Both are Viega. Both press. Both come in ½” to 4″. They look similar enough in the bin that people assume one is just a bigger version of the other, and then order the wrong box for a gas line.
Short answer: ProPress is for copper and stainless tube. MegaPress is for steel pipe. That is the whole decision, and it is decided by the pipe already in the building — not by preference, price, or which jaws you happen to own.
The dividing line is the pipe, not the fitting
Viega describes ProPress as its system for copper and stainless steel pipe, and MegaPress as its system for carbon and stainless steel pipe. In practice that maps onto the two sizing standards you already work with:
- ProPress → CTS (Copper Tube Size). The copper running potable water and hydronic heating in a house.
- MegaPress → IPS (Iron Pipe Size). Carbon steel — what most people on a job site call black iron.
A ½” steel pipe and a ½” copper tube are not the same outside diameter, which is why the fittings are not interchangeable and never will be. What each one is actually approved for
This is where the decision gets made, and it is not symmetric.
ProPress is the potable water system. Viega states its 316 ProPress Stainless line is approved for more than 800 different applications including potable water, and the copper line carries more than 400 fitting configurations. Connections can be made wet or dry in seven seconds or less.
MegaPress is not a potable water system. Viega lists MegaPress for gas and fuel oil, hydronic heating and cooling, and industrial and technical gas applications including compressed air. The EPDM line specifically is approved for more than 13 applications including non-potable water, hydronic heating, fire sprinklers and residential low-pressure steam.
The headline capability is gas. Viega calls MegaPress the first fitting approved for connecting gas pipe up to 4″, and the MegaPressG line uses an HNBR sealing element approved for gas and fuel oil, with approval for underground use in accordance with code and the local AHJ.
So: if the answer involves drinking water, you are in ProPress. If it involves fuel gas, you are in MegaPressG. There is no overlap to be clever about.

The sealing element decides the application, and the dot tells you which you are holding
Both systems use the same color-coded logic, and it is worth committing to memory because an EPDM fitting on a gas line is a failed inspection at best:
- EPDM — water and hydronic heating. On MegaPress the dots are green, and the dot also indicates Smart Connect, Viega’s feature for identifying an unpressed connection during pressure testing.
- HNBR — fuel gas and fuel oil. This is MegaPressG. Viega marks these yellow.
- FKM — higher temperatures and chemical resistance. MegaPress FKM is approved for residential and low-pressure steam, compressed air and many fuel and oil applications.
Never substitute one for another because the body fits. The body fitting is not the approval.
Pipe schedule: the spec people forget to check
Copper is copper, but steel pipe comes in wall thicknesses, and the MegaPress lines do not all cover the same range. Viega lists standard MegaPress for Schedule 10 through Schedule 40, while MegaPressG, MegaPress FKM and MegaPress Stainless are listed for Schedule 5 through Schedule 40. MegaPress EPDM is made of carbon steel with a zinc-nickel coating for use on Schedule 5 to 40 carbon steel pipe.
One more sizing trap: while other MegaPress fittings run up to 4″, Viega lists MegaPress EPDM only in ½”, ¾”, 1″, 1¼”, 1½” and 2″. Check the line, not just the family.
Will my press tool do both?
The tool is usually not the constraint — the jaws are. The press tool supplies force; the jaw or ring is what matches a specific fitting profile at a specific diameter. Because IPS steel and CTS copper are different diameters, a jaw set bought for one system does not cover the other, and larger sizes generally move from plain jaws to a ring-and-actuator arrangement. The same rule bites hardest on refrigeration work, where high-pressure HVACR press systems use fittings and jaws that are not interchangeable with standard press-connect.
Two practical consequences:
- Budget for jaws as a second purchase, not an accessory. Adding MegaPress capability to a tool you already own is a jaw purchase, and jaws are not cheap.
- Confirm compatibility against your specific tool before assuming a size is covered. Matching the pipe size is not sufficient on its own — the mounting and actuator type has to match too. As a rough orientation: the compact tools are aimed at residential copper, and steel pipe in the larger MegaPress sizes is where the full-size tool earns its bulk.
When you need both worlds to meet
Retrofits are where this comes up — a galvanized or black steel system that has to tie into copper or PEX. Viega makes a MegaPress transition coupling for exactly this, in ½” to 2″, in two versions: IPS-to-CTS for going from a steel system to CTS systems including PEX, and IPS-to-IPS for joining carbon steel to stainless or galvanized to stainless. Viega notes it can be pressed in seconds with the same tool.
That is a genuinely useful part to know exists, because the alternative is threading an adapter onto pipe you were trying to avoid threading in the first place.
So which should you buy?
You do not really choose. The building chooses:
- Copper potable water, residential hydronic → ProPress.
- Black iron gas line → MegaPressG, HNBR, yellow.
- Steel hydronic, fire sprinkler, non-potable water → MegaPress EPDM, green.
- Low-pressure steam, compressed air → MegaPress FKM.
- Steel meeting copper or PEX → MegaPress transition coupling.
