4 mil to 4 mil. Item 03504 is the 4 mil, 10 x 20 ft sheet. Trimaco says its plastic drops are leak resistant and can serve as dust barrier sheeting with poles. For a dust wall, the heavier sheet is the one that holds up to being pushed past with a water heater dolly.
Choose it when you seal off a bathroom you are opening up, wrap a vanity, or cover a washer and dryer before you cut into a drain stack. The 0.7 to 1 mil sheets are fine for draping furniture for one day.
Skip it as a floor cover. Plastic on hard floors is slick under wet boots; put a grippy drop cloth on the path instead. Thin plastic also tears where a pole or a dolly catches it.
BEST DUST WALL POLES · UP TO 10 FT
ZipWall ZipPole ZipWall 10 (ZP2): best dust barrier poles
ZipWall’s product page describes the ZP2 kit as two spring-loaded stainless steel poles with heads, plates and GripDisk non-slip pads. The Amazon listing calls the poles anodized aluminum; we follow the maker’s page. Each telescopes from 4 ft 2 in to 10 ft 3 in, and ZipWall says the pair holds a dust barrier up to 10 feet high and 10 feet wide. The head locks the plastic to the pole and holds it against the ceiling without tape or ceiling damage. Each pole weighs 1.5 lb. Plastic is not included.
Choose it when you need a dust wall across a hallway or a room opening during a repipe, a shower valve swap, or any job with drywall cutting. Two poles cover a typical doorway or hall; add poles for wider openings.
Skip it for ceilings over about 10 feet. ZipWall sells 12 ft and 20 ft poles for those. For one small cabinet, tape and plastic are enough.
ZIPPER DUST DOOR · ONE PER DOORWAY
ZipWall Heavy-Duty Zipper 2-Pack: zipper dust door
A zipper dust door is a zipper that sticks to the plastic wall. Once it is on, you cut the plastic behind it and you have a door that closes. Follow the package directions for where to place and cut it. ZipWall sells Standard and Heavy-Duty zippers in 2-packs, plus full ZipDoor kits and magnetic door kits, on its doors page. The Amazon link below is the Heavy-Duty 2-pack, part HDAZ2.
Choose it when you or the homeowner need to pass through the dust wall many times a day. A zipper keeps the wall closed between trips, which a taped flap does not.
Skip it if the wall stays shut all job. For a doorway you walk through with tools and parts all day, ZipWall’s magnetic door kits are the step up. Peel the zipper off when the job is done; do not leave it stuck to anything you care about.
Painter’s tape: what to buy
Painter’s tape holds plastic edges to painted walls, trim and floors so dust does not get under the sheet. Buy a clean-removal tape that says on the package how many days it can stay on and still come off clean, and that lists painted walls and trim as surfaces. Wider tape holds a plastic edge better than narrow tape, which lets go as the sheet moves.
Do not use duct tape on finished surfaces. It pulls paint when it comes off. On fresh paint, wallpaper or a textured ceiling, test a short piece in a closet first. On jobs that run more than a day or two, pull tape off at the end of the job, not the end of the month.
Tarps: what to buy
A tarp is the outdoor piece of the kit. Put a heavy poly tarp under the dirt pile when you dig a sewer lateral or a water service, so the lawn is not buried and you can shovel the spoils back in clean. Grommets let you stake it down or tie it over a trench overnight.
Inside, a tarp is a poor floor cover. It is slick on hardwood and tile and does not absorb water. Use the Stay Put drop cloth on the path and save the tarp for the yard, the driveway, or covering a truck load of old pipe. Before any dig, call 811 so buried utilities get marked, and leave sewer and water service work to a licensed plumber where a permit is required.
How to choose and plan the protection
Walk the path first
Before you bring anything in, walk from the truck to the work area. Count doors, measure the hallway width, and note floor types. Hardwood and tile need a grippy, leak-resistant cloth. Carpet needs a cloth that will not slide or let water through.
Size the drop cloths to the path
Runners for halls, full 9 x 12 cloths for the work area. Overlap joints by a foot so a boot does not catch the edge.
Decide if you need a dust wall
Cutting drywall, plaster or tile means dust. Seal the work room with plastic and poles, add a zipper door, and turn off central air or close the return in that room while you cut. A shop vac with a fine filter at the end of each day keeps dust from walking out on boots.
Old houses
In older homes, painted walls may contain lead. ZipWall states its poles help with the EPA RRP rule, which covers paid work that disturbs paint in older homes. If you are hiring out the work, ask whether the contractor is RRP certified.
Plastic sheeting and drop cloth FAQ
What thickness of plastic sheeting should I use for a dust wall?
Use heavier sheeting, such as a 4 mil sheet, for a wall that people walk past or that stays up for days. Thin 0.7 to 1 mil plastic is fine for draping furniture for a short job but tears easily at poles and doorways.
Are canvas drop cloths better than plastic?
For floors, yes. Canvas absorbs drips and does not slide as easily as plastic. A canvas cloth with a plastic layer, such as Trimaco Stay Put Canvas Plus, also stops water from soaking through. Use plastic sheeting for dust walls and covering furniture.
How do zipper dust doors work?
A zipper dust door is an adhesive-backed zipper that you stick to a plastic dust wall. Once it is on, you cut the plastic behind the zipper, and the zipper opens and closes like a door.
Will painter’s tape damage walls?
Clean-removal painter’s tape is made to come off painted walls without pulling paint, within the number of days printed on the package. Test it on fresh paint or wallpaper first, and do not use duct tape on finished surfaces.
Can I use a tarp as a drop cloth?
Not on finished floors. Poly tarps are slick on hardwood and tile and do not absorb water. Use a tarp outside under dirt piles or over a trench, and a slip-resistant drop cloth inside.
How we chose
This is a document-based comparison from a licensed plumber’s point of view. We read the maker’s product pages for the drop cloth, sheeting, poles and zippers named here and kept the specs the makers publish: layers, sizes, mil thickness and pole height. We could not read a primary source for a specific painter’s tape or tarp before this page was written, so those sections say what to look for rather than naming a model.
