Compression Ferrule Sizing: Match the Tube, Not the Pipe

You went to the store for a ferrule for your half-inch copper line, came back with one marked 1/2, and it will not go on the pipe. Nothing is wrong with the part. The number on the bag is not describing your pipe.

Quick answer: a compression fitting is sized by the outside diameter of the tube it clamps, not by the nominal size of the pipe. Copper’s nominal size runs 1/8″ smaller than its outside diameter, so a “1/2-inch” copper line is 5/8″ on the outside and takes a 5/8″ ferrule. Ferrule and olive are the same part under two names. They are single-use, and the nut, ferrule and valve body are a matched set — buy them together.

Ferrule, olive, sleeve — one part, three words

The little ring that does the sealing gets called a ferrule on most American packaging, an olive in British and a lot of trade usage, and a compression sleeve or compression ring on the rest. They are the same component doing the same job, and searching one word will hide half the results from you.

What it does is simple and worth understanding, because the sizing confusion falls straight out of it. The ferrule sits loose on the tube. When you tighten the nut, the nut drives the ferrule into a tapered seat inside the fitting body, and the taper squeezes the ferrule down until it bites into the tube wall and forms a metal-to-metal seal. It seals on the outside of your tube. That is why its size has to be the outside dimension of your tube, and nothing else.

The number on the bag is the tube OD — this is the whole problem

Nominal pipe size is a naming convention, not a measurement. Copper tube’s nominal size is 1/8 of an inch smaller than its actual outside diameter, and that offset is fixed — the outside diameter does not change between Type K, L and M, which is why the same fittings work on all three (I go into that in Type L vs Type M copper pipe).

So the translation you actually need:

There is one large exception and it catches people going the other way. Small-diameter tube — icemaker lines, some faucet risers, refrigeration tube — is usually sold and labeled by its actual OD already. A “1/4-inch” icemaker line really is 1/4″ on the outside and takes a 1/4″ ferrule. So the same word means two different things depending on what you are holding.

The way out of that is to stop reading labels and measure. Put a caliper or a tape across the outside of the bare tube and buy that number. Thirty seconds, and it is the only method that works on both kinds of tube.

Why the store shelf will still argue with you

Measuring settles what you need. It does not settle what the label says, because the trade names ferrules and the things that hold them by two different systems.

Ferrules and sleeves are normally sold by the tube they clamp, and the good listings say so outright — a LASCO nut-and-sleeve set is described as “1/2-Inch OD compression”, meaning half-inch outside diameter tube. Tools and valves are usually named for the nominal pipe they serve instead. A WORKPRO compression sleeve puller is sold as a “1/2-Inch” puller and its own listing explains it is “compatible with standard 1/2″ copper compression sleeves” — that is the half-inch pipe in your wall, which measures 5/8″ on the outside.

So a half-inch copper stub genuinely has a “1/2-inch” puller and a “1/2-inch” angle stop on it, while the ferrule itself is a 5/8″ part. Both labels are correct; they are answering different questions. When a listing states “OD”, trust that number. When it just says a size, assume it means the pipe and check the fitment line before you buy.

Ferrules are single-use. All of them.

A ferrule seals by being permanently deformed — it is crushed into the taper and bitten into the tube. Once that has happened it has taken the shape of one specific joint at one specific depth.

So when you take a stop valve off, the old ferrule does not come with it and it does not go back on. Cut it off, or pull it, and fit a new one. Re-tightening a used ferrule is the single most common cause of the slow weep that shows up two days later under a cabinet — the kind that ruins the base of a vanity before anyone notices it.

Getting a stuck one off without wrecking the tube is its own small skill; a puller is the clean way, and there are field tricks when you have no room for one. Brass or plastic, and when each belongs

Most ferrules you will meet are brass, and on copper tube that is what you want. Brass is harder than the copper it bites into, which is exactly the relationship the seal depends on.

Plastic or nylon ferrules exist for a reason: soft plastic supply tube, poly icemaker line and some appliance connections would be cut through by a brass ring. On those, the softer ferrule deforms instead of the tube.

The failure is using one where the other belongs. A plastic ferrule on copper will not bite hard enough and tends to relax over months into a weeping joint. A brass ferrule crushed onto thin poly tube can score straight through it. Match the ferrule material to the tube material, not to whatever came in the drawer.

Nut, ferrule and body are a set — do not mix brands

This is the one that surprises people who assume a size is a size.

The seal is made by a ferrule being driven into a taper. The angle of that taper, the depth of the seat and the reach of the nut are design choices the manufacturer makes together. Two “5/8-inch” compression sets from different makers can have slightly different taper geometry, and a ferrule that meets its seat at the wrong angle contacts on a line instead of a band. It will usually still hold pressure on the day you install it. It is much more likely to weep later.

The practical rule: use the nut and ferrule that came with the valve. If you are replacing just the ferrule, replace the nut with it, from the same maker. They cost almost nothing and it removes an entire category of callback.

The valves these actually go on

Nearly every compression ferrule in a house is doing one job: holding an angle stop onto a copper stub coming out of the wall. If you are replacing the stop anyway, buy the valve as a kit with its nut and ferrule rather than sourcing a loose ring.

The two tools that make a compression joint behave

A ferrule seals on a round, clean, square-cut tube. Most compression leaks I get called to were decided before the nut was ever tightened.

Fitting one so it does not weep

  1. Cut square and deburr the outside. A cutter wheel rolls a small lip outward; that lip is directly under the ferrule.
  2. Nut first, then ferrule. Both go on the tube before the valve does, and the nut’s threads face the valve. Fitting them backwards is a trip back under the sink.
  3. Seat the valve fully against the tube before you tighten anything.
  4. Snug by hand, then about a turn with a wrench. Two wrenches if the stub can rotate — one holding, one turning.
  5. Stop. Over-tightening does not fix a weep; it deforms the ferrule past the point where it can seal and guarantees you are cutting it off. If it drips, take it apart and fit a fresh ferrule rather than cranking harder.

Plastic or nylon belongs on soft plastic and poly tube, where a brass ring would cut through. Matching the ferrule material to the tube material is the rule; using whatever is in the drawer is how you get a joint that relaxes over a few months.
