Quick answer from a licensed plumber: Buy the M12 if your work is residential service and repipes — it lives in one hand, fits between joists, and covers the sizes that make up almost all house plumbing. Buy the M18 if you press anything above 1¼”, because that is where the M12 simply stops. Milwaukee publish the M18 as “1/2 in. to 4 in. capacity.” The size ceiling is the decision; everything else is secondary.

The decision is pipe size, and almost nothing else
Everything else about these two tools is a preference. The size ceiling is a hard wall, and it is the only spec that can make an expensive tool useless to you.
Milwaukee’s M18 page states a “1/2 in. to 4 in. capacity.” Their M12 page does not publish a range at all — but it lists an “M12™ 1-1/4 in. press jaw (sold separately)” as an option, and that is the largest M12 jaw they name. Treat 1¼” as the practical M12 ceiling.
What that means on real jobs: a house is overwhelmingly ½” and ¾” copper, with 1″ showing up on some mains and larger runs. The M12 covers all of that comfortably. The moment you are asked to press a 1½” or 2″ main, a commercial riser, or a large-diameter mechanical-room line, the M12 cannot do the job at any price and no accessory fixes it.
Why the M12 wins on the work most plumbers actually do
Size and weight are not a luxury on a service call. The M12 is a one-handed tool, and press work is frequently done overhead, in a joist bay, in a crawlspace, or inside a wall cavity — positions where a bigger tool means you cannot get the jaw square on the fitting.
That matters more than it sounds, because a press connection that is not square is the connection that leaks. A tool you can actually position properly in a bad spot produces better joints than a more powerful tool you have to fight. The M12 also keeps you on one battery platform if your drills and drivers are M12 — and the cost of a press tool is dominated by the tool and jaws, not the battery, so platform lock-in is a real but secondary consideration.

- Anything over 1¼”. The only argument that is decisive.
- Mixed-size days. Carrying one tool that does ½” through the large sizes beats carrying two.
- Longer calibration interval. Milwaukee publish “50,000 cycles” for the M18 against “32,000 crimps between service inspections” for the M12. On a tool that goes back for calibration, that is real downtime and real money — and it is a genuine, published difference rather than marketing.
The honest cost against it: the M18 is bigger, heavier, and more awkward exactly where residential press work happens. Plenty of service plumbers own both and reach for the M12 nine times out of ten.
Calibration is a real ownership cost — plan for it
Press tools are not fit-and-forget. They are calibrated tools, and the manufacturer publishes a service interval in cycles for a reason: the press force has to stay within spec or the joints it makes are not the joints the fitting manufacturer warranted.
Two things follow that people miss when comparing sticker prices:
- Budget for calibration as an ongoing cost of owning either tool, and for the tool being away while it happens.
- Ignoring the interval can affect your position on a warranty claim. If a pressed joint fails, “when was the tool last calibrated” is a question that gets asked.
The higher interval is a legitimate reason to prefer the M18 for someone pressing all day, and close to irrelevant for someone pressing a few joints a week.
Do not forget the jaws
The tool is only half the purchase. Jaws are sold separately and they are a significant share of the total — the M18 kit Milwaukee list is specified with “½” – 2″ CTS Jaws,” and larger sizes are additional.
Two buying rules that save money:
- Buy for the sizes you actually press, not the sizes you might one day press. Jaws you never fit are dead money.
- Check jaw and actuator compatibility before assuming a size is covered. Matching the pipe size is not sufficient on its own — the mounting and actuator type has to match the tool too.
