The letters do not describe a different metal, a different diameter or a different fitting. They describe how much copper is in the wall. Everything worth knowing about the choice follows from that one fact.
What Is Type K Copper Pipe?
Type K is the heaviest-wall class of ASTM B88 copper water tube. At 1/2-inch nominal size the wall measures 0.049 inch; at 3/4-inch it is 0.065 inch, per the Copper Development Association’s Copper Tube Handbook Table 14.2a. Its print line is green. CDA’s Table 14.1 lists it for domestic water service and distribution, fire protection, fuel and fuel oil, natural and LP gas, HVAC, snow melting, compressed air and vacuum.
What Is Type L Copper Pipe?
Type L is the medium-wall class of the same standard, printed blue. Its wall is 0.040 inch at 1/2-inch and 0.045 inch at 3/4-inch (Table 14.2b). Table 14.1 gives it the same application list as Type K. Medical gas is a separate product line rather than an extra use for either — CDA’s recommendation is Medical Gas tube to ASTM B819 in Types K or L, cleaned for oxygen service per NFPA 99. Inside a house, Type L is what most plumbers reach for by default.
Type K vs Type L: Does the Thicker Wall Buy You Anything?
Not on pressure, which is what people assume. Georgia’s adopted plumbing code (IPC 2018, Section 605.3) requires water service pipe installed underground and outside the structure to have a working pressure rating of not less than 160 psi at 73.4°F. CDA’s Table 14.3b rates annealed 3/4-inch Type L at 582 psi at 100°F, and Table 14.3a rates annealed 3/4-inch Type K at 852 psi on the same basis. Both clear the requirement several times over.
What the extra wall buys is sacrificial metal and mechanical margin. A buried service line lives in rock, backfill and soil movement, and it is the one pipe you cannot reach without a machine. That is the whole case for Type K — a durability argument, not a performance one.
Wall Thickness, Bore and Weight
These are CDA’s published dimensions for the three sizes a house actually uses, from Tables 14.2a and 14.2b:

Outside diameter is one column because it is one number — at a given size, both types are the same tube on the outside. Here is what the thicker wall costs you:

Two things fall out of those numbers that almost nobody mentions. The thicker wall eats the bore. Because the outside diameter is fixed, every extra thousandth of wall comes out of the inside: at 3/4-inch, Type K’s bore area is about 10 percent smaller than Type L’s. And it is a lot more metal. Arithmetic on CDA’s own weights puts 3/4-inch Type K about 41 percent heavier per foot than Type L, which is what you are paying for and carrying.
Green vs Blue: Reading the Print Line
Table 14.1 gives the color code as green for Type K, blue for Type L, red for Type M and yellow for DWV. The Copper Tube Handbook adds a detail worth knowing: the color print is on hard tube, while every type must also be permanently incised with its tube type, maker and country of origin. Hard Straight Lengths vs Soft Coils
“Temper” is the other half of the buying decision. The handbook calls drawn temper “hard” and annealed temper “soft”. Hard tube is joined by soldering, brazing or capillary fittings; soft tube takes those plus flare and compression fittings. Table 14.1 shows both Type K and Type L in 20-foot drawn straight lengths and in annealed coils of 60 ft and 100 ft from 1/4 inch through 1 inch.
That coil is the real reason the underground conversation happens at all: it lets you run meter to house in one piece, and a joint you never made is a joint that never leaks.
Where Each One Actually Goes
The habit in the trade is Type K soft for the buried water service and Type L for distribution inside the building. Worth knowing: CDA’s own minimum recommendations are lighter than that habit. Under Underground Water Services the handbook says to “Use Type M hard for straight lengths joined with fittings, and Type L soft where coils are more convenient,” and under Water Distribution Systems it says “Use Type M for above and below ground.”
CDA is explicit that these are minimums, that plumbing and mechanical codes govern what may be used, and that the choice is the designer’s. On real jobs the reason to put Type K in a trench is not the code and not the pressure rating — it is that you get exactly one attempt at a pipe running under a driveway. What the Code Actually Says
Both of Georgia’s material tables — Table 605.3 for water service and Table 605.4 for water distribution — list a single copper line: “Copper or copper-alloy tubing (Type K, WK, L, WL, M or WM)” against ASTM B75, B88, B251 and B447. All three types are listed for both jobs. The code does not pick Type K for you; it sets the 160 psi underground rating and leaves the rest open. Ask your water authority what it accepts before you dig.
Joining: Same Fittings, One Catch
Because the outside diameter is identical, a fitting cannot tell the two apart. The same solder fittings, the same press fittings, the same cutter and the same reamer work on Type K and Type L, and you can couple a length of one to a length of the other. The catch is worth knowing before you braze. CDA states that when welding or brazing is used, “the annealed ratings must be used, since the heating involved in these joining processes will anneal (soften) the hard tube.” Brazing a hard Type L line drops it to the soft column of the pressure table — still far above 160 psi, but it is not the number on the spec sheet.

Is Type K copper pipe better than Type L? It is thicker, not better. Type K carries more sacrificial metal and a higher pressure rating, which earns its keep on a buried service line. Above ground it costs more, weighs about 41 percent more per foot at 3/4 inch, and gives you a slightly smaller bore for no practical gain.
Can you connect Type K to Type L copper pipe? Yes. Every ASTM B88 type shares the same outside diameter at a given nominal size, so an ordinary coupling joins them and every fitting, cutter and reamer works on both. The wall thickness changes only what is inside the tube, and fittings grab the outside.
Does code require Type K for an underground water service? Not in Georgia’s adopted plumbing code. Table 605.3 lists copper tubing Types K, WK, L, WL, M and WM for water service pipe, so the code permits all of them. Section 605.3 sets a minimum 160 psi working pressure rating underground. Your local water authority may be stricter, so ask.
How do you tell Type K from Type L? Hard tube carries a printed color line: green is Type K, blue is Type L. Every type is also permanently incised with the tube type, the manufacturer’s name or trademark and the country of origin, so a soft coil with no printed stripe can still be read off the stamping.
