Press fittings look identical across services. The difference is the O-ring inside, and it is the part that decides what the fitting is allowed to carry. Fit the wrong one and the joint may hold water perfectly while being unapproved for the system it is on.

The seal is the specification
Everything else about a press fitting — the copper, the crimp, the jaw profile — is broadly the same across services. The elastomer in the groove is what changes. Manufacturers color-code it precisely because the fittings are otherwise indistinguishable in your hand.
- EPDM — the standard seal on potable water and hydronic heating fittings. This is what you are holding unless the fitting says otherwise.
- HNBR — the seal used on fuel gas systems, chosen for hydrocarbon resistance. Gas fittings are marked and color-coded to be identifiable on sight.
- FKM and other specialist elastomers — used for higher temperatures and for solar, refrigeration and some chemical services.
🔴 The color code is the manufacturer’s, not a universal standard. Two brands can use the same color for different things. Read the fitting’s own marking and its listing, and do not assume across brands.
What actually goes wrong
The failure is rarely immediate. A water-rated EPDM seal put on a gas line does not blow out on the test — it holds, passes, and degrades over months as the elastomer swells and softens in contact with hydrocarbons. That is precisely why it is dangerous: the install looks successful.
⚠️ Gas work is not a place to improvise. Fuel gas piping has its own approvals, its own testing requirements, and in many jurisdictions its own licensing. Use fittings explicitly listed for fuel gas, installed to the manufacturer’s instructions, and have the work inspected.
The same logic runs the other way: a gas-rated fitting is not automatically approved for potable water, because potable systems carry lead-content and drinking-water certifications the gas listing does not address.

Buying for potable water
For domestic water the two things to confirm on the box are that it is lead-free for potable service and that it carries the drinking-water listings your jurisdiction expects.

Handling the seal so it survives the install
A correctly specified O-ring still fails if it is damaged going on. In order of how often it happens:
- A burr on the cut end slices it. Ream every cut, inside and out. This is the single most common cause of a slow weep on an otherwise good joint.
- A scratched or pitted sealing surface where the O-ring lands. Old solder, deep scoring or corrosion will leak no matter how well the fitting is pressed.
- Grit on the tube, dragged under the seal as the fitting slides on. Wipe the tube.
- A missing O-ring. It happens — fittings get handled, and a seal can come out in a tool bag. Look into the cup before you fit it.
🔴 Never substitute a generic O-ring into a press fitting. The groove dimensions and the elastomer are part of the listed assembly, and a hardware-store ring is not the same product even if it fits the groove.
Temperature and pressure still apply
Each system carries its own rated temperature and pressure limits, and those come from the seal as much as the copper. Hydronic heating, solar loops and anything running hot need a fitting listed for that duty rather than a standard water fitting used optimistically. Check the manufacturer’s published limits for the exact fitting.

Can you use water press fittings on a gas line?
No. Fuel gas systems need fittings listed for gas, with a seal chosen for hydrocarbon resistance. A water-rated seal can pass the initial test and then degrade in service, which is exactly what makes the substitution dangerous.
What do the O-ring colors on press fittings mean?
They identify the seal material and therefore the approved service — but the coding is set by each manufacturer, not by a universal standard. Read the fitting’s marking and listing rather than assuming a color means the same thing across brands.
Can I replace the O-ring in a press fitting?
